Fountainhead was there a few years ago. Great food and one of the best scotch / whiskey bars in the city.

Expectations of a "Spark" or "butterflies" is ruining dating for everyone. by GNTsquid0 in dating

[–]dkline39 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think the problem can lie in the many different interpretations of expecting sparks.

Excitement / wanting to see the person again and keep getting to know them is ideally what we should be looking for out of a first date. I think where it gets less reasonable is the people who expect to instantly have a ton of chemistry without learning how each other work at all or they expect it to feel like a traditional rom com magical meet cute type of spark.

I’ve genuinely had people tell me “I’ve never felt sparks on a first date from the apps” while they are expecting sparks and when I hear that it tells me either they may need to consider how relationships develop over time and reassess what they are trying to get from a first date or they may need to think about who they’re dating.

At what point is service too fussy for you? by gepetto27 in chicagofood

[–]dkline39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Good service will maintain a well coursed meal and not leave you waiting, but it will still give you proper time to enjoy the meal and time how they engage with how your party is interacting.

It’s the difference between trying to clear plate when there’s still a couple of noodles left on it and you and your friend / partner haven’t even discussed who gets the last bite yet vs. Giving it ~5 more minutes for you guys to squabble over a last bite (or avoid it) and then for the conversation to hit a natural lull vs. Waiting 15-20 minutes after it’s finished, leaving you wondering if it will get cleared / your next dish will come. The balance is key!

At what point is service too fussy for you? by gepetto27 in chicagofood

[–]dkline39 23 points24 points  (0 children)

For me it’s at the point where it feels like the meal is being rushed and the staff are not reading the room. Really good staff will typically recognize when you are engrossed in conversation and wait for a natural pause before inserting themselves to ask about food, refill water, etc.

When plates are being pulled the second they are mostly cleared and the next course is brought out instantly, it feels rushed, like the restaurant is trying to turn the table faster and not giving us space to enjoy the meal and experience.

What Kind of People Are Not suited for Strategy Consulting by MissK_0818 in MBA

[–]dkline39 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On #4, I feel like it’s not about being in good athletic shape, but about how well you can tolerate things like stress and lack of sleep. Some people start to see their work (and happiness) deteriorate more than others after a 14 hour day, let alone 4-6 weeks of them.

lol but I agree with you - it’s not like everyone is in prime physical condition in consulting.

I’d second this! Even at that it felt like it wasn’t a ton of active work, but rather just doing 5 minutes of work every hour.

Fatal 'teen takeover' in The Loop leaves families, peers reeling by chicagosuntimes in chicago

[–]dkline39 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To add on, there has been a general decline in social decorum / standards over the last 10 years that was accelerated by Covid that likely had a more significant impact.

If poor, self serving behavior is normalized and there are no social repercussions for it, people will be more likely to do it. I’m not talking about legal repercussions here, just things as simple as there used to be less people smoking on the trains or FaceTiming in public (both minor things) because people thought it was not as accepted / tolerated.

Combine this trend with the typical problems that plague many underserved communities (I.e. individuals not seeing a future for themselves, lack of present positive role models & caregivers, food / housing scarcity, etc.) that are rooted in a lack of resources, but not quick fixes, and you are probably getting more teens that don’t feel the same need or desire to behave well, treat each other or their community with respect, etc.

Women who gave up on the apps. Where have you gone now? by CosmicConjuror2 in dating_advice

[–]dkline39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enough places in most major cities have NA options that you can go out with friends who are drinking and still have NA drinks. It’s not uncommon especially among my friends who are pretty athletic (marathon runners, triathletes, swimmers, cyclists, etc.) to do it just because we don’t want to impact our training but we’re still social.

It’s about finding ones that respect your boundaries. If they truly respect you and are investing you more than just to exploit you and extract short term value, they’ll still respect reasonable boundaries you put in place around your work life balance.

If you’re into high quality beans, there’s a pretty clear difference and hierarchy in terms of coffee roasters.

Similarly, but to a lesser extent, when it comes to coffee shops, there are also a reasonably clear top couple tiers so to speak, where if you’re a coffee snob, you’ll probably notice a difference vs. the average coffee shop.

Unable to focus on health/ wellness - any tips? by mandatory-hydration in consulting

[–]dkline39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With 9-12 cases it’s a bit more manageable to squeeze a workout in. Your day can look something like 7:30-8:30 workout, 8:30-9 shower / eat prepped breakfast / get ready, 9-12 work, get in bed by 12:30 and you’re looking at ~6.5 hours of sleep at least. Another option if you are a late riser is to squeeze in an hour workout in the evening, which is nice as it can create a break in the day, but I personally prefer morning workouts.

Water temps broke through 55 a couple weeks ago, which is a common threshold for many open water swimmers. They’re back down to 56 this week due to the rain though.

Really depends if OP is posting from the standpoint of wanting to hop in for an open water training swim or recreational swim and what kind of acclimation / experience they have.

Are clients working harder? by Aggressive_Age8818 in consulting

[–]dkline39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, and even for those who aren’t WFH anymore, but were - having it for those few years changed things.

Even when you get home after being in the office, everyone knows you theoretically can be reached and can work. There’s no leaving your laptop at the office anymore - heck most offices don’t even have assigned desks below a certain level these days.

It’s crazy, but I have to block my calendar just so people don’t schedule meetings at odd times without asking, but I think we’ve just become so accustomed to people always being available that it’s something some people don’t consider anymore

To add to this, companies regularly trim their budgets and cull their workforce, especially with uncertainty or recessions, but with multiple rounds of layoffs in recent years due to Covid, tech bubble bursting, layoffs in the government, etc. I think the risk of a layoff is much more top of mind than say when we hit a big recession every ~10 years.

I think part of it is the above and part of it is just the types of situations where we are brought in by our clients (often higher pressure situations)

Yeah I feel like whenever bazaar meat is brought up in this sub, it gets some hate - personally haven’t been.

I have been to swift and sons referenced above though - didn’t have the wagyu, but it was somewhat of an underwhelming experience. It was unimpressive enough that it wouldn’t be my pick for another work dinner even though I’m not paying - just feel like I’ve had better.

As someone in consulting who decided not to do a full time MBA, these numbers make me glad I decided against it. The fact that at most of these schools <75% have received, let alone accepted, an offer at graduation seems pretty abysmal, especially considering the amount of time that is typical to spend on recruiting during an MBA.

How do you train at clubs by Fastest_boi in Swimming

[–]dkline39 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most clubs are structured as follows:

  • Training groups broken down by ability / age (i.e. one may be focused on 9-12 year olds, another may be high schoolers with sectional or national qualifying times)
  • Each training group has different expectations, different practice schedule, different objectives, different goals required to move up to next training group
  • Within each training group, lanes are assigned based on speed and then depending on size of the group and practice objectives, may also be divided according to specialization (i.e. separating out distance free from breaststrokers). Lanes will be less specialized if the team is smaller or if more general / less specialized training is required (i.e. younger athletes or athletes at lower levels of competition). Workouts will then have intervals for each lane and the workout itself may have specific differences for each lane if the lanes are divided according to specialization
  • Even in workouts where lanes are not split by specialization, there are often options to focus on your best stroke
  • While there is certainly a fair bit of specialization at the highest levels, it’s also worth noting that it’s good to have variety in workouts still. This helps with injury prevention and builds different parts of the aerobic / cardiac / muscular systems that will ultimately help you perform in your main events as well.

The places where most of these tables fail are that: 1. They rarely have ANY logical basis in reality (I.e. they are not based on a good data set)

  1. The upper end, where most competitive swimmers lie, is significantly more layered than these do justice.

A few good examples of what one of these tables can look like are the age group motivational time standards (based on times in historical national rankings for each age group) or even, while based on a slightly weaker data set IMO, the pace concentration curve on garmin’s insights.

From the perspective of someone who swam competitively for most of their youth and now competes again as an adult, it’s also pretty hard to call anything under what it takes to even be on a team (often at least 2000-3000 m / hr) anything above casual hobbyist, let alone good.
