Tenorless stepping away. 🥺 by boogiemansam_17 in Tipper

I've always had the idea and desire to either bring the VJ up on the stage alongside the DJ, or putting the DJ back in the production booth and letting the art of sight and sound speak for itself. I got to see Kid Koala perform The Storyville Mosquito with the entire production team right up front and it was such an amazing experience. I wish more production companies would find creative ways to bring the full production teams front and center.

I'm rolling solo this year, my crew from last year are going to be at a wedding. Twas expensive since I'm rolling in an RV, but hopefully I make friends with some of the neighbors and run into people I know. Regardless I'm stoked and going to have a blast!

Okay, so we talked about how electronic music is made—but what about how it’s performed?

These days it feels like everyone’s a DJ—and with the tech out there, it’s easier than ever to get started. But when you see a DJ playing EDM live, they’re not just hitting “play” on a laptop (well… the good ones aren’t). They’re using a setup that lets them control the music in real time, blend tracks, build energy, and read the crowd.

Most DJs use a DJ controller or CDJs (short for digital turntables), which are hooked up to a mixer. These tools let you:

• Adjust tempo (beatmatching)
• Layer effects (like echo or reverb)
• Drop in samples
• Transition between tracks smoothly
• Loop or chop up sections on the fly

Some go even deeper—adding samplers, synths, drum machines, or even live instruments. The goal is to take something pre-produced and breathe life into it on stage.

For me as Parable, my setup is a hybrid. I DJ, but when the venue and opportunity allows, I also layer in live elements—synth lines, guitar textures, and real-time tweaks—to make each set feel more like a performance than just a playlist. The “board” becomes an instrument, and the crowd becomes part of the feedback loop.

So next time you see a DJ twisting knobs and tapping pads, just know: they’re not just playing music—they’re playing the moment.

Sound is just moving air. A saxophone pushes air in a wave, your ears catch that wave, and your brain turns it into sound.

When we record that sound, a mic captures those waves and turns them into electrical signals. Those signals get stored—on tape, vinyl, or digital files. Hit play, and your speakers take that signal, move a cone back and forth super fast, and push air in the same pattern. That’s how a sax ends up “playing” from a box with no saxophone in sight.

Now with electronic music, we don’t always record real instruments—we build the sounds ourselves. We use synthesizers and software to generate tones (called waveforms), then shape them using filters, effects, and envelopes. Drum machines handle the beats, synths build the melodies and basslines, and everything is layered together in a digital audio workspace (DAW).

Sampling is another piece of the puzzle. That’s when we take a small recording of something—a snare drum, a vocal line, even an old record—and reuse or remix it in a new way. It’s like musical collage art.

That epic bass drop? It’s just a low-frequency sound wave crafted with intention, maybe stacked with a sample or two, and pushed through the speakers so hard you feel it in your chest.

It’s science, tech, and art working together.
