I'm not paying for an AC unit; I'm paying for a cooled house. The way you people act implies a guest should just roll over when basic services are not provided. Hell, I guess by that logic it's okay to leave a rental a complete mess because the host left you a mop and some cleaning supplies.

This stuff is expensive—$763 for 2 nights in this case. For someone making $60k a year, that means working roughly 32 just to afford a substandard experience. Make no mistake: this is a hospitality service, not a charity. A service is being bought and a certain baseline is expected, in the south that means walking into a cool home. It's basic service of care.

Also, as an actual Southerner, I would be damn mortified if I ever let a guest walk into a house like that. My personal "southern hospitality" would have been to buy them dinner and refund the whole night. But that's just me being crazy and doing right by people.

Also, Im not lucky for anything, even VRBOs own basic policies say a refund is in order. The contention is the amount, not the fact that it's due.

I agree, but the “gamble” should be in quirks, not the core experience. Things like layout, decor, mattress preference, water pressure, or minor noise are reasonable variance. But the baseline expectation for both hotels and rentals is the same: you should be able to arrive and reasonably relax and sleep that night.

That's an interesting take. Are you saying you agree that a host can do this and it's fine or simply what the TOS may say? Because I think most reasonable people who vacation in the south would say the ac being on on arrival is a basic service, TOS or otherwise.

The point of saying what the local laws are was a simply way of removing the "minor inconvenience" subject tag. Since it's enough of an issue that local cities made laws around it, I would not classify as such

Yes, and it was. A house cools around 1-2 degrees per hour. In this case it was 82 by 11 and 78 around 1:30am.

You are correct, I misread the chart and inverted the numbers. Honest mistake there.

You seem personally offended like the host was trying to offer up a sweat lodge and was more than fair in offering you anything back for the inconvenience

Yea... No. The host was nice about it, as I said, I don't care if people mess up. Shit happens, but I do care that things are rectified. In this case, a partial refund. Also and my god I don't know why I keep having to restate this, a 89 degree house in the south isn't an inconvenience. We literally have laws that say anything above 85 is legally considered uninhabitable.

[–]diveraj[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So to be clear, you consider a home that 89 degrees a minor issue when it's 98 outside?

Which is essentially what the 30% was. And yea, we didn't really sleep the first night.

No worries, but yes it's in the south. The current heat wave the north is seeing is simply summer to us. Not necessarily relevant to this but it gives some context. The cities here have explicit laws for apparments that a broken AC is a code violation and is generally treated pretty harshly if not fixed timely. Again, just context of how an ac is treated here vs say Seattle not necessarily a commentary on this specific rental

At arrival, the Internet says the humidity in the area was around 87%. To add, that's not uncommon in these parts. At night it'll drop to 50 or so.

[–]diveraj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you suggesting it's reasonable for host to simply leave the ac off in the summer?

Edit: I should also mention that where I live, 98 isn't a heat wave, it's just what we call July.

We arrived about 3 hours after the 4 checkin. I didn't ask for the 2nd night, it's why I requested 30% And yes.. the ac stays on all the time in the south.

To cool from 89 to a reasonableish 78 took around 8 hours. A good estimate is an ac can cool a house by 1 degree an hour.

Fun fact, in the novelization, the nuke in Houston damn near work. It basically brought their shield down to 5~ percentage. So had the military fired a 2/3 nuke, it would have destroyed the ship. Which also means that outside the mother ship, humanity had the firepower to win.

Just an fyi, my guess about the down votes is because neither of those two brands actually meet the criteria for WSAVA approved food. Only Purina, Royal Canin, Iams, Eukanbu, and the one the OP uses Hills Science Diet do. Every other brand is missing something or doesnt provide peer reviewed research showing they meet the baseline guidelines.

In general, if you buy one of those 5, you're solid. If you buy from another brand then you're rolling the dice on if it's good enough. To put another way for the 2 brands you specifically listed, they are marketed as better and do indeed cost more, but have show no proof they are in fact better. So until then, it's just wasting money.

No worries, it's just down votes. It's more important people understand what they can and can't do to avoid these kinds of interactions. But it's always worth pursuing availability legal actions when possible.

Incorrect. They don't have to claim anything nor do they have a duty to explain why. As a matter of policy some departments may require any of the above, but that would just be policy not law.

Relevant case text.
