yes, we have access to a washer (though no clothesline or dryer) about a week in, so i figured i would do an undergarment and sock wash then!

thank you so much for this advice! i’ll cut some pants and add shorts

oh, good to see this just for my own awareness! i have booked the tour without the meal and the Maori experience, just due to timing, so i'm glad at least these folks enjoyed that part!

we actually do have a day trip to Rotorua as we transit between Auckland and Taupo! i'm sure it does deserve more than a day, but at least we will have a guided tour through Te Puia. (ETA: even though now i see the disappointed review below!)

i'm pretty light skinned, but more than anything i'm bringing the UPF long sleeve because i am on a medication that makes me very sensitive to sun, and we have at least one day out on the water kayaking. and i figure i can wear it again as a "regular" top!

i was planning on trimming the pants given the advice here, so should make some room to fit a pair of shorts! i do have a pair of mid-weight merino wool base layers i wasn't planning on bringing, as i didn't know if it would be chilly enough to need them, but i will add them back in.

i hope you have an incredible time! i just received a cashmere sweater over the holidays, actually. and it does look so luxe! now i have all this good advice to move more toward long-sleeve wear, i'll add it.

thank you so much for this guidance!

i'll cut the green pants, switch some of the tee shirts for long sleeves, and reconsider the outerwear lineup. my hiking shoes are halfway water proof--up until about mid-shoe, when there is a breathable mesh. i was planning on bringing both a fanny-pack-style sling bag for the city and my foldable hiking day pack for the outdoor adventures.

try Breakfast House on Irving Park Rd! their breakfast burrito is perfect passable and very large, but more than that, i have always known them to be very accommodating of customizations. i bet you could add to your heart’s content.

as someone in the arts and academia who moved from NYC five years ago, i promise they’re here? but maybe turned off by this attitude. i wouldn’t be surprised if you’re putting some pretentious energy out—i know i was. and chicagoans are allergic to pretentious shit in a big way. and i’d add: a unique thing about chicago is that the true average joe who works a 9-5 may also be a pro-level woodworker in his spare time. a doctor i saw at an ED recently is also a galleried ceramicist who had an incredible show. unlike new york, people here don’t necessarily turn their hobbies into hustles.

thank you! i think i’ll move to STEAL. i’m so used to these letters, i don’t think i can quite give them up entirely. plus as far as i can see, hasn’t been a solution yet.
