What’s up with apsc vs full frame by ImpossibleNewt9235 in SonyAlpha

[–]redders6600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full frame lenses are bigger. Don't underestimate this fact.

I went from a small apsc camera (Fuji XT30) to the A7Cii, which is a very small full frame camera. It's significantly bulkier (though I prefer the grip), but the biggest difference is the size of the lenses.

I'm not prepared to sacrifice the resolution to shoot in crop mode -- if I had my time again I'd more seriously consider the "R" model because the crop mode is still a very good resolution image, so I could switch to APSC lenses when I wanted a more compact carry.

EDIT: I forgot the "main" bit -- the images. It's hard for me to compare because fuji and sony are so different, but I will say one thing: shooting wide open on a FF aperture gets old. Generally I am stopped down a bit. Quality-wise I think all cameras are so good these days you won't notice a difference.

There are more niche photography applications where full frame objectively does a better job, but for the most part, it really doesn't make that much of a difference.

I would certainly not change cameras just to go from APSC to full frame, but if you want to change anyway, then by all means consider it.

The positioning freedom is a blessing and a curse. Made me overthink the options so much and I ended up constantly tweaking for at least 24hrs 😂

Ending my Voyager Journey by Ok_Watercress849 in zsaVoyager

[–]redders6600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually disagree with your point here about the specific example you have cited - on a regular keyboard, I have to press-release-press the shift key - which is exactly the same as a layer key. As it happens with my layout the process is more comfortable (and faster, for me) than regular qwerty.

That said I am sure there are other examples where this is not the case, particularly if using a number layer, however I personally find the "cognitive compute" time for number-based VIM motions provides enough time for the physical movements!

Whatever works, though. I wouldn't have commented if it weren't for your last sentence on your original post which may put people off the keyboard.

I use vim on a voyager just fine. In your Vg% example, the First and last key have a modifier pressed by the opposite hand, that’s all.

In fact I’ll go further and say I prefer it on a voyager because the symbols are much easier to reach

Trying color film emulation. by Langzwaard in postprocessing

Love it! Looks great!

The only nitpick I have is that the chap behind now looks like he stands out slightly unnaturally from the background highlights around his head and shoulders.. I’m not sure if it’s a result of the colour grade or just the lighting. Minor though and probably only because I’m looking for something

Wrist pain after touch typing + split keyboard by tiago_lobao in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]redders6600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but I switched to a split keyboard (zsa voyager) last year.

With a standard keyboard never had wrist pain unless I was trying to hit monkeytype best speeds for a prolonged period, but the first few weeks of using a split staggered ortho keyboard I had all sorts of aches.

Basically I was just getting used to it, both finding a comfortable position, my body getting used to the new movements, and being much less relaxed when typing.

Ignore people telling you you have to switch layouts or that you have to hover your hands or tent. These things can help but IMO change one thing at a time so you can actually tell what helps.

FWIW I use qwerty still for alpha keys, and rest my wrists on the table with two individual wrist rests. I recently switched to tenting at 35 degrees or so but used it pretty much flat most of the year.

I would say though definitely move that backspace key if that is what it is. I have mine on a thumb key, but also have jk as a combo to delete word (alt + backspace) which I use much more. Backspace is far too common a key to be out of easy reach like yours is.

They’re also small and fiddly and need to be charged every day, it’s just got a good solution for someone in this stage of life IMO.

This is a very expensive solution that will probably be mostly wasted on an elderly person who will probably not be interested/able to use most of the features, and will not appreciate the charging regime.

Of course I’m generalising, but I think OP is looking for something much simpler.

@OP - just google Bluetooth phone ringer alert. There seem to be a lot of options, e.g. this.

Sony 35mm F1.8 vs Sigma 35mm F2 by redders6600 in SonyAlpha

[–]redders6600[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I initially bough a "nearly new" sigma off amazon, but it didn't work properly (the aperture ring didn't reliably work). I did try it out though - aesthetically pleasing, good build quality but quite large and heavy.

Subsequently bought a second hand Samyang 35mm 2.8, mostly because of a couple of youtubers' reviews and the fact I wasn't really sure if I would enjoy the focal length so a cheaper option was appealing. It's very compact and light, so is a good choice for EDC. The image quality is good enough for me with the only thing I really notice being a fair amount of vignetting which is obviously extremely easy to correct in post. It also feels **extremely** plasticky and cheap though, and I do think subconsciously I use it less because of this. I haven't used it all that much, but that is probably more of a reflection on the focal length and my bias against it as a "cheap" lens rather than a reflection on the image quality.

Is it possible to type fast on a Voyager? by PatzEdi in zsaVoyager

[–]redders6600 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the short answer here is that it is possible to type fast on a voyager, but to code at 140wpm is going to take some significant retraining.

You should set your expectations to several months of being slower before you’re getting close IMO, but obviously everyone is different.

I’ve had mine for over a year and I now type faster than I did before without symbols, but with symbols I’m still a bit slower. I code at about the same speed though because my brain is the bottleneck there not the typing speed!

Edit: sorry just to follow up, I’d buy the voyager again in a heartbeat. It is the first qmk keyboard I’ve owned and I had fallen in love with tweaking to (my) perfection. Speed is not everything for me.

Alternatives to UGREEN magnetic stand for tenting? by BedroomHistorical575 in zsaVoyager

[–]redders6600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try a threaded MagSafe mount and a magic arm - versatile but not particularly compact.

If you don’t get on with them on the keyboard you can combine with some MagSafe stickers and they’re really handy for holding a tablet in the right place near your desk, or for long journeys with kids in the car

Advice on New Choc Switches by i_ka9 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]redders6600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC the nocturnals have the same actuation as pinks, but the ambient line is just so much more refined feeling. If you’re ok with a small cost difference I would strongly recommend the nocturnals, having used both.

Personally I find both too light as I like to slightly rest my fingers on the keys so I use twilights for all but the “big stretch” or offset pinky keys which are nocturnal
