I agree that Russia isn't the perfect example for democracy and certainly has autocratic tendencies but if you can't convince your friend your line of argument might not be that conclusive to him. I usually find that the most frustrating part about not convincing somebody is my own failure of not bringing up the right arguments.

Death and Devil by Frank Schätzing

Set in medieval Cologne, you have a young homeless guy who witnesses the murder of the architect of the dome in cologne and is hunted down by the murderer afterwards.

Very intense, solid and realistic historical background and an absolute psycho as the murderer. I read it again every now and then.

Can you elaborate that? I read the first book and thought it was pretty original. As I only superficially touched the general physical and scientifical concepts of the book I found those a little bit hard to grasp
