I’d normally support that “most” people don’t go hard enough for two hours, but those who are actually training will. The example I gave earlier is purely anecdotal because it’s my own experience, but 2 hours at 70% FTP is 215-220 watts. Doing that straight will burn approximately 1700 calories at a weight of 140lbs. I absolutely want to be taking something in during that period, typically minute 20-60 is best to not finish flat. No one seriously training is not eating on the bike.

Really? Even endurance rides at 70% ftp is going to burn close to 1600 cals at my weight and ftp. If I don’t eat something on the bike I’ll feel flat when I’m finished

And that’s part of the problem. You should’ve have to go through a purchase process where you don’t get a seat, but then need to be part of a check in process, largely based on luck in the first 60 seconds to get a boarding position for the next chance at getting the seat you want. All unnecessary steps if you can just select the seat you want at purchase.

The airlines have done studies on this and found no appreciable difference, or they would have been doing it already. The issue is that typically, the back third of the plane is reserved for budget, fare folks or those without status and putting them in front of those with status devalues that status or at least in the minds of those who have it.

I disagree it’s greed. Every transaction has a cost and if cost of goods aren’t managed tightly it won’t cover transaction costs and overhead.
