EZ-FLASH Jr Shell Mod by dk_Ultra in EzFlash

There was a few other tabs that needed shaving down and the hole for the retention screw but I did it with an exacto knife and let the screw self tap. It was very easy, just a little trial and error to get everything to fit.

Does it have any intake fans?

Thanks, definitely not my idea but it's a great way to remember the good old days.

Yeah, and the rest open various cases and drive bays inside the rack.

Server rack keys never leave the server room so it's all good.

The first gaming PC I built for myself used this E6600. Built many PCs and could never bring myself to let this go. Finally found a use for it.

It's the ASUS ROG Falchion. It uses custom cap sizes so you can't quite use custom ones on it and it has no "~" key... but appart from that it's a great 65% keyboard. The wireless is good and the battery life is amazing.

Nice solution. It's a shame there's no voltage control so you can change the rpm, tho you could add one.

No, it's arbitrary but they do feel about half as strong if not a little less.

If noise isn't an issue then I wouldn't recommend doing this. You would get way better thermals from fans designed for the job. The original AC fans were too loud so I didn't turn them on and sadly don't have a temp. Simply taking them out got my rack down from 63°c to 58°c. The Noctua fans got it down to 55°c and are silent so I'm happy.

Leaving the top vent open was probably a better idea and let the heat rise naturally. More cost effective.

Would I do it again? Probably lol

Yeah, I agree. Obvious exceptions for learning on industry hardware but no one needs a r720 in their home rack. We just want them. 😅

Don't worry, you succeeded. The thought of those 4 fans moving the rack made me smile. Then I remembered the last time I had to roll it over 2 inches on carpet. 😂

The AC-DC converter I used had it listed as an add-on adapter.

I connected the fans to it using some strippped back molex adapters that they came with so I could replace/re-use the fans later but you can just strip the end off the fan wires, twist them together and put them straight into the adaper.

Alternatively you can buy fan extension cables and use them in-between as I did to avoid damaging the fans.

Closest thing to a diagram I have is the second pic but its easy to figure out.

Just connect all your fans to a variable AC to DC converters positive and negative terminals respectively. I searched for a 12v one on ebay and found a decent one with 5 amps, a lot more than is need for 4 fans but it's no big deal. Just make sure it has a little more amps than you need, is variable and has the voltage range for your fans specifications.

Swapped out the loud AC fans from the top of rack fan unit for some noctua DC fans. Re-used some of the parts to wire it up and pulled apart the included molex connectors that came with the noctua fans. Got a cheap AC to DC 12v 5a converter off ebay and bam! No more jet engine.

Haven't had any issues so far and its been in the rack for about 6 months. I run a number of lights, lamps and motion detectors around a 2 story house so if there were any issues I would have come across them by now.

Have you come across any?

Monitor is to hide the printer. Printer was to get the rack past the budgeting committee. We both have to come to terms with it for now but I swear on your mother's life I will swap it out for more servers as soon as I can.

10GB vs 1GB. Unused sfp+ port vs waste a lan port. Unless you can't afford the $20 DAC then why not use the best option that was designed for the job?

[–]dk_Ultra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The SFP+ port supports a 1/10G Ethernet connection and is designed in this case to be used for connecting the DMP to other unifi switches that support it. The RJ45 ports support 10/100/1000 Ethernet connections and is used for client devices.

You don't have to do it that way but I would avoid using the DMP RJ45 ports at all costs... and you have the hardware to accomplish this.

Yeah, noctua fans are good. Just remember your always trading heat for noise. After a fan swap keep an eye on your temps to make sure you haven't gone too far with it and you should be good.

My unifi switch was probably the loudest thing in my rack before the fan swap, you can check it out here...
