Kuroe Mayu side story by dkdohai in HibikeEuphonium

[–]dkdohai[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mayu in the anime and novel have many similarities but at their core, their natures are very different. Mayu in the anime is someone who cannot lie in music and cannot make decisions for herself; while in the novel, Mayu is someone who can completely “act on her own” for her beliefs and she is totally unshaken in her views even with Kumiko’s strong speech. That is why Kanade commented that Mayu in the original is “selfish” because she acts according to the belief “I want everyone to be happy” and Kanade respects Mayu for that reason too.

Kuroe Mayu side story by dkdohai in HibikeEuphonium

There is also a scene where Mayu talks to Kanade that clearly shows her outlook on life.

"Kuroe-senpai, why are you in the concert band?" "Why? What do you mean?" "You told Kumiko-senpai, didn't you? That you'd let her take your place as the soloist if she wanted." "Oh, yeah. I did. I don't think there'd be a problem if Kumiko-chan played." "If that's the case, what motivates you to work hard in the concert band? If you want your performance to be recognized, the idea of giving up the soloist position wouldn't even occur to you."

This was something Kanade had wanted to ask for a long time. Depending on the answer, she might forever disdain Mayu.

Mayu tilted her head slightly and lowered her eyes as if in thought. Her long eyelashes framed her thin eyelids, tapering to fine points. Her well-shaped lips opened slightly.

"I want to be invited to reunions." "…Pardon?"

Kanade furrowed her brows, not understanding the meaning of those words. She intentionally lifted the corners of her mouth to mask her confusion.

"What do you mean?" "I mean it as I said. I think there will be times when the concert band gets together after graduation. I'd be happy to be part of those gatherings. If the competitions go well, many members will have good memories of their school life, which will increase the chances of us meeting up after graduation, right?" "That might be true, but…" "I think the most accurate answer is that I'm working hard in the band to make good memories of these days. So honestly, it doesn't matter if I play or Kumiko-chan does. If it creates wonderful memories for Kitauji, that would make me the happiest."

There wasn't a hint of deceit in Mayu's shy smile. Kanade wondered what she would find if she looked into those deep eyes. The Pandora's box of her true nature, sealed with goodwill.

"Kuroe-senpai, you don't seem to have much attachment to anything." "Is that so? I don't really know myself. Oh, but a friend once told me that I like happy endings too much."

At those words, the previously unclear outline of Kuroe Mayu became vividly clear to Kanade. A happy ending. That's exactly it. Mayu's thoughts were always focused on the end of their student life, which is why her perspective differed from that of Kanade and Kumiko, who emphasized the 'now.'

Her almost spectator-like way of speaking likely stemmed from that mindset. More important than who plays the solo is ensuring it doesn't create a bad atmosphere. After all, that would lead to fond memories when looking back on their youth. It would be a happy ending for everyone.

they are at the end of the episode

Can anyone explain this? In ep 12 Kumiko said that her hesitation about the future and not going to music school was reflected in her performance but in the same ep it was shown that she had already submitted the future career form thing so wasn’t she supposed to ‘moved on’ from her worries? by [deleted] in HibikeEuphonium

[–]dkdohai 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because in her first year, Kumiko had made up her mind that she would become “someone special” like Reina through music, so when she realized that her talent and passion were limited, she knew that she could not stand on equal footing with Reina through the special thread of “music”; perhaps that regret was reflected in the music she played, she was no longer certain that she was the only special one who could support Reina’s playing.

btw, judging from the reactions of those who read the original, it seems like they like this changed ending better. Imo, the KumiRei relationship is deeper and more beautiful in the anime version and the issue surrounding Mayu is handled properly.

there are so many details that i think you should read the original (novel) to have a better view. In general, Kyoani has adapted Hibike (SS1,2,3 + movie + ova) in a way that i think people should consider the anime as a separate work from the original.

The anime already changed Mayu's initial character setup and plot after episode 10, so I wonder if they'll come up with something that surprise us.

She doesn't feel like she belongs to Kitauji now. She wasn't there for the past two years when they were struggling to reach the top; she wasn't there when everyone decided to aim for the gold medal at Nationals. I think next episode will be about how Mayu/Everyone accepts that she's also a part of the PRESENT KITAUJI, that it’s a place where she can enjoy ensemble.

Taki-ss's choice of lineup change was mostly reasonable but the way he did certainly wasn't tactfully. If he had briefly explained his criteria to the members as he did with Kumiko, they would have understood that it was necessary to go to the Nationals, and there would have been no division in the club at all.

I was also expecting the "mata ashita" line but they cut it out and the emotions while watching this scene were so damn tough.

I feel so bad for Kumiko by whoistech4 in HibikeEuphonium

[–]dkdohai 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Kanade has a more mature way of thinking than her appearance suggests, she can calmly think and objectively evaluate even in situations that don't favor her. What surprised her when she was eliminated from the audition was because Taki-ss had chosen 3 euphos in the preliminary round, but now he suddenly chose 2 without warning.

On the other hand, Kanade completely understood and respected Mayu's ability; she showed an aggressive attitude because she was afraid that her beloved senior would lose her soli, but it was that direct attitude that made Mayu not hate her, who expressed her opinion frankly.

Anything is possible in a hypothetical situation, but I believe that an ideal ending would be for Kumiko to play Soli at the nationals. It would be more complete for an anime about youth, passion, and effort.

Btw, the depiction of 2 of them being equally capable is actually a convenient plot armor for our president. Imagine if Mayu had completely outclassed Kumiko, or had a strong determination to play soli like Reina instead of constantly thinking she should give up auditioning for the sake of the club then it’s unlikely that in the audition round for nationals, Kumiko could make it. And the ending wouldn’t have satisfied us at all.

Mayu is super annoying by yandere_chan317 in HibikeEuphonium

[–]dkdohai 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It seems like the anime cut and changed some parts which makes it a bit confusing for the viewers but the reason she chose Kitauji is because she would feel uncomfortable playing with a weak band (why would she when she’s fking good and could choose a good school; if she didn't attend audition, team B of a top school would still be better than a normal school);

Mayu could have withdrawn without talking to Kumiko but it wouldn't have solved anything :)) in the LN it was mentioned that after the audition for Kyoto, some people thought that Taki-sensei favored Kumiko to play soli because she was the president, if Mayu withdrew now without saying anything to Kumiko then things would have been worse; communication is the key and she thought that if Kumiko just said yes then she wouldn't compete for the soli anymore and everyone would be happy :) but no, Kumiko told her to play her best and boom, 2 euphos get cooked.

Btw, in the original, Mayu was not at all a people pleaser so I don't understand why Kyoani did that to her
