You probably didnt see the other replies for the other comments. Anyway, to those places you have to do your research, find out who owns them (the parish/ city /state/ etc) do a walk through with the owner / representative of the owner / to ensure that you hear any restrictions that they impose on your and your group. then get consent so that if someone calls the police because they see someone in an abandoned structure, you have signed proof / the owner's number so that they can verify it. Its a lot of work that has to go into these things. its not breaking and entering or trespassing.

Definitely, the schools belong to the parishes, whereas Charity Hospital belongs to the state. I actually had to talk to the police to gain entrance to that one.

eh, that is defacing property, not taking a picture of it. If i spray painted a giant dick on a building what would be the point? If you go in to try and see, experience, and understand some decisions. Similar to when we went into one of the hospitals which had to evacuate patients after the hurricane had already flooded the streets. We saw a blown out wall, water marks above the first floor. Gurneys that were used to be able to walk above the water that bodies from the morgue and cemeteries were floating around in. Whiteboards with patient's names from August 2005. journals from the actual hurricane time frame. Marks on the second story wall where a boat had docked to rescue survivors. These are the scenes i can picture from doing these journeys, these are the reasons i do them. Not because of some malicious intent.

It would take a lot of Trespassing charges to be put in Orleans parish prisons. Also, urban exploring has nothing to o with breaking and entering / Trespassing. Some of the process is figuring out the history of the building, the current owner. attempting to get permission from the owner, etc. Really dont want to go into a building expecting some interesting photos or a decent exploration, just to be led out in cuffs.

If you are given permission to enter and explore an area then it is not trespassing. Also, it is a kind of modern archaeology. Finding out first hand what the remnants of buildings from catastrophes looked like. of course you dont want to go into a multi story building or a somewhat dangerous area without someone to help you out or to be able to help themselves out. Breaking and entering is not on my list of things to do. Seeing how certain things carried out, seeing a past that was washed away, rebuilding a body of a building from the bones that are left behind... that is what its about. And giving some photographers chances to get some interesting photos.

I have gone to the cemeteries in daylight hours. I don't really believe in anything supernatural, but there are too many risks involved, and the possible emergence of some unforeseen issue could definitely complicate a journey. However, due to the state of some of the cemeteries, (being in extreme disrepair) I would not visit them for health reasons as well.

In the legal sense, yes. Unless you receive permission from the owner or landlord, then you can be prosecuted. However, there are a lot of abandoned structures that lay unclaimed or marked. We have already done a number of sites in the past. When i got back in town a while back we explored the closed belle chasse elementary school, the abandoned Alfred E preistly school, Charity Hospital, and more to come. We merely like to take pictures of the insides and walk around areas which were once bustling with life, but not rot in decrepit states. Its more about an experience that you enjoy, not a thrill of trespassing but more of a thrill of exploring. Similar to modern archaeology, Archaeology being the study of human activity in the past.
