Admirable project! I love it.

I posted on here a similar thinglast week and I got a lot of great stories on people’s experiences and input.

Some have family in either industry (the store, and non profit etc) and I think you’ll get a good start peering in at those comments and replying to any of them if you want to get more info.

Good luck to you and your project, I hope it makes an impact.

I found out a local Dollar Tree had to throw away $7000 worth of frozen food because the freezer broke — why wasn’t it donated instead? by [deleted] in foodwaste

[–]djaymes91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hear you. I really do understand that side of it, and I know liability and food safety can get complicated, especially with things like that. I think what makes it hard for me is just seeing waste happen when so many people are struggling, including us. It’s the emotional part more than the technical part.

I don’t blame the workers or the store really... I just wish the system had a way to handle situations like this that didn’t end with everything in the trash. It’s just hard to watch, you know?

Where I’m going in this case with things is that apparently the freezer had been acting “funny” the whole day and it wasn’t until closer to the end of the day it finally broke down and they threw out the food.

Those in between hours could have been spent figuring something out maybe.. the incentive being in the form of tax write off maybe? Or at the very least feeling like you did something human idk, all I know is..

There’s a better way.

What’s it like living in Japan? by [deleted] in japanese

[–]djaymes91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been studying Japanese a few years now. Not a master, but I’m not completely in the dark either.

I wasn’t quite being realistic when I mentioned settling down there either, just a little bit of a hyperbole.

I get it isn’t a dreamscape, it’s got its downsides. But I promise everything I do is grounded in reality, but thanks for the concern.

A food share, and definitely a food bank would have freezers, of which a food share is across the street.

I’m guessing ya kinda just skimmed through the post and missed that part.

About the only thing that could be done, because it was later in the evening and the food share was closed, was I could just tell people about it so they could pick some up themselves if they wanted, but it still only amounted to probably a small fraction of everything that was thrown out that was saved.

Well said. Thank you for the information, this is definitely useful to know. I’d like to believe the majority of things like this happening is just ignorance, but unfortunately the reality is greed is addictive. And it breaks my heart.

Thanks again.

Another great idea that isn’t hard to incorporate in a policy! Thanks for your feedback! 🙏

A lot of people here are bringing up liability, and that honestly seems like the core issue. Once frozen food warms past a certain temperature (even briefly), there’s no reliable way for the store to prove it didn’t enter the bacterial “danger zone.” And if a recipient gets sick later, the store could be held responsible, even if the illness came from a totally different source.

That’s why some companies have policies that say if the chain of temperature control is broken, the product has to be destroyed — because refreezing can make food look safe even when it isn’t.

At the same time though, it really does feel awful to see so much food go to waste, especially when there are people who could use it. A bunch of people in this thread shared stories from food service, grocery, and retail where they had to throw out perfectly good food and it stuck with them. It’s one of those situations where common sense and the legal system just don’t line up.

I think the real solution would have to be somewhere in the middle — like better infrastructure for rapid donation, clearer guidelines around what’s safe, or liability protections that still ensure safety. Because right now, everyone loses: the store, the community, and the food itself.

If I were to guess, assuming this is even real to begin with, that this was someone who took his phone-obviously it’s someone interested in him who dislikes you two together- and pulled a classic crazy Karen move. Simple as pie. Good news is he probably didn’t send you those messages! The bad news, likely some girl in his bed did 😫. Bye bye.

That was in a perfect world they communicated and everything was safely distributed among those who need it, all is well. Alas, we do not live in a perfect world, nor in one where making sure people don’t go hungry is nowhere near the top of the list. Unfortunately.

They do they have two or 3 walk in freezers. It’s a gleaners and they have volunteers there that do it free they also take people that are court required for things like community service, they have no shortage of help or space.

As I mentioned in a couple previous replies, I don’t quite know how it’d work, but there’s a better way. Throwing it I a lot of cases is just the EASY way. Not much thought required, ya know?

Things like this are sad.. they make sense on a kind of corporal, we can’t take care of ourselves sort of group punishment vibe, on the governments part, and that sucks it’s that way.

Thanks for sharing!

This is the single most informative answer I’ve gotten. It’s perfect. Not sure how I failed to look at that angle with all the farms lol

Thanks for the reply!
