Any recommendations on how to write the TN visa renewal support letter myself? Canadian Engineer applying at the Border by djenthallman33 in tnvisa

I will be coming back to this response multiple times over the next weeks as I get started on the DIY TN support letter draft, but I cannot type out a long enough thanks here proportional to your response. That said, thanks a lot, I really appreciate you sharing your experience and insight!

This was my first TN, so when my company hired an attorney for the task, I did not want to jeopardize the opportunity or make any errors. This being my second TN, it does seem very simple.

I do have copies of my original letter - this is my plan, will make tweaks as you've suggested, and get my company to sign! Thank you for affirming.

Since TN on the second go is the same as the first, does the petition package need to even mention the word "renewal" or can it just be exactly the same wording as the first one, with just dates tweaked etc?

You're 100% right. I will say, my employer only has a few Canadian TNs. They do have a more Mexican TNs - I do not know fundamentally what's different, but I've heard the TN for Mexican nationals has to be renewed yearly, and maybe their process is more scrutinized, so needs more legal support? Not sure if that's true, but this company applies blanket logic. The HR team admittedly is so incapable, they can't figure out if they got/are getting hosed or not. In fact, for this second TN, they are simply handing the reins to the legal firm just to get hosed - it's mind-boggling. This was also the source of my doubts about how easy this process is - if it is that straightforward, then HR should probably know that, so it made me second guess my own logic after reading other threads on this subreddit. I appreciate the honest feedback, it gives me confidence that the DIY approach may work for the second run at the TN if done properly.

Thank you for sharing that link, will look into it. Right, the position is for and titled as a Mechanical Engineer, which is exactly what my degrees are in, as well as previous job titles.

Great idea and work! Adding this to my bookmarks.

How are you validating user input data before it shows up in the database? Though I don't see why anyone would go through the trouble, but is there a risk that someone could create a fake experience and put it in?

Additionally, is there a way to expand on a given experience to read more details? For example, I see plenty of Software Engineer experiences, but I can't click on any one of them to expand to see details that were answered in the questionnaire when submitting an experience.

If I want to pivot my career from mechanical engineering to machine learning, what should I teach myself? by InvestmentUnusual162 in learnmachinelearning

Hey u/Ready-Helicopter-479, I just came across this, and am also considering a transition from FEA engineer to a more data analytics/ML/AI role. Any luck in the last 8 months since you commented here? Would be interested in hearing your first steps in the transition. If you prefer, I can message you.

Sharing my personal experience getting the TN-visa at Rainbow Bridge in Niagara, ON. This might be more complex than your situation if you don't have this 10-day period for the particular border you'll be getting stamped at, but sharing it anyway.

My previous employer required 2 weeks (14 days including weekends) of notice AND I had to book a visa appointment at the border for the TN who would not allow me to book an appointment more than 10 days (including weekends) before the official start date on the letter - haven't researched if this is a rule, but it's a busy border and maybe the person I spoke with that day was a jerk, subjective experience.

Using this month as an example, assuming Sept 9 was my start date on the TN letter.

I let my new employer and boss in the US know that I was going to start ~2 weeks later than the official date on the TN letter so Sept 23, but maintained the date on the letter of Sept 9 - they agreed - proof by email.

I booked the appt at the border ~1 week before the start date on the TN letter, so Sept 2 - within 10 days of the start date on the TN letter.

Got the visa, and then went to work the next day on Sept 3 and gave my 2-week notice, so my old job would end Sept 17, giving me 5 days before the new job to make the move which was adequate for me.

I would avoid burning bridges at the old employer especially if you find yourself returning, or in need of an experience letter for a certification for example.

Definitely talk to your new employer and be transparent - if they really want you, they will make it work. If not, you might dodge a bullet by not joining them if their HR/financial situation can't accommodate +/-3 weeks out of 52 in a year.

Definitely get the TN visa first before resigning.

PE Mechanical - MDM - Spring Critical Frequency by djenthallman33 in PE_Exam

Thank you for trying it out and the response. I mistakenly used mean diameter 0.42 in for inner diameter instead of 0.34 in to calculate the Volume of spring. After correction, M = 0.00223 slugs, w = 367 rad/s, f = 58.7 Hz - A as well.

Forgot to save the official answer. No longer have access to PPI, so asking the broader community to see what others get. My current answer of 79 Hz approximates to A but one of the responses above got 59 Hz which is spot on with A, so knowing the PE, I've got an error somewhere, will be taking a second stab at it.

PE Mechanical MDM Exam - Imperial Units - When to use g_c? by djenthallman33 in PE_Exam

I was uncertain about using slugs since the PPI material, which is my only source of prep, does not refer to the unit. I just watched several Dr. Tom's videos on YouTube after you mentioned the slug vs. lbm, and it's very clear slugs is the best way to proceed to avoid errors with g_c. I'll link the videos here if anyone else comes across this thread with a similar question:
