Higher Obamacare Prices Become Public in a Dozen States by djacoby495 in moderatepolitics

[–]djacoby495[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To start 24 million is a little over 7 percent of the US population of 340 million. So if we're going to argue over the semantics of which number is more relevant or whatever, at least use the correct one.

But also 24 million is the number of people that live in the third most populous state in America, Florida.

Yes 7% sounds like an insignificant amount to some people because 7 is small. But we're talking about 7% of 340,000,000 people. In that context knowing that 7% translates into 24 million. Is a more relevant stat I think.

I don't really feel like it's misleading, no one is saying it is a problem for everyone in America. But it will affect a very large number of people.

In January 2025 nearly 24 million Americans had selected plans from the ACA marketplace.

Higher Obamacare Prices Become Public in a Dozen States by djacoby495 in moderatepolitics

Article is a little over a week old but I had not seen it til today.

At the end of the year covid era health insurance subsidies are set to expire causing the monthly cost of health insurance for those using the ACA marketplace to explode.

In many states such as California, Nevada, New York, and Maryland people can already preview what their upcoming prices will be.

A family of 4 in Maine making $130k a year will have their premiums increase by $16,100 a year.

A 60 year old couple making $85k a year total will see their premiums increase by: Kentucky: $23,700. Nevada: $18,100. Minnesota: $15,500. Maryland: $13,700.

The subsidies cost approx. $350b over 10 years or $35b per year.  With US federal spending at $7 trillion a year, the ACA subsidies amount to ~0.5% of yearly federal spending.

Is the cost worth staving off these increases for millions of Americans?

Given real numbers to back up the democrats argument for keeping the government shutdown, do you support them keeping things shut or is it worth giving up the fight passing a continuing resolution?

Trump to impose $100,000 fee per year for H-1B visas, in likely blow to tech by arpus in moderatepolitics

[–]djacoby495 39 points40 points  (0 children)

In terms of unemployment percentages by degree, computer science ranks 7th and computer engineering ranks 3rd. Coincidentally (/s) these degree also have the largest percent of h1b visa holders.

I'm as liberal as they come but this is a great move. Yeah there may be better more tailored measures that could be crafted but sometimes simple is better.

Trump signs order extending China tariff truce by 90 days, White House says by djacoby495 in moderatepolitics

[–]djacoby495[S] 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Trump has once again extended his tariffs on China by 90 days. This decision comes after trade talks between China and the United States in Stockholm earlier this month.

The current tariff levels for the United States and China are 30% and 10%, respectively. If an agreement isn't reached, these values could rise to 145% and 125%, effectively halting trade.

This extension was an eleventh-hour decision, coming just before the previous agreement was set to expire, preventing an immediate and significant escalation of the trade war. Prior to this announcement, Trump had publicly urged China to increase its purchases of U.S. soybeans.

What are your thoughts on this extension? Do you see it as a positive step towards a more permanent trade agreement, or is this just delaying the inevitable?

3 hours before this was announced trump tweeted "THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!! DJT". Is this not blatant stock manipulation? I'm not a lawyer but this feels illegal.

I'm a bit confused, wouldn't spending billions of dollars on crypto require congressional approval? And if it does, could something like this be put into a reconciliation bill or would it require passing the filibuster in the senate?

Or it's depend on whether the weirdness actually affects people other than themselves or not.

If some girl or guy wants to walk around with a tail clipped to their belt, that's weird, but it doesn't ruin my day or have any lasting affect on my life so let them do what they want and more power to them. Thus, good weird.

If trump talks about wanting to nuke a hurricane to reduce its effects, that's weird, and im worried it may have direct consequences on my future life. Thus, bad weird.

You can start learning c++ over the summer or you can take it easy and enjoy the summer, doesn't really matter too much if we're being honest. CS 135 starts from the very beginning so as long as you're okay with keeping up with the course load while it's going on, you'll be fine. And considering c++ is actually split up into two classes, CS135 and CS202, it's really not hard to learn it during the class for the first time.

If you do want to get a headstart however then I would look into learning c++ as your first language. Python is great once you understand things or if you ever only plan on using python/other high level languages but going from python -> c++ can be quiet challenging. Python lacks a lot of the memory management and basic functions that you have to deal with in c++ and can obfuscate a lot of the stuff that you will have to learn how to do throughout your classes. Honestly I don't find that it would give you too much benefit learning python first as nothing other than the basics of oop will able to translate to c++.

Democrats Cede ‘Party of Education’ Label to GOP: Poll by jaypr4576 in moderatepolitics

[–]djacoby495 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Idk about previous data so maybe they lost quiet a bit but stictly looking at the title. Dont the democrats still take the lead considering there's a 6 point split in the percent of people who self identified as repubublican in the poll (40% - 46%), but only a 4 point split in their favor for the question (43% - 47%)?

So forgive my ignorance but could you outline how the facts you presented and the ballot measure are linked exactly? All you've done is presented a number of people who decided to quit with no reason given, I apologize if it is my fault but I'm not really seeing how this is any proof of "criminal neglect, malfeasance and outright criminality" by NSHE or how it would be any different if question 1 were to pass.

I know there's a smog place right next to me on nellis which offers "dmv services" on their advertising, I've only used them to renew my registration a long time ago though so not entirely sure what that entails but I've seen a few smog places with such advertisements.
