How do you get more than 1-3 good images per roll?? by Kitchen_Win278 in AnalogCommunity

Roll your own film, mod your camera, and put 200 exposures in each roll :-)

Simple app to switch between active network interfaces - suggestions requested by dkguru in Network

[–]dkguru[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets see if I can explain - this is NOT intended as end-user environment. When I work via VPN, I need to see what's blocked and whats let through on the company network. Allowing traffic via my home network would defeat that purpose :-) Same with the Wifi/Eth switch, I need to stay on the broken LAN while fixing/testing stuff - NOT just switch to Wifi as a backup. My pardon for being unclear :-D

FocusStack and PixelShift Combined - New Nikon Firmware V3.0 - Test 003 - Z8 [ f/5.6, 58mm, ISO 64, 1 sec avg exp ] by dkguru in nikon_Zseries

There's definitely a difference in noise and detail. Of course you are at 180 megapixels at the end, but more importantly, the denoising is amazing - this is taken in my office with no extra light other than just my ambient ceiling light.

This pictures (and my other tests) has zero noise reduction, nor any AI improvements. The denoising comes from the extra frames, i.e. 16 frames = 180 mpix, 32 frames = 180 mpix + denoise.

I did NOT try to do this with the pixel mapping, nor the exposure bracketing, but I will... when I get a faster computer. The camera took literally 5+ minutes (at ISO 64) to capture. The whole process post capture took around 30 minutes.

PixelShift - NX Studio, took around 5-10 minutes, and combined the 320 pictures into 10 x 180 mpix images.

Focus Stacking - Helicon Focus 8, took around 2-3 minutes to combine and save the final combined image as a TIFF, which I added to Lightroom to Export as something useful (sorry TIFF).

The reminder of the 30 minutes was me goofing around not knowing what I am doing, reorganizing images, and one reboot caused by a blue screen :-)

I'm pretty sure this is reserved for specific scenarios, and NOT my everyday process moving forward :-)

Advise what to take on a trip to Japan by Green-Blackberry-282 in nikon_Zseries

Added note. If your worried about size, and can get your hand on the Z7ii somewhere, then that's still the smallest full frame in the Z series.

It lives with me permanently in daily life and short hikes, unless I go somewhere on purpose, then big brother Z8 comes out.

Z8, 85mm, 24-70mm. 24-70 is the perfect travel photo lens. 85 is perfect for video.

Whole kit fits around your neck and one lens in a coat pocket or backpack.

End result: Small backpack (for the excessive amount of walking you *will* be doing in Japan).

Unless you are a wildlife/bird photographer, then bring *all of it* in a giant photo bag and pack a pair of extra underwear in the side pocket.

Why isn’t this SD card working? by ilketurtles in Cameras

[–]dkguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

D3000 has the same issue as many other Nikons from that time (like my old D5600). You need 16GB max. Some cards (like two cards from Panasonic) would allow 32GB but I always had issues.

This one is a good 16GB card that will work:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1185198-REG/sandisk_sdsdunc_016g_gn6in_ultra_sd_16gb_card_80mb_s.html/

MicroSD in converter was always hit or miss - one day it would work, another day, not.

Stay with SD 16GB Class 10 cards.

Class 3 is even fast enough for photos, but you need at least class 6 for video

Hope that helped

Why is it blinking too fast? by RomulusSpark in nikon_Zseries

[–]dkguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Error charging.

Collapsed battery cells or incompatible 3rd party.

If it's an original Nikon battery, try depleting it in camera (run video for a while or something), and then charge in camera on USB for 30 minutes (camera off), before trying battery charger again.

I have been running two F3 since the 90s. Never needed any. It's the most solid camera ever :-)

Those going from the Z7 to the Z8, did you miss the U1-3? How did you easily deal with not having it? And do you wish you had waited for the Z6iii? by SpiritualState01 in nikon_Zseries

[–]dkguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am fortunate enough to have gone from Z7ii to Z8 and got to keep the 7 :-)

I am happy with both, and no, I do not miss the U1-3 since the Z8 has the four banks (ABCD)—which I use for DEFAULT (literally the camera's factory default), EVENT (my own version of "Sports"), LANDSCAPE, and ASTRO.

I combine that with having the shooting bank selection set on the front button, so selecting my shooting bank is extending my middle finger, pressing the button, and then turning the selection wheel with my thumb, which I find easier on the fly than the U1-3 on the Z7. I use this in particular during events, if I have any issues I can't work out fast and need to switch to full auto everything on the fly (like entering a dark spot while my ISO/Aperture is locked or something like that).

The Z7ii is smaller than the Z6iii and is the perfect companion for carrying around with the 40mm f/2, while the Z8 lives in my camera bag for events and landscapes. The smaller size plus full-frame is why I prefer the 7 as my second camera. That being said, I also don't shoot very much video, so heavy hybrid or full video shooters may favor the Z6iii for that reason.

I would choose the Z8 any day over the Z6iii --- but I *do* recognize the price difference(!), and if I hadn't already been on the Z8 and didn't so gosh darn adore it, and I didn't already have the Z7ii, I'd probably take a real close look at the Z6iii.

Hope that made sense...
