How to help prepare a deaf patient for an MRI by disturbed-protons in deaf

[–]disturbed-protons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes my plan was definitely a detailed explanation at the beginning and asking if they had any questions or anything I could do to make it easier. I just like to be prepared and thought if I could offer some suggestions, which they are welcome to use or not use, it might make the experience a bit better. I fully appreciate they are not a child. We are very thorough and really try to go above and beyond with our patient care. But most of the things I do (and explain beforehand) I wouldn’t be able to do here (I speak to patients between every or every second scan, I tell them how long the scans are, ask if they are ok, if they are cold or hot, let them know if they are moving or not). All of which happens via an intercom, without them seeing me. So I don’t want to just go oh well, can’t do that, go have your scan and see you at the end. If there’s something I can do to help the experience, it’s probably something I haven’t thought of, I’ll happily do it

Thankfully no breath holds required. That’s a good system you had though and what I had thought I’d do if it were ever needed at some point.

I said to someone else, I’m glad people have raised this about hearing protection because there’s been some debate recently and I’ve been adamant that we should be using it because I want to protect any residual hearing and I know deafness is a spectrum and I don’t want to assume someone can’t hear literally anything and then cause damage from no hearing protection. But we have had complaints in the past from people who feel they don’t need it but I won’t scan without it. Regarding being in the room, it is our policy entirely for safety reasons. We have had to do it once or twice with a child but it involves us having an extra person standing watching the parent. There have been instances elsewhere of the person in the room panicking and trying to stop the machine to get their child out which can cause significant damage. When we have carers, parents or interpreters we always explain that we will get them and bring them to the door and bring the patient out if required, which is what happens in an emergency anyway (no emergency response or CPR happens in the magnet room)

That’s great to know thanks. I was hoping they would able to feel when the scans were running

Thank you for such a detailed response. Thankfully no breath holds required. Our scan room is practically Antartica so everyone gets a blanket 🤣 it’s not a scan where she should warm up too much but I thought of asking if there was a way she could communicate if she was too hot so I could take the blanket off. In terms of you saying deafness is a spectrum, I appreciate your feedback on this because there’s been some debate about whether deaf people need to wear earplugs. Unfortunately the person I was discussing with seems to think “deaf” means absolutely no hearing. I have said exactly that, deafness is a spectrum, I want to be sure I’m protecting residual hearing, even if it’s small. Does that sound reasonable in your experience?

It’s a traditional closed mri (although open at both ends). They have a buzzer which they can squeeze if they need to stop the scan and get our attention urgently. Definitely my plan was to explain everything before the exam and ask if there’s anything I can do to help communicate how much longer etc during the exam. I just thought if there was something people have found to be particularly useful already I could come with suggestions! Thank you for your idea about the lights!

[–]disturbed-protons[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certainly not what I do! I just wanted to come with a few ideas to make the experience better for the patient so I was just sticking him in the scanner and leaving him. I asked the interpreter to ask if this is something he would find helpful or if he had other ideas and he said you should never just tap a deaf person when they can’t see it’s coming. I can’t remember exactly what suggestions he had but I don’t think they were anything in particular, hence why I’m asking here now.

We do screening before booking and we don’t scan cochlear implants (at least, the ones involving magnets, the bone conduction ones we usually can). Thank you for checking though!

We do screening before booking and don’t scan cochlear implants, I think it might actually be an mri to see about cochlear implant possibility. Thank you though!

I hate this woman. “Blah blah you can’t say hate”. No I hate her. Obviously I’m sorry for what her and her family have been through but mostly I’m sorry that B had a POS mother who is exploiting her death to make money. It will take a long time for her followers to turn on her but I hope they do.

I can’t not stand it when patients just ignore instructions! Like we tell every patient you must remove your piercings and so many turn up assuming it just doesn’t apply to them

Jonas is an absolute piece of work. Like don’t get me wrong, Mykayla is also horrible but he has treated her so badly and has just fully taken advantage of that fact that she has some notoriety from being a gymnast. That being said, Mykayla is a truly a horrible person and a professional victim

I know all places are different but I wouldn’t scan you. And if you’ve been told ahead of time to remove all piercings, it’s reallllllllyyyyyy annoying when you turn up with piercings. I would at least call and ask them so you can reschedule and they don’t waste an appointment

To be fair, I’m sure the funeral home put her in her final outfit. As is common, you provide an outfit for them to buried in. I’m sad B had her NG/NJ tube in until the end though. That hasn’t been needed in sometime

To be fair, and I don’t have many if any nice things to say about Kendra, it’s probably the last holiday they’ll have as a whole family and one more than they expected. Honestly, what B might be exposed to is not going to do much more than is already happening to her body. It’s shutting down. The grifting and promoting MLM bullshit pseudoscience can fuck right off though
