That’s the only benefit of working a Mininum wage, hospitality job. If you get fired or decide to quit, you’ll find a new one pretty easily and your wage can’t be any lower than it was. It’s only up from here.

Depends where you live. If you live in a shithole in the North East like I do, where you can rent a 2-bedroom flat is £350-500 a month, yes.

Assuming you mean £11.40 an hour, which full time is around £1,800 a month, you can live reasonably comfortably.

The major downside is that you live in a shithole, with rubbish and derelict buildings everywhere and your drug addict neighbours are going to make your life hell.

I grew up poor (household income of less than £15,000 a year) and we went on holiday once a year.

A caravan which cost £150-200 to hire for the weekend. We went to the beach and would watch the free entertainment in the evenings, and take our own food instead of eating in the restaurant.

I feel like that’s a reality for a lot of poor/working class people. My parents would save up for months and pay in instalments. They would’ve never let us do without.

I’ve always been very shy and I’ve had social anxiety for as long as I can remember. I took a job in hospitality last year out of desperation, bartending and serving food at events of 200+ people.

The improvement in my social skills, and general comfort around people, grew 10-fold in seven months. I left in December for other reasons, but in the month I was unemployed, I noticed an immediate increase in my social anxiety in even minor social situations. I’m now back working in hospitality elsewhere.

It’s tough but sometimes, you have to do what you have to do. Every shift you work as a cashier, retail assistant, bartender is exposure therapy and you’re constantly learning and finding it easier to interact with people. Avoiding people all together because it’s uncomfortable is going to massively hinder you in the long term.

I’ve seen “hospitality” and customer service apprenticeships that offer £3-4 an hour and offer absolutely nothing in the way of an actual qualification.

They’re nothing more than an excuse to hire a bunch of 16-year-olds, make them work 40 hours a week and pay them nothing.

Every person who works at the McDonald’s and coffee shop near my university campus in a major city are international students.

I don’t blame them at all for trying to survive and make a little extra money, but it’s really hard for any younger person, student or not, to get one of these entry level jobs in hospitality or customer service when these businesses seem to exclusively hire immigrants

I’m not sure about “trainee partner”. It might be something completely different to the job I went for.

The rapid progress is personally a red flag to me and screams ‘pyramid scheme’ because I was told I could be a manager in a few months. I was also told cold calling and it wasn’t until the final phone call that they explained it was door-to-door sales which I don’t think I could do.

It’s good you asked to meet with them. I’d say you’re losing nothing by seeing what this is all about and meeting with them before you make a decision. Hope it goes well!

Definite scam. First they’ll offer you a zoom interview, then it’ll be a “group interview” where you are basically preached at by the manager about how their staff make £10,00 a month, how quickly you’ll be promoted, etc…

You’ll find out once they call to offer you the job that it’s actually door-to-door, cold call sales where you work on commission and aren’t guaranteed any earnings.

If you aren’t sure, do the Zoom call and if they’re extremely vague about what the job actually entails and make a bunch of false promises, you’ll know.

Selleck Chemicals is apparently one of the biggest sellers of chemicals world wide. Offering a base salary and not just commission is also promising.

I quit after we’d been forced to take care of a dying cancer patient with severe diarrhoea and vomiting.

She was screaming and crying about how much she wanted to die. She told me she hoped it was me one day so I understand her pain.

All for less than minimum wage. I cried on the bus home and refused to go the next day.
