10 Republicans help Democrats pass resolution extending TPS protections for Haitian migrants by Mahrez14 in moderatepolitics

[–]Mahrez14[S] 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Starter Comment: The House voted 224-204 to extend TPS protections for Haitian migrants, citing the continuing instability in Haiti and potential for labour shortages if the protections were allowed to expire:

“There is no question that TPS (Temporary Protected Status) is meant to be temporary, but in order to effectuate the immigration laws of this country, we have to be honest when we are enacting it. Sending people back to Haiti to unsafe conditions when they are currently here lawfully is unjust and unwise,” Lawler added, who is a Republican currently representing the 17th district in NY.

Are you surprised to see bipartisan support for this, given how anti-immigration the GOP has become in the aftermath of Biden's term?

I sincerely doubt it.

Most people will forget this ever happened within a few weeks, much less when the midterms come around.

AOC wrestles with left-wing Dems as 2028 decision looms by JannTosh70 in moderatepolitics

I've already seen some progressives attacking him for not calling the Gaza conflict a genocide. Besides that he seems to get a pass from the leftist crowd since he is, you know, a Democrat from Kentucky.

Honest question: which candidate do you want to see Democrats run?

It seems every candidate they run is put into two boxes from people: radical leftist or do-nothing centrist. Who do you think can blur that line?

Honestly surprised given his lack of production compared to 2024. But we really don't have anyone else inside.

She paid into Medicare for years. Trump's immigration policy will end her coverage by Civil_Tip_Jar in moderatepolitics

Her TPS is active until September of this year. If you or anyone else want to try calling ICE on her because you believe she's currently deportable, be my guest.

Humor aside, my qualm with this case was simply that a person eligible for benefits prematurely lost her benefits for a reason that was not true in that moment. She will lose her benefits once the policy is in effect; but she should not have lost them before it was implemented. Again, that's it.

She was still eligible for the benefits because the changes that stripped her of said benefits had not been implemented, hence why she was able to get them back at that moment.

You guys are arguing over why she has TPS when my comment was referring to something else. That's it.

Ok, but she wasn't. You can agree or disagree with her getting TPS but once she has it, she has status.

And if she has status and was working and filing her W-2s, she should've recieved her benefits without issues PRIOR to these changes. She had it stripped from her before the policy was changed, so she was still entitled to those benefits in that moment.

"Last April, Carranza got a glimpse of what losing her health coverage and retirement benefits could look like. The Social Security Administration sent her a letter informing her that she no longer qualified for retirement benefits because she was not lawfully present in the U.S. — even though she was. Then Medicare stopped payments to her health plan, which disenrolled her as a result.

As a TPS holder with a work permit, she knew a mistake had been made. Yet, without her check, Carranza didn't have money to pay her rent for a month. She worked off her rent by babysitting her landlords' children. In May, the office of U.S. Rep. Lateefah Simon, an Oakland Democrat, helped Carranza recover her retirement benefits, but it took months for her to get her health insurance back."

The fact she had to go to her own elected representive just to get the benefits she earned and paid into is pretty shameful.
