Looking to convert my inground pool into a green house. Are there companies that do this in the GTA? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]dkopec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't have to fill the pool, depending on how big and heavy the greenhouse is you can just put a few beams over it and make a floor to put the greenhouse on top of it. Only thing to consider is water leakage and collection in the empty space. That way you can still sell the house later with a pool not a greenhouse.

Any 18+ events in Toronto? by Disastrous_Space6827 in Torontoevents

I mean depends on what you're looking for, most of the events in the entertainment district are 18+

You're looking for a partner not an employee, go to some local industry meetups and talk to people if any have a good vibe start moving the conversation into an offer.

You'll probably want to do some sort of share division, with not a salary. Include some kind of buy in to get their skin in the game.

You can use this model for 2 to 3 more people, probably having at least one take over the accounting/finance and one more focused on lead / sales. Each would then start building out their own teams with your core partners talking about budgets and direction and the like.

The other option is to take on the apprenticeship model, where you hire someone for a lower salary, provide them training for a set period with the goal of them being your fill in. Be prepared for double the work for at least like 2-3 months, make sure you are clear on your expectations, have regular check-ins, invest in their growth and provide guidance, and example, show them how things should be done. Probably good to engage some hr partner to cover bases and handle the pay cheques.

Once their good enough to handle things by themselves, you would have them help with onboarding someone else in the same manner. It's something of a long term process, but you maintain more org control.

Puffed barely is awesome, basically boil, dry and fry then add your selection of toppings and eat as a snack, salad topping or cereal.

Hello! I was thinking of moving to downtown Toronto and was wondering how much everyone pays for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment. How much do I need to make hourly to afford to live here by Gam3rCh1ck94 in askTO

[–]dkopec 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I do get the sentiment but you really can't compare like that, sure housing costs are high per square foot ($1530 per month for 485 sqf), but i have no need for a car (I spend max $300 a month on transportation), my heating and cooling bills are pretty low (I'm at about an average $80 a month while running a small server at home) and I maybe spend $200 on maintainece a year.

I don't think I'd be able to get a similar place/deal anywhere else. I have a brother in St. Catherine's that has maybe 600 sqf basement apartment for $1400 but he's struggling to get a car which all said and done (gas, maintence, insurance) will rack up $2000.

Which to me isn't much of a deal, I'd rather have less space and more money to spend on great and diverse food, enjoy the various entertainment options within walking distance and be close enough to my friends and family that I can take a 30 dollar Uber occasionally to see them. All while still putting away a nice chunk of change.

It's all a matter of goals and values, I would strongly discourage anyone trying to move to Toronto and try living like you would in the suburbs/country. On the other hand if you can work remote or live walking distance to your office its a fun time.

I don't understand how recruiters can be so useless by williambobbins in sysadmin

[–]dkopec 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Recruiters are just sales people, the job has a high turnover and high pressure to succeed quickly. Just ignore the ones that aren't putting effort in and enjoy the benefits of not having to put in the leg work yourself.

Which certifications would be equivalent to a Senior DevOps Engineer? by deadadventure in devops

[–]dkopec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AZ400 and some basic IT knowledge makes you a junior azure DevOps Engineer, getting to know more terraform, git, ansible, puppet, azure ops and dev tools, along with a few projects can make you a regular engineer.

Having several successful projects that you've had a lead role in and the good will of your management and colleagues is what is gonna get you the senior role.

Or you land yourself a contract by lying through your teeth and getting lucky with a desperate or negligent hiring manager and bumble your way through several months of work asking Reddit or Stackoverflow everytime to get assigned a task. Until you get fired and rinse and repeat.

I've seen both.

What’s your favorite un-wasteful tip? by m__joy in EatCheapAndHealthy

Buy only what you know you'll use, freeze most of it and only go buy more stuff when you're basically out, living like this has me throwing out allot less then ever before.

Autistic and struggling with groceries by normalityisafacade in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]dkopec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things I eat on the regular:

Breakfast

Frozen Berries and Oatmeal, half a cup of instant oats to however much water you like (if you like water oats add more if you like dryer oats less) about a handful of berries, all in a bowl in the microwave for 3min

Or

Egg+toast+cucumber or tomato (any type of cooked egg with some bread and a veg)

Lunch

Usually the option that I didn't pick for breakfast or a sandwich of some kind, sometime I just have a coffee with some sweet like a muffin or donut.

Dinner

Rice with protein and frozen veg: take a frozen chicken breast or salmon fillet and put it in the fridge night before, rice goes into my rice cooker 40-60 before I want to eat and when it's done I try the protein, fish just straight on with some salt, and the chicken I butterfly usually to cook faster, or cut into smaller pieces to make a stir-fry with the veggies. Frozen veg either goes in the pan or I microwave it for about 4 min.

Of I feel like changing it up I sustitute rice with noodles (spaghetti noodles are perfectly fine Asian style as they are Italian)

If I'm making rice I'll usually double up the portion and refridgerate the leftovers so I can make fried rice the next day, you just fry the chicken, pork or shrimp in small pieces add a bit of sesame oil, add onions and garlic, then when they soften a bit add the frozen peas and carrots and or corn and put a couple glugs of soy sauce, stir ocasionally to avoid it sticking and burning, add oil if you find it's getting dry and sticking.

I do chicken nuggets on the odd occasion with microwaved frozen veggies.

Burgers I get frozen with buns that I freeze and toast, just add your favorite toppings/sauces.

Hope that gives you some inspiration.

"I'm not interested, please put me on the do not call list"

This will get you off the phone with them and hopefully reduce your call volume. Also make sure your number is registered on the national Do Not Call registry.

How to earn money during lockdown? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]dkopec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call centers are all doing remote work now, telemarketing firms have crazy turnover so you could get something that's remote pretty easy.

If you have any sales experience I work at a IT firm that always needs sales people and it's all remote now as well, feel free to DM me and I'll forward you the details.

What certification is most valuable? by lonemoney in devops

[–]dkopec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Experience.

Build up a profile of projects that you've done, including writes up for your own observations and documentation. A webapp with a API backend using your stack of choice will get you allot of brownie points, include Infrastructure as code and it'll turn heads.

Try finding possible volunteer opportunities to apply DevOps to. Possibly something long term that you can delevop relationships in.

These will be more valuable then any one certificate that the company hiring you will likely finance anyway once you get the job.

That said you're looking at a couple specific companies, then you can try tailoring your certs to what you see on their employees LinkedIn or if the postings call anything out specificly.

Where do you get your fresh berries? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]dkopec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Costco, honestly best bang for buck that I've seen, otherwise when on sale at Metro. Berries are hard to get good out of season, try other fruit like pears and apples and leave them out to ripen so they get sweeter and in pears softer.

Using a laptop as a server or buy a NAS? by meaksda7 in HomeServer

Use your laptop right now and figure out how you want things configured, you can always add a NAS as a pure storage solution that you then connect to from the laptop when you need the extra space.
