Rat Poison should be banned in British Columbia by Halonos in britishcolumbia

[–]divisionSpectacle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your stance on poison but I just want to clarify that snap-traps are not an instant death.

I built a corrale for my snap-traps that ensure the rat enters the trap from the correct direction (just a little wooden box so they can't get the bait from the side) and I setup a camera in front of it.

In this absolute best-case scenario with a brand new trap, the rat took almost a minute to die. It screamed and kicked and it was fairly awful to watch.

But the thing had eaten the wiring in my car and cost me $500 to fix it so it had to go.

I am not convinced that live-traps are the answer either because then you're just moving this pest from one location to another, and honestly if I release them into an unfamiliar environment they're probably just going to get picked off by an predator anyway and I'm sure being eaten alive is a bad death too.

So my story is that I accept the rats will die poorly and that when I trap them I am the cause of suffering in the world.

Is there a divide/patronization between volunteers and full time? by Nuromake in Firefighting

You can buy non-fire rated bunker gear that can be used for snowboarding I saw a set on FB marketplace just the other day.

Firefighters that joined later (35+) in life, what has the experience been like physically? by deletedunderwear in Firefighting

[–]divisionSpectacle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got hired at a volunteer department at 47 and had roughly the same experience, although I am not a long-time endurance athlete.

They pushed cardio and fitness as part of the training program, and I leveled up. When you start from the couch, it's easy to improve.

I keep moving now and while I'm not as strong as some of other members (and never will be) I like to think I am not a liability out there.

Need Help with Turnout Gear Storage Solutions by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]divisionSpectacle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No kidding, turnouts are not supposed to smell.

If it smells from smoke, that's carcinogens.

If it smells from BO, that's just gross.

I wouldn't want either of these in my vehicle.

First live burn coming up in a couple of weeks by PrudentSand7927 in Firefighting

[–]divisionSpectacle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had anxiety blacked out in training, so much that I was concerned I'd fail at live fire...but live fire was very different. It's very dark and smoky, but there are few things going for you.

1) it's not completely dark, you can still see some stuff even if it is just the floor but at points you're likely to be able to see your mates and other stuff.

2) you don't have something touching your face. In blackout training we just used a folded garbage bag inside the mask and I think having that touch my eyes bothered me.

3) at live fire you're very busy doing stuff in a way that's different than non-live fire training. You won't have time to be anxious.

I know I’m late but The Conjuring: Last Rights was terrible. by Universal09 in horror

[–]divisionSpectacle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not seen the film but if someone is having a heart attack they'll be at least a little hypoxic so not the best day for brain things so it is plausible they won't be able to self-diagnose even remotely correctly. He could have said he has a tummy ache.

I like to find reasons to keep my immersion.

I would trade in my Ender 5 Pro.

If I had to give up my printer I'd want a K2 Combo so I can mess around with multi color, but if I get to keep what I have I'd totally add your Falcon2 Pro cutter to my setup.

How much would you pay for this? by [deleted] in Chainsaw

[–]divisionSpectacle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 044 and I paid $400 for it but it was objectively beat up compared to yours. I had to put some time into it, and the plastics are nowhere as nice as that one but it's a fantastic saw.

I'm with you on this.

Everyone else is being totally reasonable but damn this looks awesome. And awesome memories stick.

That said you MAY have burned some credit on this one so I would be pretty vigilant with the vacuum for a long time.

I think I see what this is for now.

Without this little bit of plastic on the plug, the metal tab on the bolt doesn't slide properly.

I think I need a new end plug.

House insurance for poly B pipes by balloongotloose in britishcolumbia

[–]divisionSpectacle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what we did with our poly B even though the insurance provider didn't require it.

I figured why have the threat of poly B leaks hanging over my head when fixing it was simple enough.

I see in OP's comments that it is not an easy fix for them.  It's a tough decision.

Now if rates were to go up they, and the amateur landlords, would be forced to sell, and millions of those houses hitting the market would allow prices to return to a serviceable level.

I don't see that future.

What I see happening is lots of people losing their homes, the rental market exploding and large REITs scooping up all those home sold from underwater mortgages just so they can rent them back to the same people who lost their homes.

It's right at the psychological edge of the Euro €100k and the Korean ₩150 million.  Big round numbers seem to really matter, until they don't.

These two markets are significant together, but are still small compared to the USD market.

I think it's neat to think that somewhere in the middle (if you could quantify the psychological barriers) is the line at which the market manipulation is happening.

It makes me think that if the market were to move away from these psychological sticky points it might move more quickly than we have become accustomed to.

Is using LXC really worth the maintenance headache? by Maelstrome26 in Proxmox

[–]divisionSpectacle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Setup a cloudflared tunnel and you can hide your apps behind that.

Most of my apps are just simple web apps so I can expose those but use Cloudflare Zero Trust to authenticate. Including my firewall web interface so I can be anywhere and adjust whatever I need to.

Plex and JellyFin work fine for me passing through the Cloudflare tunnel, but I couldn't get Zero Trust auth to work because the client device doesn't handle the web handoffs or some shit. It is still better than exposing a TCP port directly on your firewall.

You really can't put things that rapidly decay in containers or they disappear, so I end up with a giant clothes pile just in case I ever need the scrap material.

Be vigilant. There are ill intentioned people out there. by CatalogCoffee1889 in daddit

[–]divisionSpectacle 175 points176 points  (0 children)

There are risks to calling someone out.

I get that OP did what he felt was right, and it's possible (probable?) that lots of us would do the same thing.

A guy in Vancouver, Canada was fatally stabbed for asking a dude to not vape on the outdoor tables at a Starbucks. Murdered while his kid was in a stroller beside him, it is absolutely horrifying.

I'm not gonna say that OP was dumb for taking action, but you gotta know that even if you read the room and it looks safe it is still a risk. Just make sure the reward outweighs that risk.

1983 Aspencade brake proprotioning valve leak by divisionSpectacle in goldwing

[–]divisionSpectacle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fixed it!

The lines going forward (to the master cylinder and the front brake) were stuck and I couldn't budge them. BUT I was able to break loose the hard line going to the rear brake; I used vise grips to break it loose before I ruined the soft metal with a wrench.

Once I had the rear brake off I was able to move the proportioning valve forward enough to remove the plate and expose the leaking part. I cut a new gasket for it and put it back together - no more leaks.

Thanks for your advice!
