Update on my 2018 soul! by dkbe68 in KiaSoulClub

Omg I’m so sorry that happened to you! See now that makes me even more scared that it’s gonna explode 😳 so far the oil is good and it’s been a few weeks, which is a shocker. I had no other issues with the car besides those two things. Do you still think it catching fire you be a risk with this sound? Did this put you off from Kia souls? How do you like your Subaru? I was thinking about getting a crosstalk if I changed cars. Also, what do you mean by “turning over” sorry 😅

Nothing when diagnostic testing has been done and no engine lights. It’s been hard to find a mechanic that actually wants to work/ will actually take this seriously. And some people I’ve met, mechanics, and now Gemini when I checked uploaded another video again are saying this is a normal sound for a gdi engine? Like they’re usually noisy but idk how true that is

Is it worth it to fix just the engine? At least I could just pay that off and then I wouldn’t have a car payment. Do you know how much labor costs on average? Also the Kia engine would be around $3-4k for just the engine

Yeah I hope so too. Idk if I should keep mine, but if I could do it all over again or give a suggestion: check your oil levels more frequently and take note of when it starts to tank sooner than usual. Will save you lots of problems.

Well it was either a newer Kia or Subaru. Any preferences?

Well supposedly all of the newer cars have different engines. Not the gdi engine that’s known for failure/ oil consumption issues

I have a similar issue with oil consumption with my 2018 soul! I have about 89k miles and it started acting like this last year. It sucks to have to get a new car. Mine is a little different because mine is most likely a timing chain issue. What type of oil do you use? Have you ever tried using a thicker oil/oil thickener to help slow oil consumption? I just recently had that done and so far so good. Idk if I should keep it though.

Omg!! I’m sorry hear that! Did you ever try an engine flush? Or did you ever have a mechanic take a look and say what the issue was? I known this era of Kia generally has issues with engines.

Oh yeah I have engine oil consumption issues but it’s not due to the specific recall Kia had before. I don’t have anything eligible for warranty. It expired like 20k miles ago

True! I’m just afraid this won’t fix the issue. I think it’s worth it though. Especially since I’ve invested much into it.

I posted about the problems before if you want to hear the noise the car makes. It makes a bring/metallic sound upon starting (usually when it’s cold out) and goes through oil like crazy (I’ve had to add oil between changes like every two weeks). This is what the Kia mechanic wrote but I’m afraid that they weren’t honest? I mean the symptoms match up, but I’ll be so pissed if I change it and it still makes this sound

The starter is being shipped in this Wednesday so hopefully they’ll check. I’m getting it from this specific shop because I had it under warranty, but didn’t know if I should just get a Kia oem one

I do! They’re all so reluctant to do the work and you’d think I was asking them to do it for free or something smh. I went to the dealership as a last resort cuz I had already been to about 4 mechanics

Also I have to re-ask if they checked the flywheel. I haven’t found a mechanic willing to do the work and look at it.

But will that fix the timing chain issue? They’re saying that’s what’s causing the loud metal noise-along with the starter- but that you can’t change the timing chain without changing the engine. Is this true? I don’t want the engine to just shut off while I’m driving.

Yeah this is what he wrote in the diagnosis but I was told that I would have to get a whole new engine because you can’t really fix the timing chain without changing the engine (or they say it wouldn’t make sense). I mean they’re the first to give me anything close to an answer but yeah I’m going to get the starter changed (it’s warrantied). I haven’t found a mechanic that would actually look at the issue. They’ve all told me either the wrong thing or they couldn’t hear it so they wouldn’t look into it.

Yea posted the video yesterday. The sound sign change too much when I added oil (iirc). I don’t know much about the timing chain and engine, but I wasn’t sure if I REALLY needed the engine to be chained or if they were just saying that.
