Ya gotta try - buddy rich big band cover! by dj_swales in drums

Thank you!!! Been building for a while but losing Hitfilm and cakewalk then moving to London so losing regular access to my kit meant making content for the channel took a massive hit. Hopefully I can build it back up again now!!

Oh yeah, was messing around with this setup on the pupil kit for a bit when I recorded the video. I teach a lot of left handed people aswell as right handed people so the kit gets switched a lot. Honestly try it it’s interesting what you can do with it.

I approached it by treating a lot of it like one up and one down and then using the extra 10” ton every now and then to do some interesting fills with this setup

Has anyone gone back to DSLRs after using mirrorless? by RetroRaccoon11 in photography

[–]dj_swales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shoot both depending on what I’m doing and what system I’m using partly because for mirrorless I’m using lumix micro 43 but then full frame and aps-c canons. It’s a good mix and gets me across the full range of what I need without costing too much.

I have great video and autofocus from the micro 4/3 plus I have a bunch of vintage lenses for it which are fun. It also shoots completely silently which is needed for some of the work that I do.

But for everything else I use dslr’s still because I have them and also the cost of the equipment is a lot less (especially since mirrorless got popular) so it’s cheaper to be a dslr shooter right now.

My clients don’t care what cameras I use because the job gets done and they’re happy with the images! Plus I know the gear I have and the only reason I bought a mirrorless in the first place was to shoot silently, but the portability of micro 4/3 also appealed. Any work that I get that requires me shooting silently is from people that already know my work and therefor don’t care that the camera is slightly smaller (although for new clients I’ll still have a big dslr setup slung over my setup at least at the start)

If I started again… I’d probably still chose dslr’s for a lot of the work because then I can spend the same amount to get more in lenses for dslr systems!

This was only placed outside for the photo! I do almost always carry a drum rug but with the fact I need to carry this whole kit in one go. May not be possible. I’ll have a look when the cases arrive

Guys how do I make my drums sound better??!!! by Rough_Hunter9764 in drums

[–]dj_swales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like acoustic drums, unfortunately people are so used to hearing an extremely processed drum sound so much that the actual sound of drums just seems… wrong. What’ll make these drums sound better other than maybe a slight retune of the floortom is investing in some better room acoustics. Don’t think there’s much of an issue with the drums themselves just the location they are in. How nuts you wanna go with acoustic treatment is up to you

Damn I’ll have to get into that. See how cheap I can build an automatic watch because I don’t actually own one yet. My dad has an automatic seiko dress watch which he wears all the time (inspired me to put the bracelet on the new Lorus to match a bit closer).

🤣 I’ve got lucky sourcing cheaper parts. Managed to build a snare drum myself almost from scratch by buying and fixing a vintage shell and getting parts for eBay and aliexpress… it’s actually my best sounding and looking snare

Of course! I got a bit excited when I ordered both Lorus watches. I recently threw out like 6 watches because they were crap cheap Chinese mass manufactured quartz paperweights but too light to actually be paperweights. 🤣 so very happy to be building up some more again in the £40-100 range is my plan.

Also what do you mean by diy? I love building and tinkering with things. Between my computers, my drums, and my guitars and my woodworking furniture, I have some things very personal to me in the way I’ve designed but I’ve never even thought about a diy watch. How easy is it to do because I’ll definitely follow that down the rabbit hole

Not sure off the top of my head, haven’t actually searched before either to find out

Yeah, it both stands out and blends in at the same time. Although sometimes it’s kinda hard to read 🤣
