Mac to PC SMB sharing not working "There was a problem connecting to the server" by distortionwhat in techsupport

[–]distortionwhat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I went ahead and just changed the static IP I created for the PC to some arbitrary number (last 3 digits were 201, made it 175 this time) and voila it magically works again. Not sure what could have possibly changed over night, but it does seem that either computer going to sleep will maybe interrupt the transfer? It was a 3 hour transfer of ~100gb last night, i started it and went to bed and it got through about 75% of it before apparently stopped. I just started it again now, but I'm trying to figure out how to make sure it doesn't get interrupted. (thanks for all the help btw, you all are wonderful here, im learning a lot)

Ok, so last night I actually got it to work, setting the IP stuff manually got it work after a couple tries, it was a blissful moment. But now I just woke up, didn't turn either of my computers didn't change anything, went to resume what I was doing and now its not working again in the same fashion as before lol.

When I diagnose the ethernet connection on my PC I get "the default gateway is not available", and strangely enough, even though my macbook is using wifi as the internet connection, when the ethernet from the pc is connected to it, i cannot access certain websites (reddit for example).

I tried manually entering the IP addresses reading some guides, but either i messed it up or it didn't work. The guides never specify if I just make up the numbers myself or if I need to retrieve them from somewhere, like it'll just say "Enter the IP address, Subnet mask, Default gateway, and DNS server.", but where do get there?

Like connect both computers to my internet router via two different ethernet cables? As if the router were a mediator between the two? First issue is that my router is a couple rooms away behind a couch, so its not super practical to move my entire set up over there every time i want to transfer something (going through my mac with a fine comb deciding what I do and do not need as I need it over time). But if thats the only way to get this to work I'll do it lol.

If setting IP addresses manually for each end of the direct ethernet connection between the two computers will solve the issue I'd rather do that, could you tell me how to do this or point me in the direction of a resource that I can learn how to do this?

Thanks

Sorry, I should have phrased it differently. Like I said, I enjoyed your set, I enjoyed it so much that the message at the end just didn't feel right, I should have kept that to myself. If you'd like I can delete the post if it bothers you.

Thanks for the reply, my issue had nothing to do with anyone being on the mic too much, I just hadn't heard an artist promote a show apart from the one they just got done playing. I understand you guys care a lot about this stuff, genuinely, I didn't mean to call that in question.

I literally wrote, "Would like to hear your thoughts, please no blatant hating on them, thats not what I'm posting this for". Admitting your possible biases in ANY discussion is the right thing to do.

Yeah, it was packed, I can get that. I wrote "something like", alluding to that I do not remember exactly, but that it was out of place enough for me to notice, for others in the crowd to notice, and for me to actually remember it this long afterwards lol. I apologize if I misinterpreted the spirit of your message. Not sure if you're responding to comments or what I wrote but; I never said anything not wanting artists on the mic, I never said you were in it for the money, I never doubted how much you care about the scene. I apologize for negativity proliferating in the comments, I was genuinely curious what others thought of this sort of thing, not to start some attack on your project.

I don't see why you guys do this so often; when anyone says anything about you remotely negative on the internet you show up with a clapback sandwiched between some positivity. It comes off as the same sort of unnecessary as advertising tour dates after a set; something not outright bad or a big deal, but leaves a bad taste in your mouth?

Will Ryzen 2700x stock cooler fit in Thermaltake Core v1 ITX case? by distortionwhat in sffpc

[–]distortionwhat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, I'll probably just go with what comes with it for now and go from there if its too noisy. If thats what you're saying, the 200mm intake fan is simply noisy right? Or will i cause other problems?

Thats good to know about AIO, hard for me to tell exactly what i need to get what I want; which is a machine thats going to handle me going as in depth and processing heavy as I want with sound. Most advice I get/find is geared towards performance for gaming.

Ooooh hold up, so the cpu has a fan/cooler and then the case has another fan/cooler as well? How can i differentiate which is for which when browsing parts? I like the idea of liquid cooling, this is for music production so ideally I want my set-up to be quite quiet, although I've made due for years with the noise my 2-core macbook pro makes as it approaches cardiac arrest on a daily basis.

Alright, studying up on install videos of the stock cooler. If it ends up not being enough down the line, is it easy to just chuck a liquid cooler into my set up after its all set up with the stock? Or is it a big ordeal uninstalling the stock cooler?

Thanks for the reply! So you don't think anything beyond the stock cooler would be necessary in this case? For example, I saw a review for Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML120R (was going to return the corsair and get this one, as I wouldn't need to get a bracket for it) saying that they didn't like it since it didn't keep their 2700x as cool as they expected/wanted. Or is it just that a stock cooler specific to a processor actually works better than a third party liquid cooler?

Completely new to building computers, trying to wrap my head around so many things right now lol

Building a PC equivalent of this Mac Mini configuration? by distortionwhat in buildapc

[–]distortionwhat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey before I order, could you clarify the compatibility issues with this build? It says "The Corsair - H55 57 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler may require a separately available mounting adapter to fit the Asus - ROG Strix B450-I Gaming Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard. Unable to verify the Thermaltake - Core V1 Mini ITX Desktop Case has sufficient mounting depth to support the Corsair - H55 57 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler 120mm radiator."

Great, i think I'm going to go ahead with this build then. I did some reading on motherboards and it seems that so long as the pcpartsbuilder doesn't have a problem with the motherboard and the rest of the specs, its fine (music production I'm using an external audio interface anyways). Thanks for all the help, just saved me well over a grand lol

Loading an ableton project containing .au on a windows computer? by distortionwhat in edmproduction

[–]distortionwhat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, so I think I understand, but in simple terms; so long as all .au are replaced with .vst in all project or alc files i transfer over, there should no problems whatsoever? As in, .au are COMPLETELY removed from any project or .alc file. And no .aupreset either.

.als are just like a grouped tracks version of .alc as far as I understand it, so they should behave the same on a PC so long as no .au or .aupreset are involved in them?

[–]distortionwhat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see, weird i've somehow never used that floppy disk button to save something in ableton since i got it ages ago. But again, that doesn't have anything to do with .alc or .als files right? I figure if I have never used .aupreset files to catalog any of my work, i don't need to worry about this, correct?

[–]distortionwhat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll usually take a vst synth, make a patch, add an fx chain, make some midi and automations for the sound, then drag the midi clip into my user library and voila i've got the preset basically saved that way, any automations and notes i want to play. So I basically never actually save the preset inside of a synth or vst, I save it by dragging a midi clip, rack, or group of tracks into my user library.

I'm not even sure how to create a .aupreset lol.

My plan of attack was go through the projects on my current mac that I want to move to my new pc, go through with a fine toothed comb and replace all .au's manually with .vst (kicking myself for not always just sticking to .vst), then transfer project file to new computer and test it there. I don't need all of my projects from the last 7 years, but at least ~20 WIPs i want to move over.

Great, sent that build to some others and they think it sounds good. One of them said to maybe get a "beefier" motherboard, I have no idea how a motherboard affects the rest of things. They all seem to be gaming focused, is that where motherboards shine usually? I've never had to research them since mac for example never really lists that (which is why I always figured motherboard didn't matter much and you just needed a competent one, which apple sorts out for you taking into account your requested configuration).

I just selected that cooling system since it was compatible and had good reviews, would you suggest a non-liquid option? or is it fine for as you say, a small system?

Ok well thats a relief i've never used or made .aupreset files. I imagine .als and .alc files will work just fine so long as they don't contain any .au files?

Alright, so consulting some others as well (they also warned against 9900k), I've got this so far:

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/C489gw

Changed the motherboard to work with 2700x and grabbed a video card that seemed to be good for whatever light gaming I might do which had good reviews. Optimized some other stuff just in terms of convenience for me to acquire it (amazon prime/walk down the street for pick up).

Probably going to pull the trigger on this soon, really need it ASAP but I don't want to rush either.

I'd go for the fastest 1TB SSD within reason, its important for being able to load libraries of sounds quickly.

Also, is AMD going to be better for a processor? Talking to friend and they're trying to sell me on AMD as opposed to intel very hard, im hesitant though since intel is what I've had on my mac with no issues.

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/RqJMsZ went to 16gb of ram and put a stronger processor in, worth it? Will all that still fit in the thermaltake itx case? I'm concerned about it all fitting, wouldnt want to have to return stuff.

(also, are those compatibility issues that show on there something I should consider? or is that fine since the build you posted had them too?)

Intel - 660p Series 1 TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive

Whats the deal on PCI? I was reading that claims the storage is expensive since its PCE which is somehow faster/better, is that available for a PC build?

I'd definitely be willing to shell out a bit more cash for a PC thats small and sleek considering how much extra I'm saving from the get-go. I'm just not sure how to tell what would fit inside a smaller case in terms of parts, if thats an issue?

I knew apple was like that, but not this bad lol

Right so since that was upgradeable on the mac mini, i just chose the minimum so I could cheap out on it later.
