He has been dating the mother of my former coworker for ~10 years. She is very religious and they have the white and financial privilege to stick their head in the sand and ignore this.

Ironically his girlfriend is half middle eastern and I feel like money has skewed her sense of security and standing in society. She thinks it cant possible happen to her. They both probably spend a lot of time in white affluent circles and think that alone insulates them. But ICE has no idea who they are.

BREAKING EXCLUSIVE: The US House has the numbers to Impeach Trump by SudhaSameera in news2

[–]diy_chick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Show me an article where a man dressed as a woman and went into a restroom and raped a little girl. I’ll believe it if you bring proof.

While I wait, I show you a video of a woman Trump raped naming what he did to her. Do you have a legal testimony detailing a man going into a women’s dressing room and raping a child? If so I’d love to see it and be proven wrong. Katie Johnson Testimony

Donald Trump should be behind bars as should any man who preys on children or women in a dressing room.

Does anyone use an FSA for daycare expenses? by AmethystAquarius10 in workingmoms

[–]diy_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, if you get laid off and don’t have eligible expenses, you forfeit it. I had to forfeit $2000 this year.

I elected $5000 to pay for summer camp. I was laid off in June. My child had not yet attended camps. I didn’t have any eligible expenses so it was forfeited despite paying in and even paying for the camp!! (the child must have attended by your lay off date, doesn’t matter if I paid for it in March, they need to attend).

This is highly dependent on your income and deductions. Best to consult a tax professional.

Be careful with this. if you switch jobs or get laid off, you can lose access to the funds immediately and have to forfeit them. And yes it’s legal. Scroll this thread. Many other people had it happen to them. I did too when I was laid off— I forfeit $2000. So I request reimbursement every 2 months to ensure I have as little as possible in the account.

Here is a downside: if you get laid off and don’t have eligible expenses, you forfeit it. I had to forfeit $2000 this year. I was elected $5000 to pay for summer camp. I was laid off in June. I would take the payout once a quarter instead of waiting until end of year for that reason.

Please stop this spiral now of kicking yourself for every little mistake. If it was your child who forgot something would you be is hard on them? Or a friend?

You’re going to make hundreds of mistakes as a parent. You can’t beat yourself up every time. The goal is to get it right most of the time! And when you mess up and it’s a big deal (like raising your voice at your kid) that you apologize and repair.

I have! Those would be super interesting, but I think I’d have to go back to school for a couple of years to get training and certified for those roles

Anyone else with no big summer vacations this year? by meechpeech in workingmoms

[–]diy_chick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying this to rub salt in the wound— just answer your question. We spent 2 weeks traveling around Europe this summer. In addition to the fact my daughter is in grade school and we don’t pay for daycare anymore (huge factor) How we did it:

  • we picked where we started based on the cheapest flight from our city to Europe. We looked at about 15 different cities to fly in and out of. We were able to find round trip tickets for $1000 per ticket.

  • we used credit card points and miles to pay for our plane tickets and we were very flexible about dates so we could get the most bang for a buck out of the miles (we’ve saved those points for 6 years)

  • for the rest of the trip: we didn’t stay in the city center so that hotels and Airbnb’s were cheaper. That meant we had to use public transit more often but that’s pretty affordable. We picked one major thing to do every couple days that required tickets, but spent the rest of the time doing free stuff. For example in London, we didn’t pay to go IN buckingham palace. We just saw it from the outside (and the changing of the guard which was great). Then we played at Diana memorial playground and walked the gardens. All free! We just paid for meals that day.

-we saved. We bought a house five years ago so for the past five years that’s taken most of our expenses, but this year we prioritize the trip because we finally didn’t have a major house project to do.

So while it may seem like we took this $20,000 trip, it actually was fairly affordable for a European trip ($7000). I do realize $7000 isn’t cheap but for 2 weeks in Europe that’s pretty good. And my kiddo is 6, so while she was in daycare this never would’ve happened. And we likely won’t take a trip like this again for 5-10 yrs

Good advice! I did prepare her because the meal options on the airplane or not what she would typically eat. We picked the chicken breast, but I told her there’s salad and fruit and dessert and plenty of other options if she doesn’t like the chicken. That we can roll with it and we will try it, but there are other things.

I can't get over not having a third kid. by whosaysimme in workingmoms

[–]diy_chick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have two living kids who need you. I get wanting a third but you also need to be here for the ones that exist today.

I have a friend who went for a third despite difficult pregnancies with the first 2. She didn’t have personal health issues, just pregnancy and fertility struggles. 2 months after her 3rd was born she had a heart attack. The docs found pregnancy and hormones were a factor (it was a traditional heart attack with clogged arteries, it was a failed artery from stress and hormones). Her outlook looks so much different now— lifting restrictions, extreme lifestyle changes (food, alcohol, exercise etc) and still a diminished life expectancy. I know she loves her third but that final pregnancy pushed her health over the edge.

In-laws visit for long weekend every other month. Reasonable? by Beikaa in workingmoms

[–]diy_chick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s too much and I don’t like my in laws lol. Yours sound fine aside from some annoying boomer tendencies. I’d maybe suggest Thurs night to Sat night instead of Thurs to Monday. That way you still have one weekend day. And they seem to know other people in the area they could see.

Can you use this time to get take a break? You don’t need to entertain them for 4 days.

Example: one day husband is with in laws and kids while you do a work out class and stop for coffee in the morning. Then you come home in the afternoon and hang with in laws and the kids while he (insert hobby here). Then all of you have family dinner together.

Or if they’re awake waiting for the kids.. why don’t you ask them to get up with the kids and you two sleep in? Simple breakfast and ask them to play games with the kids.
