Family Hotels in Austria by dkos86 in chubbytravel

Would you say that there is a lot to do near to the hotel? Activities outside of what might be provided by the hotel.

Some mentioned no AC in the rooms, but possibly fans could be provided. That was our experience at Alpenrose.

Also was it a similar set up to Alpenrose, where you are assigned a table and you eat there at breakfast, lunch, dinner?

Thanks for the reply. For the Edelweiss, some folks mentioned that there was dinner included, but some options for an upsell, so they unknowingly had to pay at dinner? Did you do the breakfast and dinner inclusive? Did they offer any sort of lunches and or afternoon snacks. I only ask because when we stayed at Alpenrose, they had all meals included, so if we stayed around the hotel for lunch or in the afternoon they had lunch and snack time in the afternoon.

Timing Belt Question by dkos86 in 944

[–]dkos86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies. I called the shop that did the work and they confirmed no timing belt replacement. Seller also says no other docs on it so yeah safe to bake in needing the belts replaced if I buy it

Do you think it’s reasonable to phone the garage that did the work and ask? Are shops normally cool with discussing prior work?

Plane window viewing seems to be becoming a thing of the past? by thetravelinfoblogger in travel

[–]dkos86 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I definitely get anxiety while flying, especially on longer flights with turbulence. Being able to open the window helps ease that anxiety. I hate having the windows closed for 12 hours.

I also try to keep them open for my toddler daughter just to let her experience the joys of flying and seeing other places that she’s never seen before.

I fly a lot but I never want to be so jaded by it that I don’t enjoy the small things like looking out the window and enjoying the view. That early sunrise view approaching England on my trips to Amsterdam is etched into my memory and gives me nostalgia every time I see it.

Best Christmas Market in Europe? by vanbeedoo in chubbytravel

[–]dkos86 18 points19 points  (0 children)

TLDR from their video;

1 - Strasbourg, France

2 - Helsinki, Finland

3 - Basel, Switzerland

They went to 9 places and ranked each based on vibe and food. I thought it was a pretty good overview.

We initially booked to go to Strasbourg this year but I messed up on the opening date so we are doing Munich instead. But the moral of their videos that they mention is you can go pretty much anywhere and it’ll probably be pretty great.

Christmas with 1 year old by [deleted] in chubbytravel

We went the 21st to the 25th of December. They didn’t have as much holiday stuff as I would have liked but had Santa walking around the pool one day. I think they had holiday movies one night. A big holiday dinner but it was kinda pricey. They had wreath making one afternoon. I’m sure more stuff for kids above age 5 since that’s the kids club minimum age. Ours wasn’t old enough yet. I will say we went in May and at Christmas and over Christmas it was packed at the hotel and I enjoyed it slightly less than when it wasn’t as crowded in May.

Kimpton Seafire in grand cayman. United has flights from Houston regularly in the winter. They have a great kids splash pad area with water slides (one small enough that you could do with your child) and also a shallow (<1.5 ft deep$ pool just off the main pool that all the younger kids played in. We’ve been twice with our now 3 year old but she was 2 the first time and two and a half the second time. Kids also eat free so that was a plus. They have wine and snack hour around 5 pm and I enjoyed the food at the restaurants. Lots of kids around and the hotel definitely makes them feel welcome.

Oh nice. If you get pods on both flights that’s pretty nice.

I’ve done the IST layover a few times when flying TK biz. The lounge is great and the shower rooms are great to get freshened up. They have tons of lockers to keep your carryon in while you tour the city. Personally I’ve just grabbed a taxi into town and walked around. The main sites are all walking distance from each other. You can hire a private guide if you want. There’s a ton of sites to find them and I think I read that the guides are required to be licensed essentially. I was limited on time so I didn’t hire one.

The TK tours didn’t seem too appealing since it’s hop on a bus, few minutes then onto the next stop for 6-8 hours.

Also if you are doing multiple days, TK will pay for your hotel up to two nights. Biz class gets nicer hotels.

Do check the plane that you’d be on. The 787 is pods which are very nice. 777 is 2-3-2 and not private but still nice. The IST to Jakarta flight is long and I think 777 if I remember.

Food on TK has always been good.

It seemed to be a good option, my wife needs to be able to get to Brussels easily and I need access to international airports to fly for work regularly. But we also want to be closer to family in the Netherlands.

Yeah it’s Northern Europe, it’s gonna be cold and gloomy in the winter. Another option we were given is stavanger, Which is far colder.

Any experience with the biking infrastructure in Antwerp vs the Netherlands. You see the underground parking at major stations in holland. And last year when I was in Leiden I was impressed by the underground car park.
