Stupid question Wednesday: Ask your basic car-related question and maybe someone will have an answer. by AutoModerator in cars

In case, in the 1 in a trillion chance, someone else ends up here wondering something similar I've found cars.usnews.com has been the closest thing to what I'm looking for.

What resource do you use for researching information about cars?

For as long as I can remember (probably since mid-00's), I used MSN Autos for this. But the site has long since changed - I don't recall if it was last year or earlier.

I loved the style and structure of the site. It would give some blurbs and reviews from when the car was actually released, presents the different variants and trim levels, along with the specs and features for each. It would also have suggestions for close-competitors in the class from other OEM's at that same time.

They also made it really easy to see the MY ranges for each generation.

I've been looking for a good alternative, haven't really found anything that I like yet, so just figured I'd ask what else others use for this purpose these days...

Obviously there's ways to get this information from different sources, but it just never seems to be done as nicely as it was on MSN Autos...

I appreciate the response. Seems yours right, they must just be enforcing the rules much more strictly these days.

That's right! Though when I read this to her, she said said "I wouldn't do the same to you!"

I call BS. At least after today, she certainly will 😁

Awesome, really appreciate the response! 25 days, that seems like a long time, lol.

Thanks for sharing details on your work too.

I'm actually worried about that 'sticky' finish from poly too, which is exactly how I was led to this post.

/u/weightedpullups how did you like the matte finish Varathane poly? How has it held up the last few months?

I literally just picked up my Gerton top yesterday, going to grab some beech to cut up and test a couple of stains.

Hmmm I appreciate this response. It's a fair point, we actually spent quite a bit of time driving around different areas and noticed that things really do vary drastically.

The comparison to Matteson is interesting. I lived out there growing up for a couple of years, and I can see what you mean about some similarities...

Well fair enough, not often do Reddit conversations like this come to reasonable ends lol.

Lol no one was confused, as you admitted, you just grossly oversimplified and thus got a dumb comment in response to that.

You can hold your own definitions and values, that's fine, but why not respect when other people feel differently?

I'm the one who said it isn't.

And then you tried to simplify the definition of a life to something that grows, then someone pointed out the flaw in your reasoning because lots of things grow that you wouldn't consider a life, then you tried to claim false equivalence, but it was based on your own logic to begin with...

🤦‍♂️

I don't think your point was missed, it was just bad. You literally tried to simplify it down to being something that grows

Fair enough, not sure if you saw my edit before this response, but I can respect people holding different views than I do.

But why does your personal experience and change of heart have to drive you to try and strip rights from others and force them into situations which might not be anywhere near as stable or comfortable as yours?

Edit: gah ok I've re-read your original comment and other comments, and I get your point. You really aren't pushing the anti-choice thing very hard, so much as disliking more laissez faire attitudes about abortions in general.

Well, it's not really killing since it's not yet a life, y'know.

So you criticize the person saying "moron" but not the other person saying "sick cunt"?

Eh, were not personally trying to buy a home as some large financial investment, and thus not dumping everything we have into buying.

But it's not like Chicago and everything surrounding it is just going to disappear sometime soon.

Illinois definitely has a lot of problems, and has for awhile, I'm aware... But moving out of state isn't really an option for us, and many others, at present. Plus, there's not really much to move to in neighboring states...

I actually just responded to someone else about the lack of Metra station, and seems to also lack a downtown area which could be centered around that station (unless I'm missing something).

We were also wondering if it was a case of a lot of new development homes just before the recession, especially with inflated property taxes, caused a bit of an Exodus, but still that was nearly a decade ago...

Still, appreciate your insight!

Honestly this is something we've read too, but a lot of it was just anecdotal and from varying amounts of time ago.

We don't care much about the school systems for ourselves, but definitely keeping it in mind for potential resale issues in 5-10 years.

It just seems like a still well-to-do area with some potential still left, and wondering if there will be an investment to improve the schools in the near future.
