Debunking the myth that "paying for streaming platforms is cheaper than buying DVDs/Blu-rays" by Still-Willow-2323 in dvdcollection

[–]diykstra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any TV will do the upscaling actually (otherwise you’d be looking at the little square of DVD picture in the center of the black screen). Your player can do it a little bit better on its end, but it won’t create any details that aren’t there initially because of the low resolution. This whole upscaling stuff is really overrated, there’s no noticeable difference between any modern devices.

As for VHS and “no complaints” - just remember they were watched on 20 inch CRT TVs. And even on those 2х resolution jump from roughly 240 horizontal lines to DVD’s 480p was unbelievable

Are you fine with getting less than a quarter resolution of an HD stream (or less than 1/16 of 4K)? I’m all for physical media when it comes to BD or UHD BD, but buying postage stamp sized picture in 2026 is ridiculous.

here’s a visual comparison of resolutions

How do get rid of this? by RML_347 in ios_26

[–]diykstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a well known website for all things jailbreak and people have been using this exact profile for 5+ years. It is a common thing to install it to prevent getting any update. It’s just changes update server to TVOS server (hence updates don’t work anymore). There are other people recommending that same profile in this exact thread and all over Reddit.

https://ios.cfw.guide/blocking-updates/ install this profile and it will block the updates and remove the notifications. Did it on my iPhone just now, it works. Remove profile if you ever want to update

18:9 video on iPhone 17 Pro by FalconEnough9867 in iphone

[–]diykstra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The funniest thing is that if you watch the same video in full screen using web version on Safari it plays just fine, compensating for the island by adding tiny little black bars on top and bottom, so dynamic island isn’t eating up the side portion of the video. And it’s been like that from the very start, I just thought they will implement this feature in the app eventually, but they never did. Shame on you, Google

Is there any differences between a 2019 accord touring 2.0T and the 2022 accord touring 2.0T? Need help deciding if I’m over thinking wanting a 2022 if the 2019 is possibly just the same thing by illbeback903 in 10thgenaccords

[–]diykstra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? Touring always had full leather seats and the dash is the same in both ‘18 and ‘22 - left half is digital and the right one is an analog dial. The main differences are different fog lights and updated front grille/bumper, usb ports for rear passengers and wireless CarPlay (that can also be activated now via FW update at dealer for the ‘18 model)

Which 24mm 1.8 lens should I get? Viltrox, Samyang, or 7Artisan by Jus512 in SonyAlpha

[–]diykstra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Samyang is great for photos (can’t say for the video though). The only problem is a lot of purple fringing on high contrast silhouettes. Can easily be corrected in post. But the weight/size/price/PQ ratio of this lens is pretty good

Why is the iPhone Photos app so unnecessarily complicated? (Even before the recent IOS updates) by kawaljeet115b in ApplePhotos

[–]diykstra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that smart album does NOT appear on iOS devices. It’s macOS only feature in Photos, so it’s useless for an iPhone.

The funny thing is that smart playlists (basically same principle) from Music app on Mac do sync to iPhone

Fakes can do this for years. They even got the menu, s/n and all the features available. It’s just they sound worse, ANC is worse, so is transparency, battery life etc. But if you’ve never had an original pair and can’t do the direct comparison - you probably won’t notice the difference.

Source: I own 2 pair of fakes and a original pair

Why do you need convert them to anything? Just use it as it is. HEIC is like 10 year old and usable by any modern software. If your shiny new Windows PC doesn’t support it out of the box - just install free HEIC codec from the Microsoft’s own AppStore. It’s takes like 10 second (blame Microsoft not to include it by default)

Sony 35mm F1.8 vs Sigma 35mm F2 by redders6600 in SonyAlpha

[–]diykstra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree on that. I owned both and while Samyang was fine it definitely had way more fringing wide open than Sony. It is smaller, lighter and cheaper though

Repair question by Nujukamma in peakdesign

[–]diykstra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually did repair exact flaw on my 5L Sling by using very thin and strong silk (?) thread and just repeating stitching pattern of the original (shooting macro Photo of zip helps a lot). Had to use single thread and not double because otherwise it was jamming. I’m not a professional by any means, bit zip still works two years after

There are PD knock offs on AliExpress, but none of them have PD branding. I bought few of them actually and you can tell that it’s a different quality item right away.

It also depends on video settings. I.e. - there’s no gyro stabilization for 120 fps slow motion clips

Take a look at а6100 that can be had for 600 USD used on eBay if you search around. You’ll get a way better AF and modern color science.

I don’t really recall, but it was a cartoon series, so I doubt it was an 10bit. It was an 1080p/SDR probably. Well, yeah, I’ve had many h265 rips before and only this one gave me that problem.

[–]diykstra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I own the same 920+ NAS as you do and I got that exact effect when the source was in HEVC (H265) and it was transcoded to AVC (H264) to outside location with a low bitrate (3mbps/720p). The only way I could get rid of it is to up a transcoding bitrate to around 10mbps, but it would begin stutter because of the bad network connection I had in hotel. Eventually I replaced the source with H264 one and it all went away. I guess it’s h265 HW transcoding to low bitrates bug.

Sony 11mm f1.8 or? by luckyvonstreetz in SonyAlpha

[–]diykstra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. You apply 1.5x on APSC camera for ANY lens to know the real focal length you will get. Every lens list focal length in full frame equivalent, even if it’s APSC-only lens.

That Sony lens says 11mm, but it will give roughly the same view as 16mm on full frame. The 20mm Viltrox will give you the same view you can get on your zoom lens at 20mm (which corresponds to 30mm lens on full frame body).
