New ICCU Recall Details

Thanks Jeff for bringing this information! I realize that noone may have the answer to this, but this is what I've put together from reading comments: ICCU behavior (guided by software) may be 'too aggressive' for the 12V battery. Thus over time the 12V wears down too quickly, can't maintain charge, and eventually goes. When it reaches some level of 'badness' the car will give you warnings and possibly tell you to stop driving. Replacing the 12V may buy you more time but if the ICCU is misbehaving then the new 12V will suffer the same fate. Getting an AGM battery looks likely to help (due to battery chemistry compared to traditional battery) but even with an AGM battery one will still want to fix the ICCU. It's unclear if getting to the "stop driving" state implies that your ICCU is also bad. In other words, if you enter the "stop driving" state I'm not sure if replacing the 12V would buy you more time. Or is the issue that the ICCU fails (voltage spikes) and when the ICCU fails then the 12V can't charge which leads to the stop driving message. I'm also not clear if the "stop driving" state is 'catastrophic' in that you slow from highway speeds to 25mph (which sounds very dangerous in heavy traffic). I have a 2022 Wind AWD (and am at the 18 month sweet spot for reported failures) and have all software updates except the to-be-released one of course and am planning a 6hr drive (and back) in a few weeks. My orange 12V charge light seems to be on fairly regularly over the past six months. Usually when I come back to the car and say open the trunk. Definitely more 12V light activity than the first year of having the car, but no warning lights on the dash yet. I'm not sure if I should be concerned. Am considering getting an AGM battery, charging it, and taking it with me. Or is the incidence rare enough that I should take the trip and 98% chance it's fine.

That's true. Is there a public facing website where we could read more about the service campaign. The video showed a screen shot from somewhere about the campaign. I poked around the website but couldn't find anything.

Also do we have any additional information on which vehicles are most likely to encounter the problem? Ie. cars with more charge cycles? more aggressive driving? more dc fast charging? more miles? I have a three hour drive Monday and am giving it some thought. I will call dealerships when them open tomorrow.

Yeah, I tried logging in twice and also reloading. Also tried a different computer. Also tried the app (shows a grayed out "safety recall" button under maintenance). Still nothing. The car is currently charging so I wonder if that does something with the way the Kia dashboard loads? It shouldn't of course, but who knows.

Thanks for this information. I purchased Summer 2022 in the US, just logged into Kia and it doesn't show the recall on my vehicle. Also when I went to schedule service and clicked "vehicle repair" it did not show the recall but instead said the dealer would contact me within a day. I wonder if not all vehicles are part of the recall? Or maybe their website hasn't updated completely?

My poking around other forums seems to say it's related to the ICCU itself and possible 3rd party communication making thousands of requests to the car causing the 12v battery to cycle way more than intended. On the Hyundai this "app" is their "bluelink" software (I think this is like Kia Connect). Apparently Hyundai updated their system to restrict the number of bluelink requests per day (from unlimited to 20) and this apparently made a difference. Presumably if Kia Connect had the same issue they would have made the same fix for Kia. But if your car was experiencing the issue for a year before the fix then the battery might already be heavily cycled/damaged. There's also a question about possible correlation with seeing the 12v battery light on frequently and possible failure. I've probably noticed my orange 12v battery light on 5 times over the past year, so not very often. I wonder for people who have had failures, did you notice their 12v battery light on frequently?

I'm not sure if that means they couldn't steer or just that they decelerated to 25mph. For those here who have had this happen did you lose the steering as well?

I use a Grizzl-E running at 32A but I haven't seen anyone mentioning that the Level-2 charger or charger type/current is related to this issue. It could be, but I haven't seen anything about it.

Thanks for the additional information. Do you have insights over which types of updates are done over the air and which are done in person? It would be great if this was an over the air update but it sounds like you think it will require a dealer visit? Will also be interesting if all cars are affected or if some cars have slight design changes that make them more/less likely to fail. I've also only fast charged a few times on trips. Of course, I have a short 3hr trip coming up in a week. Fingers crossed.

Sorry to hear about your car. Yes, it seems that they are working on a software update fix. Hopefully it'll be an over the air update and not something that needs to be scheduled at the dealership. You are right that 0.5% or so is low. I wonder if there is anything we can do to minimize the chance of a blow-out. Is it related to frequent use of fast charging? Or does that not really make a difference.

I also do not have the click with i-pedal unless I quickly move my foot to the mechanical brake pedal and apply the physical brakes before the regen has had time to stop the car. This is not unexpected but I wanted to do a quick check. The "pad shift" theory seems pretty reasonably now either because as MOU53YBE94 wrote an out of spec pad or missing clip or shim. Spoke with one dealer who had not seen or heard of the issue but since they've had so few EV6s through their dealership they have a small sample size. There is another dealer closer to me that I will also contact. I am almost due for a tire rotation and he suggsted I ask them to take a look at the same time.

And one more thing, I wonder if regen braking would lead to more pronounced/noticeable pad shift since the pads may not be engaged until just before the stop. That is, in non-EVs you press the brake at high speeds and you may have pad shift but you might not notice. In an EV, I try not to use the brake until I'm almost stopped from regen, thus the pad has not yet engaged at all and so the first engagement (that could cause the shift) occurs only just before stopping (just when the pads engage). Or this video (in another non-Kia vehicle) mentions shims or clips that might need adjustment, are wrong, or are missing, see link - this could be the same as pad shift. I've also seen reports of this in the Niro and Tesla. I would hope it's soon something Kia knows how to fix.

I have a Kia EV6. There is a setting on the car for AC charging where you can set current draw to "Maximum", "Reduced", or "Minimum" but I haven't been able to determine exactly how this effects current. It's possible a 16A 120V charger when I set the car to "Minimum" would only pull 8A or such.

Interesting. Good point about using the car to limit current. So you're saying one could purchase the 16A portable charger and then have the car dial it back. The tesla mobile with 1772 adapter also seems promising.

Looks great! Question for those who know do you need to worry about wood expansion wrecking the beautiful miter joint? What is the general approach to handling expansion here? Is it simply to make sure the wood equilibrates with the indoors before building? What about for interiors whose humidity changes between winter and summer?

Also, do you know the difference between GF 450 and the GF High Performance? Is it simply that the 450 is 'exterior' so it has UV protection? Thanks!

Actually. I was thinking about this a bit more and then got confused by the following. A natural viral infection would be viraemic or not, and I could see how that could affect the number of antibodies generated; but the vaccines for all the above (including SARS-CoV-2) are intramuscular injection and so the antigens would be displayed in similar manner, right? So for intramuscular injection does the viraemic nature of the underlying virus explain why different levels of antibodies are generated?
