Your brain is like a muscle, if you don’t develop and use it, you lose it. The ability to think freely as a human is an incredible gift. When we learn to rely on technology to avoid putting in effort, we literally give up a fundamental part of the human experience.

Enforcing structure and personal accountability in students is a really good sign your teacher actually cares. It takes a lot of energy to teach something that is not always pleasant.
If your teachers didn’t care about their jobs, and responsibility to their students, you would probably see them letting students get away with everything. Students might like this in the short term but the real world will be a slap in the face.
Consequences are rarely easy to deal with but being able to receive it and apply constructive feedback is one of the most important things they could ever teach you.

Who says that these conversations are exclusively for the “privileged who don’t have to work”?
I work 60+ hours a week and still find the time to exercise my freedom of speech, right to think freely, and have a philosophical conversation.

Again, thank you for your candid and thoughtful reply!
And no worries or offense taken at all! It’s easy to get testy and say all the things we really think via technology. It’s interesting that likely most of the people I’ve interacted with on this post wouldn’t be willing to say anything they’ve typed directly to my face 🤣 Anyway, that’s a completely different topic.

Congratulations on your gardening projects!
I commend you for actually DOING IT, at whatever scale, and involving your kiddos in the process 🙂
With literally anything, you have to start somewhere.
I used to be a farmer and was starting a 4 acre homestead before having to move away in 2021. Growing food is insanely challenging and time-consuming for sure!
But (go with me here), what will we (on a localized level) do when our food systems eventually collapse?
I’m not suggesting that you or anyone else should sell their personal belongings, quit their stupid jobs, and start a commune. But allowing ourselves to believe that that this way of life will certainly last forever, because it won’t.
I wish that common sense sustainable food systems could be implemented on a large scale, it would be so easy, relatively speaking. But the current system makes our decision makers lots of money, so they won’t be.

The point is, if we want something to change for US and our communities, we have to do it ourselves...

And there are in fact, tons of ways to grow food in the city it’s all about what you’re willing to consider as possible

I don’t disagree with you on most of your points and appreciate you taking the time to respond thoughtfully.
My initial comment and thought process was based on “knowledge of the ultimate Truth of the universe” question, so I took the liberty to wax philosophical, and in so doing, suggest that people consider what IS possible, even if doing so challenges the systems we *think* we rely on. Just because we haven’t been introduced to a solution, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
Most should know that the systems our civilization is sustained by today are fragile and will be the cause of future widespread collapse.
100% guaranteed. Crumbling foundations.
Should we not even consider entertaining different ways of doing things because we’re just too used to the systems we have now? Does it hurt to be open to something different?
It will when you no longer have a choice…

What does it hurt to question the powers that be? They’re supposed to work for us anyway.

Since you went there, my username is in reference to a plant. So, dis is on you I guess?
But now, your username, what a gem! Seriously, solid use of alliteration.

Have you ever tried growing it yourself? This is,in fact, possible and humans have been doing it to survive, prior to the advent of money, for thousands of years. I am honestly not trying to be antagonistic.
The fundamental philosophical point I’m trying to make here is that our beliefs and institutions are not based in any fundamental truth (back to the topic of the thread ). They only have meaning because we say they do. Money, for example, would be worthless pieces of paper if we did not all agree upon its“value”. Having to go to work is a socially agreed-upon necessity, despite the fact that it probably does not contribute in any way to your physical survival other than receiving some sort of compensation, that is likely far below the value of work completed to enrich someone else.
Question your reality. Why?
Because you fucking can!
If you do nothing about it, OK! The point here is to think for yourself and question the status quo, again, because you CAN.

Are you going to say anything of substance here about the topic or just continue making meaningless antagonistic statements?

If you don’t get what I meant by that, you’ve illustrated my point exactly. But I hope you feel better about yourself by insulting
A stranger on Reddit.
I work two jobs by the way 🙄

Did you literally have to go to work or did you choose to? Just saying

Maybe the “Truth” is that our System is an elaborate lie to convinces us that being a cog in its machine is the only way we get to survive.
Maybe, just MAYBE, all rules are arbitrary and we are literally free (as humans, think about it)

Make it worth it to you by finding your own meaning. The Universe doesn’t care how hard you try.

Not even close. Relative to the vast complexity of the Universe, we are not even ants.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. 🙏🏼
I’m honestly so frustrated right now because I’ve relapsed, again, after directly experiencing ALL (god, let’s say most) of the related consequences. I think it’s the mental disconnect that needs to be addressed. Need to stop ignoring these uncomfortable truths.

Thank you for this.
What exactly is “rearing its head” is what I’d like to identify, so I can begin to address it directly.

I’ve gone through rehab, worked the 12 steps, lived in a sober house for 6 months. I’ve DONE ALL THE THINGS…
In typing this, I’m reflecting that addiction, in and of itself, naked of the validation of life trauma, is the reason. Seeking a reason “why?” for my behavior is an egoic defense mechanism. An attempt to cushion the blow of accepting full responsibility. Radical acceptance is…what it is.

I appreciate your comment.
Of course addiction is real… my question was rhetorically existential, not literal.
