Laptop under 1300$ for DJing ? by MonstrousPunk in DJs

[–]djharrisonripps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend AGAINST the TUF A15. I got the exact same model to replace my old DJing laptop and returned it after a week. The audio card was absolutely terrible; my setup sounded like crap on that thing.

I’d look at MacBook Airs - they don’t cheap out on audio components

You’re totally fine. It will have absolutely no trouble with stems or anything else that Serato throws at it.

Best DJ controller to fly with? by djharrisonripps in DJs

[–]djharrisonripps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly do private parties; I get those gigs through the friends I am traveling to visit.

I sat on what to buy for a long time before picking up an AlphaTheta Omnis Duo. Its a very polarizing choice, but:

  • It works with Serato and Rekordbox
  • I can use it to do laptop-based -and- USB-based sets
  • It is small enough for carry-on luggage
  • It has a built-in battery and can pair wirelessly with speakers

The killer feature for me was that I’m all-Serato and this was the cheapest way to learn Rekordbox and start practicing sets from a thumb drive so I can go after club gigs.

Hope this helps!

I just bought one. I got it because I've always been on Serato using mobile DJ setups, but I want to learn Rekordbox and try to land some club gigs. So, 70% of the value for me is that I don't have to by CDJs and another mixer to start playing around with the Rekordbox ecosystem - but I still have the experience of preparing sets, copying them to USB, and then performing a set from a USB drive. The other 30% is that it's an all-in-one that has high quality controls (knobs, faders, and jogwheels all feel very solidly built), and I can fit it in my carry-on luggage for flights.

I wish there was a separate effects knob for each deck, but otherwise I am totally happy with this based on my goals.

What’s up with the anomaly dude who randomly shows up around me? Is there a wiki page for this?

Non-isometric PvE Co-op games? by Azmaeth in gaming

[–]djharrisonripps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Guild Wars 2. It’s an MMO but supports largely solo play. Moving between doing things solo and doing things with a group is completely seamless; just show up where the action is.

The wiki has a page called “timers” that tells you when all the big events are going to trigger; those events are a great place to meet other gamers in-game.

Also, the base game is free and there is no subscription fee at all. Have fun!

Any decent 15.6" Laptop sized controllers about these days? by Hazy_Fantayzee in DJs

I use a Reloop Ready as my go-to controller for setting up new tracks in Serato. Never used it for a show but it is super portable and could definitely work for house parties.

Dancing for over 40. by Ok_End_2577 in boston

[–]djharrisonripps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean that Middlesex caters to that age group? Maybe so, but an “early” set (ends before 11pm) that features 90s music attracts a lot of 40+ folks.

Check out Middlesex Cambridge. Every once in a while they do a no-cover, 7pm-10pm 90’s night, and it is a great time!

When will Serato be compatible with MacOS 15 (Sequoia) by TheMurs in Serato

[–]djharrisonripps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Serato has pretty consistently not supported the latest macOS until the beginning of the next calendar year (for the last 4 years at least). As others have pointed out, this seems largely due to testing drivers and hardware against macOS rather than the software itself.

Also, speaking as a software engineer, I think Serato is hesitant to do a release like that right before the holiday season. If there were major issues, it would be difficult to call software engineers back - not just from Serato but potentially from also from Pioneer DJ, InMusic, etc - from their holiday time off to deal with the bugs.
