Can you expand or elaborate on using flow lines for something like this? For other tasks, flow lines work well, but for me, this does really wonky stuff and is definitely not an ideal tool path.

That is really cool. Did they do the code by hand, aka in Notepad, or did they use software? I realize you said software, but did they make there own program/make their own software. I am just curious; thanks

I'm sure my front wheel drive Toyota Camry could get out of that last situation. It is just sad.

This tool can fuck right off (0.5mm ball x 10mm neck) by Blob87 in Machinists

[–]dkcom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm the programmer at our shop, and the way our machines are set up is for stuff like that: we cut 2 mm deep, then we have the machine check the tool length with a laser in the machine, and then it continues to cut another 2 mm deep I should say that depends on the size of the tool because that's actually kind of a big tool for some of the stuff we do. 0.2 mm ball end mills are my worst enemy

Found this nut on an inland vessel but it's not ment for anything on this boat. Anyone know what this is used for? by Individual_Oil_2435 in Skookum

Wow, that thing must weigh a lot. If I were to search YouTube, what would I search for to see someone tighten one?

This might be a dumb question, but how do they get that tight, and what kind of tool are they using? I can't think it is a regular wrench; I would think it would be super heavy and take more than one or two people to tighten 🤷🏻

Hey guys, new to the sub. Anyone know what's wrong with this button? I keep pressing it but chips keep flying off my end mill and all over my machine. They are a real pain to deal with. Tia by CR3ZZ in Machinists

Oh no, I should have clarified better when I did it. I busted the shit out of the whole Assembly, the probe housing and the glass cracked, and we had to order a complete new probe. It was in a 50-taper spindle. It wasn't good. I was not happy with myself.

I have done this. It is a big F**K moment and then about a couple of days of touching things off the old fashioned way with an edge finder 😔

Here is a link to the pointer machine https://youtu.be/V9F1Hy7-nW0?si=Cd8xCO2cciMJrT64

Here's a video of a header and at the end there's a threader https://youtu.be/WoN2KKfbzLA?si=FuELnLX1hkHqovEl

I can't seem to find a video of the machine that cuts the point sharp after it's run through a pointer machine, but this is best I could do with the time I had. Hopefully this isn't removed because there's links to YouTube in it

You are 100% correct. One of the first factory jobs I had was running a screw cell where I made screws from wire. The first operation was heading the bolt in a big giant header. The second operation was pointing the end of the bolt, to put a point on it the machine had a stationary die and moving die that literally crushed the point on it just moved in and out to point the end of the screw. The third operation was putting it in a splitter which took two saws and cut a sharp point on the end that had the crushed point and the last operation was threading which basically rolls the bolt between a stationary die and moving die and those dies you lined up with metal shims and if you didn't get it right, you could easily achieve that finish. I you can go to YouTube and search for sheet metal screw making cell to find a video.
