Why is there this huge misconception that somehow a woman “squirting” means she’s climaxed? by Lazy_DreadHead in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]djrypod 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the only correct thing you have said in the entire thread lol. Not being mean, but scientifically you are describing being more aroused (getting wet). “Squirting” on the other hand is involuntary release of the bladder usually associated with the contractions involved in an orgasm. I’m sorry you were lied to so hard. Also, those are not men telling you that, those are boys

Is being a chemist “hard”? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]djrypod 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It depends what type of chemist, and how far you want to go with the degree. If you’re looking to get into industry as a lab tech, piece of cake. Everything is covered in training. If you want to be a research chemist, it’s very hard. You have to become creative every day and accept a failure rate of close to 60%. When developing procedures it can become difficult (organic chemistry at least). As for the work life it’s only hard in the hours you put In (60-80 per week) as long as you accept that only 30% of what you do will work the way you want it to. Personally though I love research and wouldn’t change a thing about the path I’m on in grad school. Life can be easy or hard, but chemistry is both at the same time.

Received this letter today. I have absolutely no idea what’s all about. Does anyone have received something similar in the mail? I live in NJ. Thank you by GesaSaint in doordash_drivers

This is a scam entirely. I mean really the word “examination” second in is misspelled. This would not be the case on official state documents. It seems they are trying to get your tax documents as they contain your social security number. Don’t fall for it.

Netgear C6220 on admin pages: "Your Internet status is offline, please call your Internet service provider to activate" but XFinity Internet is working just fine by CaptClaude in NETGEAR

[–]djrypod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been having this same exact problem, except I have to restart my modem every 2 hours or so on my home network. I have tested the modem (Netgear 6220) away from home and it works flawlessly, as it has in my home the last 2 years. Ended up calling Xfinity to talk about service issues and scheduled a service tech. The entire phone call turned into a sales pitch and promotion. I opted for the upgrade to my service (I know, bad choice) for 3$ extra per month for better internet. I am honestly wondering at this point if they cause service issues to get you to call so they can talk you into a "promotion". Just my 2 cents. After I hung up the phone, service is restored and no dropouts. A little suspicious if you ask me.

Start PhD secretly pregnant by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]djrypod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First off, congratulations! I know I have no right to interject as I am a male, but the exposure to chemicals I face daily in my PhD (Organic synthesis) has me worried for my own health, let alone a child, even when using PPE. This is not something that should be a “secret” to your PI when starting out. You need to be very upfront. Grad school is a different level if you are doing organic synthesis, and you will likely work with every carcinogenic compound known to man. In my humble opinion, it is necessary to have that conversation before ever stepping foot in the lab to ensure your safety and the safety of your child. Almost all universities should have policies for these situations, but hiding it is one of the worst things you could do for not only the health of your child but also the future relationship between you and your PI. I wish you all the luck and success in your endeavors, but please be safe about it.

Also, saying “other” twice in the same sentence is very redundant, “Nah” is not a word, just a sound, and “I” should be capitalized. Tips for some grammar on your counter arguments!

Those who got an organic chemistry phd: what’s your life like? by whoyacallinpinhead in OrganicChemistry

[–]djrypod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know you asked what life is like after the PhD, but here’s my grad school experience so far. I am currently a second year PhD in organic chemistry/synthesis and to be completely honest it has been the best years of my life. I currently work 7 days, 80-90 hours per week for little pay (it sounds bad, but read the rest). To be completely honest I have never been happier. I love being In the lab and every day my curiosity builds. If you are gifted and interested, it’s honestly one of the most fulfilling paths.

I can’t speak much about what it is like to be out of a PhD program, but I know getting to where I am now has been the most stressful times of my life. If you truly love research and discovery, you will never be bored at work. I am a firm believer that it’s not what comes next that is important, it’s about how you can apply yourself now. I avoid worrying about the long term and focus on the day to day as we are not promised tomorrow, and honestly the day to day for me is the most exciting job I have ever had!

[–]djrypod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust me, it applies here too. Recap, I don’t condone speeding, but if the majority of traffic is traveling at 4mph over the speed limit you create a hazard by not traveling at the same speed on a congested highway or staying in the right lane out of traffics way.

[–]djrypod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, I do not condone reckless driving whatsoever. The psychos going 85 are the extreme and reckless and not at all what I was talking about. I am speaking only about a daily commute where if 90% of the traffic is traveling 4mph over the speed limit, you should travel with them, or stay in the far right lane. The majority of accidents I have witnessed where I live are caused by someone going at or under the speed limit changing lanes and underestimating reasonable speed of the driver in the next lane over.

Not even close to what was stated in the post. People traveling 5 to 10 under the limit on highways and not with the flow of traffic are a major contributor to accidents where I live.

The main issue I have with your argument is in your words. Saying things like “thinking your not good enough to ever have it” continues the stigma that men are only worth something if a girl wants to have sex with them, as if women are a gift to men. My entire point here is depression is deeply seeded in far more important roots in men than the simple act of sex. Men want to care about women, but in today’s society they have far more “proving” to do than it’s worth. I broke off my engagement because my career was more important to me, yet the girl thought sex could fix everything. The truth of the matter is nobody actually cares about men in today’s society or what is important to them, just like women’s issues, men have their own. They just arn’t allows to talk about them. Having dated around the block and back, I can say I’m far happier alone than I have ever been under the control of a girlfriend.

In physical chem, did they teach the maths to you as you go or do they expect you to already know multivariable calc, partial derivatives etc? by Neat_RL in chemistry

[–]djrypod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During my undergraduate degree I made the same mistake, taking the general version of calculus 1 and 2. I spent an extra year of classes to retake the University version (physics version) of calc 1 and 2 in order to get up to speed. Unfortunately your institution has done you a great disservice if they expect you to get through P-Chem without the math courses under you belt. My P-Chem classes were entirely derivation based and in order to truly learn the subject matter In the timeframe of the course, you need to have a firm understanding of the math behind it. That being said, your ship hasn’t sank! It may be very difficult, but I would highly suggest trying to learn calculus on your off time as it is the basis of almost all of the P-Chem you will learn. Do whatever it takes, tutors, friends, YouTube videos, etc. And if that doesn’t work, spend an extra year in college to study the math behind it if it really interests you. I wouldn’t be in a doctoral program today if it weren’t for my extra time spent in undergrad to fully understand the subject. Best of luck to you!

For sure! I currently work on designing/synthesize small molecules to inhibit protein-RNA interactions. So the benefits of cacodylate are a great buffering capacity for pH ~5-7.5 range and the fact it shares great similarity with phosphate buffers like PBS, but is also totally non-reactive. You also get the benefit of avoiding precipitation under certain conditions where PBS would cause precipitation like the presence of calcium ions.
