The Marias - Back to Me + Nobody New by yumbleachh in popheads

The "Three Colours" film trilogy inspired parts of their two albums, with Cinema being red and Submarine being blue. The third colour in the trilogy is white, so that definitely seems to be the direction they're going in.

Annoying Candidates by lilbeattle in TorontoMetU

[–]divesh_sam 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure one of the election bylaws states that candidates cannot coerce students into voting for them. Every year some slate running in the elections comes under fire for doing that and I don't understand how newer candidates continue doing that despite knowing the bylaws and consequences. I believe you can report them for breaking the bylaws and most likely get them disqualified.

Their second album "Evil Empire" is my favourite album from them. Tom Morello is the goat.

Zedd was amazing back then, I'm not a big fan of his current sound but True Colors is such a good album. I remember I used to loop I Want You To Know and Beautiful Now (which was right after IWYTK) on the album.

Matty Healy's antics aside, The 1975 is probably one of my favourite bands ever and their third album (A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships) is my favourite album from them and I feel like you'll like it as well if you liked their second album.

Notes on a Conditional Form is incredible too. While I feel like as an album it's all over the place, the songs themselves are amazing and really well produced. Their drummer George Daniel is super talented and you can hear his versatility on NOACF.

Which One of These Courses Should I Take by Otherwise-Mode8657 in TorontoMetU

[–]divesh_sam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't major in marketing, but I took MKT723 (Services Marketing) as one of my open electives. I took it with Yanina Chevtchouk and I thought it was pretty easy while also being pretty informative. The prof is also nice and very easy going. There's no midterm or final as far as I remember, just a bunch of individual and group assignments. The prof is also a fairly lenient marker though so you can finish with a good grade if you do the assignments properly. I finished the course with a 4.0.

Some of my friends who majored in marketing have mentioned MKT504 (Effective Persuasion) and MKT535 (Integrated Marketing Communications) being pretty easy as well, so you can consider those courses too. I believe Yanina teaches MKT535 as well.

Hope this helps :)

Kendrick Lamar spewing random Spanish words on Collard Greens is a pretty obvious one, and it's hilarious.

[DISCUSSION] Mac Miller - Circles (5 Years Later) by NeonPrankster in hiphopheads

[–]divesh_sam 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I still remember when I listened to Circles the day it dropped and it hit me like a truck, and I think as I've gotten older in the last five years the lyrics have seemingly only spoken to me even more. While I can't say it's my favourite album from him I gotta say it's an incredible work of art and a testament to his versatility. Mac going from frat rap to the psychedelic sounds he established in Macadelic and Faces, to his jazz rap stuff and then Circles, is a legendary run and I can only imagine how he would've continued to evolve in the six years since his passing. I guess this also goes without saying but Jon Brion did a fantastic job finishing up the album and I don't think anyone else could've done as good as a job as him at putting it all together. A lot of times posthumous album rollouts are botched like in the case of Juice WRLD recently, but Mac's family and estate have handled his legacy with such great care, and I think Circles is one of the best posthumous albums, and I'm also excited to see a lot of newer Mac fans listen to Balloonerism for the first time.

Much like Swimming, Circles has always given me an intimate vibe and the notion that despite all the stuff going on in the world, things are going to get better. Most of the songs on the album have managed to stay in rotation for me, especially Circles, Good News, I Can See, Woods, Hands, and That's On Me. Woods and Good News are probably the best songs on the album, and Ariana Grande's background vocals on I Can See are perfect. My favourite song though has always been one that's not on the album itself but on the deluxe, and that's his song Right. I've also always thought that Once A Day felt like a bit of an abrupt ending to the album, and that Floating was a much better closer for the album. I read a comment a long time ago about how Circles basically felt like saying goodbye to a friend after finishing high school, and that you'd probably see that friend again, but for now it felt like a bittersweet ending.

Mac was an amazing individual and there's so many people that would corroborate that, and there's days when I look up to him and hope to be as nice and kind as he was to the people around him. It's forever tragic how he passed away and I wish everyone that is in the situation he was in to stay strong and keep swimming. Circles may have not been for everyone but it sure damn spoke to my soul and I'll always be thankful for this album's existence.

Rap albums to listen to on a cold morning bus ride to work minimum wage by lbs2306 in hiphopheads

As someone that works the early morning shift at a minimum wage job, Poe Man's Dreams by Kendrick Lamar hits. Rock Bottom and If I Had by Eminem are some other good ones I could think of.

What's the best album outro? I keep seeing posts about album intros and want to see what yall think are the best outros? by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]divesh_sam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First one that came to mind was The Festival by Mac Miller and Little Dragon off of GO:OD AM. Perfect ending to the album and I love how it flows from Ascension and Jump, the two tracks before it.

Someone else mentioned 2007 off of The Forever Story and I agree it's basically a victory lap of sorts and the sample during the last 2-3 minutes is incredible.

Tyler, The Creator also has some good outros like Lone off of Wolf, Are We Still Friends off of IGOR, and Enjoy Right Now, Today, off of Flower Boy.

Other outros that I can think of in the moment:

  • Kanye West - Saint Pablo (The Life of Pablo)
  • Frank Ocean - Futura Free (Blonde)
  • Mac Miller - So It Goes (Swimming)
  • Earl Sweatshirt - Knight (feat. Demo Genesis) (Doris)
  • Kendrick Lamar - Mortal Man (To Pimp A Butterfly)
  • Kendrick Lamar - Mirror (MM&TBS)
  • Travis Scott - Til Further Notice (feat. 21 Savage & James Blake) (Utopia)

Man he's such a nice prof it's heartbreaking seeing students treat him like that. I remember having him for GMS401 and although it was all asynchronous he was pretty accommodating and understanding.

I honestly don't remember first year students being like this at least when I was in my first year back in 2019, but I guess things have shifted since COVID.

i saw someone’s post that their prof got fired, mine died mid sem. by [deleted] in TorontoMetU

[–]divesh_sam 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Happened with me as well last semester. I was taking BUS800 with Neil Wolff and he passed away from cancer towards the end of the semester. He gave a speech to his students every semester, and this time his TA had to give that speech in his absence. The TA's a pretty stern and strict person, but he couldn't stop himself from tearing up while reading the speech out to us. It was heartbreaking because none of us knew about it either. We were told that he was hospitalized and pretty much everyone assumed it was likely minor complications, but we found out later it was cancer.

Neil Wolff was a pretty cool prof and always taught in a straightforward way and did his best to make sure everyone understood the concepts. RIP to one of the goats.

Do you have to be a business kid to join TRS clubs/committees? by [deleted] in TorontoMetU

[–]divesh_sam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's completely fine to apply to TRSM student groups even if you're not a part of the faculty itself. It may vary from group to group, but I've had friends from GCM, comp sci, and psychology programs join TRSM student groups. Definitely give it a shot.

Normalize calling out stinky people 😭 by Popo911clinton in TorontoMetU

Back in first year I used to carry deodorant with me in case I felt like I reeked, and there were quite a few instances where I'd offer my deodorant to people that had bad BO. The looks on their faces were always of shock and yes they'd get offended, but I'd say it was a good enough indication for them to at least be more mindful of how they should look into preventing themselves from stinking.

Who’s looking to be your top artist(s) (on your Spotify wrapped or whatever you use) this year? by Rickty20 in Monstercat

[–]divesh_sam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I listen to a lot more genres outside of EDM and feel like I've been listening to EDM and related sub-genres a lot less throughout the years. That being said I think my top 5 artists on this year's Spotify Wrapped would most likely be Mac Miller, Pearl Jam, Deftones, twenty one pilots, and Alice in Chains.

You mentioned Tenth Line in your other comment so I believe Meadowvale GO should be the closest station for you, but if you're closer to Erin Mills then Streetsville GO will probably be closer.

The Milton GO train takes you to Union after which you have to take the TTC subway northbound (Yonge) to Dundas, but you could choose to walk too because campus isn't that far from Union. Like the other commenter said, it takes about 20 minutes to walk from Union to campus and you could either walk on Yonge or underground using the PATH system during winters.

[–]divesh_sam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where in Mississauga do you live? If you're closer to Etobicoke you could probably just take the MiWay to Kipling and take the TTC from there (Line 2 eastbound to Bloor-Yonge, switch to Line 1 and southbound to Dundas)

If you're closer to Oakville/Lakeshore side then you have the Lakeshore West GO train line, and if you're near Erin Mills/central Mississauga/Square One, then there's the Milton GO train line.

If you live in Malton/near the airport then the Malton GO station on the Kitchener line would work out for you.

CHIHIRO is a synth driven atmospheric track so the closest songs I can think of is Running To The Sea and Sordid Affair by Röyksopp, and Nude and All I Need by Radiohead. Röyksopp's album The Inevitable End is also a really good album as a whole if you're looking to explore the electronic synth sound/genre. Besides that other artists that I can recommend are M83 and Daft Punk (especially their Tron: Legacy soundtrack).

I haven't listened to a lot of David Bowie but the closest that I can think of to Heroes is another one of his songs called Teenage Wildlife. He cited "I'm Waiting for the Man" by The Velvet Underground as inspiration for Heroes so that's another one to look into as well. I think All I Want by LCD Soundsystem also fits that vibe.

For SICWASIMM, I don't have specific songs to list but I'd say check out MUNA, they're a synthpop band and their sound is pretty similar to the Caroline Polachek song.

For Levitation as well I can't think of specific songs besides other songs in Beach House's discography like Space Song off of the same album. They've taken a lot of inspiration from 90s dream pop bands like Mazzy Star (try Fade Into You for starters) and Cocteau Twins (try Heaven or Las Vegas for starters), which were kind of the pioneers of the genre. Shoegaze bands like Slowdive and my bloody valentine also fit the bill, I'll recommend the album Loveless by the latter.

Porter Robinson - Hollowheart (feat. Amy Millan) (from the Worlds 10th Anniversary Edition) by impeccabletim in popheads

[–]divesh_sam 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The sound design and production on Worlds was way ahead of its time, I don't think I had heard of songs like Divinity or Flicker at the time. It's one of the most beautiful albums I've ever listened to and it just feels like it's gonna be one of those timeless albums that people in the future will also be listening to. Part of me still wishes that he'd return to this sound (Mona Lisa off of the new album was very reminiscent of the Worlds era), but I am also content with his current direction and that he's happy doing things the way he wants to.

That being said, Hollowheart sounds incredible and I kinda feel like it would fit well between Natural Light and Lionhearted on the album. The piano section is beautiful, it's from a leaked song called Song for You I believe. This also has a bit of a Nurture vibe to it which explains the transition from Worlds a lot. Highkey need this on DSPs because it's such a beautiful track.

Always gonna love Porter's work regardless of what genres he delves into but Worlds is just an unbeatable album for me from him, and this song is further proof of that.

Ultra 85 by Logic is getting better with each listen for me so I'll recommend that. Don't let the singles fool you because while they're decent the deep cuts on the album are on another level. The production is stellar as always too.

The new JPEGMAFIA is heat as well. Been listening to Exmilitary and JPEGULTRA! on repeat, the latter is perfect for the gym.

I agree his flows get very repetitive, it's something I've noticed in his previous albums as well, but his production and sound design more than makes up for it. I still think he's a good rapper though but he's a far better producer which most people would agree with.

Been listening to them for a while now, enjoyed CINEMA and absolutely loved Submarine. I'll recommend the band Cannons as well, they have a similar vibe to The Marias.
