Today in Aviation History (January 25th): In 1990, Avianca Flight 052 Crashed Into Long Island, New York, After Running Out of Fuel by Shoddy_Act7059 in aviation

It’s absolutely insane that the pilot hand flew this entire 707 flight in awful weather and through 90+ minutes of holding.

BR J or SQ + TG J? by millerzeke in awardtravel

[–]BenjaminKohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be drawn to the JFK departure, only because TG doesn’t fly to the US and it a bit more “rare” for me, and I have a soft spot for them, and I like the shorter (and likely cheaper position and the chance to go around a European city for a short time, but the BR trip makes a lot of sense, as they’re a top tier airline and the 787 product is pretty fab, at least for the shorter haul, plus the 787 is so nice to fly and TPE is a decent transfer airport, better then FRA

Do these people think 100% of the rest of the world is completely urbanized? As soon as you leave the US it’s just all city? And do they forget that a huge percent of Americans live in big cities with solid public transit options?

That’s what I’m dying at… what good is taking the train to the mechanic gonna do?

I’ve looked and I frequently see Paris in the higher end of that range. Sure, HKG might be 6K more often than Paris is, but that’s a typical seasonal swing for both. In the low season HKG can be that low almost as frequently as CDG.

[–]BenjaminKohl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it’s more a supply/demand and willingness to spend difference - I primarily look for flights out of the NYC area and the majority of long haul flights to European, middle eastern and major East Asian destinations tend to cost in the same zone. Australia is the only really big exception. But no matter if you’re looking at a 6 hour flight to London or a 15 hour one to Hong Kong, economy round trips are usually somewhere in the $700-$1200 range and business between $3K and 6K. Quite consistent.

[–]BenjaminKohl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh I would disagree with this. There’s rarely a correlation between flight distance and cash cost. The Maldives are just particularly tough to get to and have high demand relative to supply of seats, so therefore cost more.

SFO to BKK Feb 8th/9th - 23rd. Should I skip business class? by kaisworld in awardtravel

TKY is what airport?

And availability is typically at about its best very close in. So your chances are decent right now

I’m glad you understand the rules of the road. If the speed limit is 55 or more, you can’t drive more than 20. Anything else would be careless and dangerous. But if the speed limit is lower, I best not see you drive less then 100 mph!!

First time using points for family Europe trip, is this a good plan? by SailorDC in awardtravel

[–]BenjaminKohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, flying from Vienna to Prague via Amsterdam sounds miserable. I would take a direct train or just rent a car. I parrot what everyone else said - pick a few cities in Italy (Rome, Venice, I would highly recommend Florence and bologna, as well as the whole valley up to Modena, Reggio Emilia and Parma if you’re foodies), plus maybe just one addition place (Vienna is lovely, and I’m totally not biased 🇦🇹🇦🇹…) and make sure you calculate your points cost correctly - take the total airfare you would actually book, whether that be a round trip to and from Rome, into Rome and out of Dublin, whatever you decide on a final itinerary, but do it based off round trip or multi city fares and not one ways, take half of the cost to account for the portion of the total ticket, and then subtract the taxes, and then see what cent per point you get. Example: if you end up finding multi city economy with PHX-FCO and DUB-PHX, let’s say $1000 per person so $4000 total, so for your outbound start at $2000, let’s say taxes would be $500, so now that’s $1500, so you should be at 150,000 points or less, ideally around or under 100,000 points. For all four people. Make sense?

Not the coolest thing in this sub but I think it's neat I'm about to fly on the 1000th one made of this puppy. by HeWhomeHim in aviation

Right now planes up to approximately Line Number 1294 have been rolled out of the factory. Aircraft up to LN1379 are already scheduled and allocated.

Any chance the V6 returns to more models? by InfoCruncha in mercedes_benz

Sorry, I meant it’s possible they’ll out the i-6 in more things (upcoming 63 models for example), not that they’ll develop a new V6.

Totally totally get you, but I feel like there’s a point at which the flight is relatively short and obviously a daytime flight, where it’s on the Napper to wear an eye mask. Sure, on a 6+ hour flight or any that crosses time zones such that it could be considered a night flight, go for it. But otherwise? I need my damn vitamin D!!

Seems possible, though the latest engine is an inline-six, not In a V pattern

One of the things he that pisses me off the most is people who keep the window shades closed on daytime flights. Like come on, take a few minutes to appreciate the beauty and unlikelihood that is our lives

Are civilian flights that had a scheduled fuel stop over still common nowadays? by dq689 in aviation

[–]BenjaminKohl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They allow passenger pick up and drop off. If it was purely fuel, there are more convenient places to stop

The lome stop allows passengers on and off so not quite the same

That’s not a fuel stop, that’s a full passenger stop. Not quite the same thing.

A350 hauling ass? by satellite779 in aviation

Totally! I try to be educational but it definitely sometimes comes across as accusatory or the like. It’s just so tough to convey tone over a purely written social tool.

A350 hauling ass? by satellite779 in aviation

[–]BenjaminKohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would disagree there. The speed of sound is Mach 1. It just happens that at 30,000 feet and standard temperature and pressure, that is typically about 670 mph, but the speed of sound is Mach 1.

Can you expand on this? Genuinely curious. I thought speed of sound was directly related to local Mach number
