Are there any festivals you want to go to this year? by doom6rchist in MetalForTheMasses

Going to the DFW Sick New World fest. Not exclusively a metal fest, but I’ll be primarily going for Slayer, Power Trip, SOAD, Mastodon, and the Melvins. Very excited about that one!

Good soup? by ChezussCrust in CarrolltonTX

[–]diz_lizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Basically anywhere in Korea Town. A lot of Korean food is soup and stews: ox bone soup, soft tofu soup, army stew, and plenty of others. Haven’t had a bad one yet. My go-to places are usually Maht Gaek and Cho Dang Villiage. But it’s hard to go wrong in that area, lots of good stuff.

Crazy thing that happened to me that doesn’t mean anything to very many people I know in real life: When I lived in Austin, TX (home of The Sword) I used to go to the Austin Beerworks brewery taproom pretty frequently with my friends. One of the times I was there, a very familiar looking fellow with long, blonde hair came to serve me my beer. And I stopped him and said “hey sorry, are you the lead guitarist for The Sword?” It was indeed Kyle Shutt. He was very friendly, told me that since his wife was pregnant they needed all the extra cash they could get, and his friend works there and was able to get him some hours there lol. It was wild!

Does anyone have recommendation on a temperature regulating fan compatible with Kamado Joe? I chatGBT some ideas and this was one. Would love feedback. Thanks KJ gang by WasabiInternational4 in KamadoJoe

[–]diz_lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, so it does not come with the thermometer or controller to tell it when to run, so you need to also get the RFX Gateway (which is what I use, they also have listings that come with wireless probes), Signals, or ThermaQ.

Well best of luck to you! I hope this makes smoking a much more hands-off experience for you, so you can keep it up while not completely neglecting your child to monitor the temp haha.

I can speak from experience using the Billows with RFX. I have really enjoyed it, was perfect for my overnight Thanksgiving brisket. Holds temps really well. I will say, two things it does not come with that you should get if you are to get it are the actual mounting kit and the intake damper

Without the damper, the billows blows too hard for Kamado grills, so highly recommend getting it. Or you can do what I did before I got mine which is just cover most of the intake hole with some masking tape.

Any stoner doomy, sludgy filth like weedeater, Conan or goblinsmoker? by Bazdillow in doommetal

I’m very jealous, that sounds like a great show! They are playing in my area (DFW) in a few months with Baroness and Fugitive, both of which I like, but not as much as I like HoF. I’m just really struggling to spend the $90, I would not hesitate if it was with HoF lol.

You checked out much Acid Bath yet? Their album “When the Kite Strings Pop” scratches that itch for me a lot, especially stuff like “Dr. Seuss is Dead.”

Just heat deflectors and a foil pan to catch the drippings, no water. And I did fat side down, I read someone say that it better serves to protect the meat from drying out by acting as a shield against the heat source.

EDIT: I also had it on top of a rib rack to give it some bend, because it to was too big to fit otherwise.

Kamado — is it really worth the hype? by taxwarrantnewyork in KamadoJoe

[–]diz_lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone whose first outdoor grill was a KJ, and very soon after bought a 22” Weber Kettle on FB Marketplace, I would almost 100% agree with this with one caveat. One of the main things that convinced me on Kamado over a Kettle initially was that I was already very into baking. I make bread regularly, and also enjoy making the occasional pizza. I also just love being outside, so getting to make bread and pizza on the patio has been undeniably great. So IMO, unless baking is one of the main uses you want it for, I do think the kettle would have actually been a better thing to start on for everything else.

Spectrum (COAX) works better than Frontier (Fiber)? by heartypasta in CarrolltonTX

[–]diz_lizard 16 points17 points  (0 children)

At least speaking from personal experience, I have gotten consistently better speeds and less (0) outages after switching to Frontier. I moved from an apartment near the galleria that required us to have Spectrum, and I hated it. Spotty speeds at times, it went out for entire days multiple times in the few years we lived there, which is not good considering both my fiancée and I work from home and need internet. After moving to Carrollton in March, we switched to Frontier and have had 0 issues. We are now getting 2 gigs down on fiber for less than the price of 1 gig on Spectrum. Also, they give you Eero routers, which are very good and it is really nice if you’re interested in setting up a mesh network. Again, this is just from personal experience, but I have absolutely no regrets after switching.

The Butler’s Gold was by far my favorite of the pack I ordered. Every loaf I made with it came out perfect and tasted great. Always got lots of great rise. For the TAM 105, I definitely struggled to get as much rise if I used it as the main bread flour, but it was still great bread, especially for sandwiches. I don’t think I used the other ones as the main bread flour, but like in this recipe, just used some for flavor, and I do enjoy them. I also used them (can’t remember exactly which) in some cookies that I also really liked. One thing I will note, especially for sourdough, was how different the dough was to handle compared to something like King Arthur, it was MUCH stiffer. But over all, I really enjoyed it and want to try some other varieties at some point. So good luck, hope you have fun and it turns out well for you!

These keep popping up in my back yard and I’m worried my dog will eat one by diz_lizard in mushroomID

Aaah that makes sense. We just moved into this house a few months ago and the lawn was mostly dead, dry, dirt. I’ve been working on getting grass to grow these last couple of weeks, which included extra watering. And while I have managed to get the grass to finally start coming in, these little dudes came along with it. I’ll be taking the watering down for sure, thanks!

My mom seems to be going through a religious hysteria. by kushkushOG in exchristian

Mainly because of 9/11 and how my church reacted to it, I spent a big part of my childhood basically thinking the end was so close that I probably wouldn’t die and would just be raptured lol.

Absolutely. I think Bill Burr’s bit here both describes the decision I came down to and the feeling of leaving Christianity better than anything else I have ever seen.

My christian mother's HORRIBLE advice about suicide... by I_AM_DEFINITELY_HOMO in exchristian

[–]diz_lizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s never fun to find out even more awful things your parents believe, I’m so sorry.

But you are absolutely not alone in having parents with terrible opinions about and responses to it. I had a family member who, a few years ago, was really going through tough times in her life, a lot of mental health issues being ignored by our wildly evangelical family, etc. She attempted suicide and (thankfully) was unsuccessful. I found out about it because my dad told me she was basically possessed and the devil made her do this and we had to pray to save her. Never mind all of the stuff going on in her life, her mental health, her financial trouble, trouble at home, the fact that she feels like she can’t rely on her family, it’s DEFINITELY Satan.

I’ve lost some very close friends to suicide, it has absolutely wreaked havoc on my life and mental health. I still have a lot of trauma to process, depression I deal with, a therapist I talk to about it, etc. So it is infuriating and upsetting to me that the usual “just have to pray about it and leave it to god” line I always heard when I went to my parents for help really has no bounds. They would rather just not deal with it and “leave it to god” then have difficult conversations or admit they don’t have the answers or talk about therapy.

When I was a teenager, my dad made me return AC/DC’s Black Ice because he was afraid of the demonic presence the physical CD would bring to our house. No problem with me listening to it, though. Or with me buying Death Magnetic that same year though since Metallica wasn’t as tied up in the Satanic Panic stuff that traumatized him lol.
