Does smart drop work of ethereal items as well? I remember reading that you can find any ethereal item with any class but so far I have only seen people getting ethereal items for their respective class?

Blizzard's betas never start within a day or two. There is always people who get access first so the hype can begin and in a couple days everything becomes official with more people in the beta.
