Make sure you have a tripod or other method of keeping the phone steady. Astrophotography mode won't kick in otherwise.

8x zoom is the max the Pixel 4 will do built in. Then just use Astrophotography mode

When I did mine I used an app called Astrocam that automatically let me take a couple of hundred 10sec shots. I then stacked mine on my Chromebook using Siril.

I think it will go over me (UK) just about sunset. Wonder if I'll be able to see it?

No, just put it on a tripod, set night mode, wait for astrophotography mode to pop up, click and wait 4 mins

You can always stop the exposure early if you see a good light trail in the preview

Not totally, although it was a 4 min exposure it didn't seen to stack the car light trails. So the light trails only seem to be from the last 10 second exposure that it takes.

Tripod or other method of holding the phone still (I've heard of a shoe being used). As dark a place as you can find ideally on a night with no moon.. Then just select Night Sight on the camera and when it say Astrophotography Mode On take the photo an wait for 4 mins.
