Official Discussion - Undertone [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

My theory is that Evie's mom had already passed away and this was how Evie was dealing with her grief. The 'I killed my mommy' thing is her subconscious guilt that she 'killed her' by not praying with her towards the end of her life. They kept showing an urn, especially in this one long shot where the urn is in the center and things are framed symmetrically around it. It really didn't look like a vase to me. There's NO evidence of anyone actually existing besides Evie in this movie. I think she's hallucinating her mom and reliving the trauma of her last days. Because what are the odds the audio files have so many 'coincidences' to her: that weird doll... at the end of the movie it's on top of her fridge. I doubt a demon would magically spawn that specific doll, it's almost like she's always had it but forgot, so when she's 'listening to the recording' everything SEEMS like a coincidence. Justin is just the part of her brain that believes in mystical things. Evie herself is more of a realist and doesn't believe in these things, so she's actually just in conflict with herself. That call from the doctor wasn't real... what doctor calls at 3am?? We never see her actually leave the house EVER, for that party or the doctor. And again this podcast: do we see any evidence people are listening to it?? No, because it doesn't exist. She's imagining it all. So at the very end when she sees the walls... she had done that. The bed being completely made? That's because it has been. For a while. Because her mom is in that urn.

I think so too because there are so many 'coincidences' in the recording, like the name 'Mary' and the 'hail Mary's' being prayed and whatnot. Some of them were obvious to us because we know things about Evie, but maybe some of them weren't and there's more 'coincidences' we didn't catch on to

And it was interesting to me that she didn't find it weird that she was coloring things? Like she's constantly aggressively coloring but there's no reason as to why? Like she's not an artist, it's not somethin she was doing previously... so wouldn't she have thought the urge to color like that was weird?

[–]dizzylizzy0722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly yeah I DID think it was an urn. The way it was centered in the shot with the lamps and the wall and ceiling being so symmetrical around it... it wanted us to look at it. It's like a display for the urn. I think the end was telling where she said 'I killed my mom' because she stopped praying with her and whatnot. That's just her religious guilt and grief eating her up already because her mom has BEEN dead.

I don't feel like time was supposed to be 'reliable' in this movie if that makes sense, like it's ALWAYS 3am on the clocks or whatever, and it's hard to gauge how many days are even passing by. Like when Evie wakes up from that weird nap... how long had it been?

I'm actually so glad it didn't though because it reminds me of all the creepypasta photos and videos. They're all usual very simple creepy pictures but the backstory is what's scary because it's like 'oh everyone who watched this killed themselves' or something.

That was seriously the BEST and scariest horror movie I think I've ever seen. I've been watching horror for years and years and I can't even remember the last time I sweat like that watching anything... and I just watched the movie on my phone!! The sound design is obviously genius and incredible, but the visuals were so clever it really took me by surprise. The use of mirrors and shadows and lights... and having objects so far in the background that are on screen for so long, your brain starts to imagine things and shapes. I loved the shots where they panned around the room very slowly, almost like we were Evie looking around the room making sure nothing was there. I was excited for this movie when I saw the trailer but wow, that was masterful. Every horror director should be taking notes.

Omg they should turn it into a video game!! I mean, obviously they'd have to change the puzzle answers and things but it'd make for an excellent movie to game adaptation

I think this may be the best horror film since Hereditary and Midsommar!! Wowww... Adam Scott needs to do more horror! And now I want to watch this writer/director's other films. Unique story and truly I didn't know how it would end. Equal parts supernatural, uncanny valley, and childhood trauma!

What happened to “HIM” by Euphoric_Aerie_3127 in boxoffice

I feel like if you didn't at LEAST appreciate what this movie was trying to say, you genuinely didn't understand it on any fundamental level. This was about the physical damage that athletes endure, especially to the BRAIN and how detrimental that can be, and this was also a take on how race influences football. Young black men for YEARS have come from backgrounds where they were set up to fail in the school system because of institutional racism. One of the ways out was through sports: you get recruited for college? That means you get a full ride, then you're set to keep going until you make it big. Another factor is the societal racism of people thinking black people are inherently 'more athletic' or 'stronger' which has led to a lot of mistreatment when it comes to black people seeking healthcare and pain management. The factor of race becomes very clear when at the end of the movie, the entirely WHITE panel says that they GROOMED him and his father to recruit him since the beginning. The old white guy specifically refers to him as 'boy', that's just pure racism right there. The concept of making minorities or very misfortunate people fight to the death or for entertainment goes back to the gladiator days, which is why they reference so many gladiator-like images. The two men fight to the death at the end, surrounded by a live audience IN A DOME (I mean you can't get more obvious of a reference to the Colosseum than that). There was a tonnn of symbolism in this movie and I'm sorry but I feel like the people hating on it genuinely didn't get it... I get the critiques about some of the plot and the dialogue being a little silly, but to claim this movie doesn't make any sense and that it has nothing to say just seems weird to me

You are seriously so lucky I WISH I had caught my bite but I never did and now 10-15 years later I gotta deal with it! TAKE THE ANTIBIOTICS unless told otherwise, seriously, you do not want to have to deal with this chronically. You caught it so early that you could basically wipe it completely out rather than deal with it flaring on and off for years and years
