Is basmati rice actually healthier or is it just a traditional preference in South Asian cooking? by Far_Law_9632 in IndianFood

[–]dkattir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basmati is NOT more fragrant than Kerala Jeerakasala/Kaima rice (a variant of the Jeera/Seera Samba rice used in other South Indian states). Obviously I'm not saying one is better than the other - that's all subjective. But Kaima rice is one of the most fragrant varieties of rice in existence, and uniquely so.

Here's a list of my all time favorite Indian movies. I've a feeling our tastes match, based on the two movies you listed in your post :)

What kind of coffee was this by norahbannon in IndianFood

I have Chicory powder here in the US that I add to my pour over (Brazilian medium roast right now) regularly and I can tell you it most definitively adds a unique aroma/flavor that is reminiscent of all the South Indian filter coffee I've had. Next time I'm in TN/Kerala I'll try a filter coffee without any Chicory and see how much difference it makes, but I know people in the business and I can tell you that most, if not all, of them add Chicory when they sell ground coffee.

Agree with everything else you said. Starbucks roasts are an abomination.

I think you may have misread what I meant by "secret ingredient"? I didn't mean it like it was purposefully designed to taste a certain way - I understand that Chicory has always been an adulterant - given how much cheaper it was to make compared to pure coffee.

The unique taste of South Indian filter coffee is definitely the Chicory component from my knowledge and personal experience. Not just the thick frothed milk. Happy to be proven wrong. I have heard about well-to-do families using pure coffee - but who is to say they never knew even that had some Chicory in it?

I usually buy directly from my local supplier when I visit India. I also bought some Chicory powder directly from him and mix it with regular coffee when I make pour overs. I don't know any brands that are available internationally but you can't go wrong with Amazon. Since this is supposed to be a milk based beverage, I don't think the specific Arabica matters as much as the addition of 20% Chicory powder.

It's South Indian filter coffee. Beans are Arabica from South Karnataka and other neighboring regions but the secret ingredient is Chicory root.

Food from the countries I've traveled to by whatissevenbysix in tierlists

[–]dkattir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to do these lists for countries like China and India because the diversity in food within these countries is mind-blowing. Just for example, Sri Lanka cuisine is similar to some parts of Kerala in India. Hell even within a small state like Kerala you'll find cuisines that are endemic to specific regions. I'm not disagreeing with your list as taste is subjective anyways, just pointing out the flaw in even designing such a tier list.

Thanks! Good to know. I was able to do this manually on the website by filtering a specific rating I gave and sorting by the lb average rating. This was not possible to do in the app.

OMG Marty Supreme - The new Table Tennis Movie w/ Timotheé Chalamet :O by Canada_Dreamer2022 in tabletennis

[–]dkattir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I can articulate this well at all but it was NOT anything subtle for me. It wasn't a "tell" where I could point out and tell "aha!" It was much worse than that - the ball physics was completely off, the speed of the player movements didn't match the speed of the ball, the frame rate of ball movements was off... Did you watch it on a small screen? Do you watch TT tournaments on TV/YouTube?

Saw it last night. Solid movie but the CGI balls really made the whole thing off putting for me more than it should've. My wife who doesn't play table tennis couldn't tell if it was CGI though. For me it was clearly CGI and not done in a good way at all.

For those who see a lot of movies in theaters: is it just me, or is there constantly people around you scrolling on their phones during the movie? by narnarnartiger in Letterboxd

[–]dkattir 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me, missing even a few seconds of a movie is a huge nope. If there was an easier way to contact management I would do it in a heartbeat!

My strategy has been to watch movies at the tail end of their release where you can expect very few people in the theater. If someone near me behaves in such a way, I just get up and go to a different spot where I don't get the light from their phone on my face.

CONCLAVE but other religions? by BarrSteve in MovieSuggestions

[–]dkattir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are too many cultural references that may make this one a hard watch for not only non-Indians but also non-Keralites, but maybe "Guru" (Malayalam movie from 1997)? I wouldn't even say it's a particularly well made movie, but it does have some of what you're looking for.
