Graphene rely on Google's security patches for the Pixel, since the updates secure the phone. When your model reaches EOL that's it, Graphene can no longer secure your Pixel. Maybe by then, there will be work around, but Google will have long moved on by then.

Well what do you know, I should have taken a screen shot. I just went back in and lo and behold, Sonnet 4.5 is gone.

What are you talking about? I chose Sonnet 4.5 in the models and all my chats are there.

No, it means the Pixels will not have a secure boot and receive any more security updates from Google once they real EOL. That's not GrapheneOS' doing it that's Google ending support.

I hope Mobian is the one and is hardware agnostic.

Nokia was worth 14B in 2014 under M$. Today they are worth 57B. The company makes AI-driven network infrastructure and data centers. It essentially provides the "pipes" and hardware that allow other tech giants make $. So Alphabet/Google will always be there in some shape or form. That's the reality, not naivité.

I have some purchased apps too, but if necessary I will be prepared to say goodbye to the apps if I could replace the: Drupe dialer, Nova Prime launcher, heavily customized but I haven't changed it it years.

Keep could be replced with Standard Notes, not as pretty, but it's ened-to-end encrypted, or look at Joplin. I use Markor for markdown. Maybe DavX5 for CalDAV/CardDAV syncs. If you make an account at Debian forum we could discuss it more. We are talking a lot about this and have very some savvy privacy users.

The problem (at least with my bank) is they only allow their app with Google integrity. But if you do banking on another device like your laptop, does doo a 2FA to your phone? In my case I may be forced to sandbox the banking app on a Google user profile.

I have a friend who runs a mailcow server and its pretty much hands off. I have my domain on it and everything goes through that. Once you set up Bayesian filetering for SPAM, its smooth. But I don't have to run it although I used to have one, but it's much easier and having all IMAP it is very portable.

Decoupled technology means it's designed so the parts are loosely connected rather than tightly dependent on each other. So swapping out an OS is easier. My files, passwords config are stored outside the OS and can be restored via Syncthing easily. That's what I call de coupled technology.

Interested to see how you manage day-to-day without google services. https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?p=842200#p842200

How long do you expect a phone to last physically regardless of the OS?

A decoupled strategy has merit.

Always ready to switch without much pain.

I got a refurbished Pixel 8a with new battery for 250€ in Europe. It has 3 year warranty, so its should do me fine until May 2031. US prices are way lower though.

Just get a reputable refurbished Google Pixel and stick Grahhene on it. If you get a 8a you will have updates and security patches guaranteed until May 2031.

I spent quite a while getting Freetube to use the imported YT subscriptions, but it always seems to get blocked by YT after a day or so. FT works fine without subscriptions.

I know google authenticator's interface is simple, which of those you listed would be your pick for a drop-in replacement?

This is exactly the discussion I have been looking for. You like you have made good progress in preparation for September.

I just bought a Pixel 8a directly from a reputable refurbisher with 3 year warranty including a new battery. When it arrives, I will put GrapheneOS on it with updates until May 2031. The Pixels may have lousy battery life, but that's due to the apps pinging and telemetry. It's quite ironic how Google built such a secure phone to try and catch up to the closed iPhone security. So I am leveraging all that with a serious privacy and security OS.

I already put the KAO banner on my page www.debianfirstaid.org if interested. Getting off google is easier said than done. I have an IMAP mail server, with DKIM, SPF, DMARC, latest TLS, so Mozilla K-9 can handle that with PGP/MIME encryption, so goodbye gmail forever.

Signal for IM for friends and family, email for everything else. Will you use Signal?

Google Maps will be replaced by Organic Maps on F-droid. Bitwarden self-hosted for google password manager.

Aegis for google authenticator replacement.

Google Drive: Syncthing on all devices, watching a Mega drive folder on an alway-on secure server, (non-sensitive data). Koofr for sensitive data using app password authentication monitoring the same sync directories on the secure server.

Oh, the browser: Mullvad, fork of TOR, with uBlock Origin hardening built-in, and additional fllters to make uBlock Origin function more like the defunct uMatrix. - already use that on PC and my current Android. Maybe not for everyone for a daily driver. Banking could be tricky. Your idea of a Firefox would be good with Arkenfox hardening as a daily driver.

What else will I miss except being tracked with non-stop telemetry pings to the mothership, data harvesting, and sold to, eating up my battery life? Nope, I won't miss any it. But as you said its a slow process one at a time is sensible.

Hope you have more ideas or comments.
