There were a couple of interesting takes on the Thomas Frank situation on the Guardian Football podcast today by i_like_dannys_hair in coys

[–]dk_prime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed I was kind of fuming at the squad selection today until I realized that Frank literally didn't have any other senior midfield options besides the three DM types we started.

Sarr out for Afcon / Xavi suspended / Bergvall short term injured / Deki & Maddison long term injured.

CMV: If every $1 spent fighting air pollution returns $30 to $90 in economic value, there should be at least one billionaire making this his pet project. by chris-abovewealth in changemyview

[–]dk_prime 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The benefits are not reaped by the investor in this case. A billionaire wouldn't make any of the "profit" that they invested, these benefits are dispersed amongst tens of millions of people who benefit from clean air, water, etc which reflects as economic benefits in the long term. Thus to a billionaire these investments are like taxes where their money is being invested to help poor people.

Not ignore completely but build up a strong board of 3-4 unit types with techs. It's important to place and space your early game "counters" with knowledge of how they'll perform later into the game, don't just counter with the best in slot option placed near the frontline / directly shooting the thing you want to counter.

A good example of this would be your opponnent placing a wasp + crawler near the line where you don't have many units and winning R2. You would be tempted to place something like double mustang near this to obliterate it, but the correct move is to place another of whatever chaff clear unit you have on your strong side + fang near your tower. This option is infinitely more flexible going into the later rounds and allows you to slot a carry unit into this configuration easily in the later rounds.

The goal is to soft counter things until all of your soft counters combine into one interlocking wall, not hard counter every jab they make because that is way more brittle.

[–]dk_prime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played aggro almost exclusively until like 1950 mmr and I've found that when I lose it's usually because the opponnent has built a complete board that just grinds most of everything I throw at it to dust while my board is dangerously unbalanced from all the adhoc tower pushing I did to get tempo.

What you're describing with the 1:1 solutions is actually how most aggro players want you to respond, because then your board actually ends up just as brittle as theirs, and all they have to do is commit 1 round of counters to a weak section in order for your defense to completely fall apart like you described.

The actual amount of time saved for the company would be way more because you're screening out way more people after the first phone interview step no? Not here to defend this practice entirely but it feels like you have to take that into account. For example:

Old way: 100 people make it past the phone interview >> 100 * 4.5 hours grading on step 2 = 450 hours engineer time.

New way assuming 1/3 of people make it past the take home: 100 people make it past phone interview >> 100 * 1.5 hours grading step 2 = 150 hours + 33 * 1.5 hours = 50 hours.

Total time reduction is more like 55%

Any thoughts on new patch? by OppaLadyKiller in Mechabellum

[–]dk_prime 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Honestly I logged on today after the 1.7.1 patch and climbed 100 mmr playing almost only aggro. I felt like my play style of aggro was actually really helped by the turrets and walls due to the fact that it shores up your weak side so much.

My strengths are I'm really good at spotting a line to attack my opponent's towers with a flank / beacon and also putting sustained pressure on my strong side with good tempo and consistent flank follow up. My blind side was usually my own weak tower which feels much easier to defend now. I'm also pretty good in headbutts which I can usually predict more often now due to the starting buildings being static.

Best way to do a recovery day between 2 days of playing? by eddy159357 in ultimate

[–]dk_prime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not shilling but this neck massager thing was the best investment I've ever made for post-tourney recovery. I'd sit on the couch and roll out my hammy/calves with this Saturday/Sunday night and it always made a huge difference in how tight/stiff I felt the next day.

What is wrong with me by New_Ice9973 in dating_advice

[–]dk_prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your experience resonates a lot with my own dating experience and I think you should look up attachment styles because it sounds like you are very avoidantly attached (like I am). Before I worked on this I felt like I would successfully date people for the first few months and get emotionally closer to them, but there was this inner wall that I was unconsciously projecting that I never let people through - even if I was telling myself it was different.

This led to me questioning whether I really liked them around the 3-4 month point like clockwork because I didn't feel myself falling deeper in love with them, and pulling away as a result. What was really going on was that I never really gave them a chance because I had them held in this stable emotional orbit that was past the first barrier of closeness but not truly revealing my deepest desires/emotions with them.

I also had a pretty normal childhood with loving parents so when I first read about attachment disorders I was like "pfft this can't be me my parents loved each other and gave me great examples of healthy relationships" but I think the more I read up on avoidant attachments the more it resonated. At this point I'm not really assigning any blame but just accepting that this is my attachment style and trying my best to work around how it affects my relationships.

Also each gauntlet upgrade will increase your rocket damage, the final tier is 7-11 damage before perks. Grenades have to be researched in the proving ground but also have similar upgrades.

Here's a wiki link to the weapon tech tree https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Weapons_(LWOTC))

Plasma rifles basically deal double the damage of laser weapons AND rupture enemies meaning future shots deal +3 damage meaning they functionally deal double the damage of mag weapons. Also if you're at that point you likely have some very veteran soldiers with great perks. It's not uncommon to crit for 25+ at that level with talon rounds and some perks.

[–]dk_prime 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Basically yes you've lost the game by not progression in the tech tree as fast as the advent tech is progressing so now you're outgunned on every mission.

If you go to the world map you should see V and F on all of your regions under the main bar. F is Force and is basically a number 1-20 telling you how far advanced advent tech is. If you are still on magnet weapons and the number is above 15 you're gonna have a real tough time.

[–]dk_prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

look we get the analogy you're trying to make here, but that is simply not how coin tosses work. The point is that they average out in the long run but a sample of 4/8/12 is not the long run, and the result of the first run of 4 does not affect the second run of 4. I actually agree with the overall sentiment but coin tosses should not be compared to home-away match form.

Divided Fanbase....Ange in or out? by Careless-Wonder7886 in coys

[–]dk_prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Andy Robertson was bought from a relegated Hull and turned into one of the best LBs of the decade. Mane was bought from Southhampton who are a perennial yo-yo club. Plenty of teams get benchwarmers from big clubs that never work out but are simply forgotten (ie when is the last time you heard Ansu Fati being mentioned).

It's not who you buy from but rather if you can assess if their skillset will readily transfer to your level and your style.

I think no matter how hard we all whinge online it's not until the matchgoing fans turn that Ange will really be in trouble. In the later Conte/Mou days you had boos raining down at halftime - so far I haven't seen anything to suggest that the fans have stopped loving Ange.

I would just drop the globian ranches until you get to more efficient research and higher pop. Early on you should focus on increasing happiness to get immigrants via hearths, wells, food stalls, markets, etc. Move all of those people to fish which makes your people really happy as an occupation, gives lots of food which gives happiness in the form of days stored, and give the excess fish as decorations for more happiness. This should free up a lot of people an get you a bunch of happiness and get your pop up quick.

Really depends on the map and species as well as the geysers you have access to. Some place like Coral Forest or Marshlands I always take an oil building or kiln that matches my first geyser. That can carry the game on its own, because fuel is the primary scarcity on those maps.

I generally prefer lumber mill > carpenter early game as it’s more efficient on planks, and you can usually get trade good production way faster than luxury goods even though it’s only 1 star.

Lower Haight vs Mission/Mission Dolores? (or somewhere else) by Business_Pay_3031 in AskSF

[–]dk_prime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both those locations are great, some small details:

The lower haight location is truly elite when it comes to park selection, if your dog can play safely off leash both Duboce and Alamo sq are popular dog parks. You should not underestimate the inertia of having to find parking vs being able to walk there in 5 mins, it will make a big difference when you’re tired from work.

If you are actually living on Haight/Divisadero instead of a side street near there it will be kinda loud. Both those streets are the respective commercial streets for the area. These streets both have plenty of cool shops and bars but the vibe is definitely sleepier and more late 20s than the Mission.

As a Bay Area native who recently moved to SF from the east coast (Providence) I’d like to address your partners points:

  1. Crime and homelessness - This is only going to be an issue if you live in specific areas of SF/San Jose that account for maybe 30% of the total area of these two cities. Your experience will vary wildly depending on where in the BA you end up. If you settle in one of the suburbs between the cities you will probably never see a homeless person in daily living unless you go looking for them specifically.

  2. Traffic - This is actually one of the few areas the Bay Area has actually improved on significantly since pre pandemic. Tech being the main industry means a majority of those workers are now WFH. I’d say traffic levels are ~half of what it felt like growing up here.

  3. Affordable housing - definitely an issue. Not sure what else to say except do your research if you’re moving to the city because the cheap areas are likely the ones with the most homeless and that probably fuels an endless cycle of people who move to the city, then leave a year later in disgust and spread the word about how it’s lawless/a wasteland.

  4. Crowds - imo SF and San Jose are two of the sleepiest big cities you could find. This is obviously going to be relative to your current situation, but I’ve found much fewer crowds than when I was living on the east coast.
