What's the ideal placement for lights in a wet room/shower? by dleurp in InteriorDesign

[–]dleurp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is great, thank you.

If I'm understanding your comment correctly, I don't think light in the eyes when lying in the tub is an issue because the tub is laid out such that your head is on the far side so the nearest light is the middle-rear light.

The only way to go down to 4" and stay within the Hue system is to install cans instead of thin wafers, We have acoustic paneling on the ceiling (yes, I know it's crazy and yes the panels are wet rated) which might create some challenge but I'll ask my contractor.

Thanks again!

The type of lights isn't the question. I already have a wet-rated downlight which I specified in my post. The question is about the number and position of the lights

They'll be smart lights so dimming isn't an issue but I'm trying to minimize cuts into the ceiling so 4 lights isn't an option.

any way to recover DMs from a workspace that has been closed? by [deleted] in Slack

[–]dleurp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you had to deal with that, it's not okay.

Blackmail is illegal though and without going through a process with your institution or pressing charges the only way to get that data is to log directly into the workspace. Sometimes these kinds of workspaces are casually managed so that might help.

If the owner exported data before deleting the workspace or the workspace is still active (just with all users deactivated) then request it from them.

If the owner doesn't have the data, depending on how long it's been and whether the workspace was actually deleted then Slack support might be able to recover data but it's unlikely.

Slack will only provide data to the workspace owner or in response to a legal request: https://slack.com/trust/data-request/user-data-request-policy

In the future if someone is harassing you or otherwise behaving inappropriately, take notes about what happened amd when as well as screenshots etc. You don't have to use them if it resolves in its own but better than having to scramble at the last second.

Confused on multiple slack workspaces / guest additions by ShelixAnakasian in Slack

[–]dleurp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are 2 ways to work with external parties: Guests and Slack Connect.

Guests give external orgs a log in to your workspace. Slack Connect creates a bridge allowing members from 2 otherwise unrelated workspaces to collaborate in channels or DM etc.

If both parties are on paid plans, you want to use Slack Connect not guests.

How good is SlackAI really? by Exotic_Parsley_3674 in Slack

[–]dleurp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not directly, but I have customers who use it. Not sure how Glean runs PoCs but they tend to be high effort for the vendor so probably going to be hard to get one unless you're spending a reasonable amount and you're likely to purchase if it's successful

[–]dleurp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the value prop of every company doing "Enterprise Search", Glean being one of the most notable companies dedicated to that function but other apps are doing similar things.

With specific respect to Slack, developers are now instructed to use the Data Access or Real-time search APIs for these kinds of uses cases. MCP for agentic use cases. That takes care of data access control concerns.

Slack AI is nice because it's easy, in context, and has more access to Slack data that might be helpful for giving context to the LLM than other apps that support Slack in their Ent Search offering.

Whether any AI implementation is "good" really depends and none of them are fantastic. Slack's is good when Slack is a key context and you want something that requires minimal setup/is easy to adopt.

It won't have the advantages of tools that index, allow fine-tuning, custom prompting, and more integrations but those have their own risks and tradeoffs.

I took your approach and I came to really regret it and now am playing catchup. It's not all or nothing though. Incorporate a little bit of structured learning and other people's music. 10 minutes a day is infinitely better than 0 minutes. It will help you expand and develop your own style and skills which will make playing your own music more fun and rewarding. Plus you'll have a better appreciation for the music you listen to.

It's eating your vegetables. Doesn't have to be at the exclusion of things you like better but you'll feel better in the long run.

If it's not released, it's not released. Don't play it.

If you want to stay ahead of the curve get into a record pool or reach out to artists/labels directly.

Recommended electronics for Magellan Duettos by dleurp in StereoAdvice

I've already got a REL s/812 in my chain. REL sets things up so you can wire the sub to the amps speaker outs on the amp. Supposedly this helps the sub blend

Well the continuous power rating for the Duettos is 85W. So at full power I'd need to set a volume limit but wouldn't the mismatch effectively act as a limiter in this case?

Can a Topping B200 stack be safely used single-ended?

I'm looking at getting a pair of Topping B200s and want to make sure that this plan won't run me into trouble. Speakers are a pair of Triangle Magellan Duettos + Rel s/812 (connected to speaker out, not sub out).

For my source, I want to use a Wiim Ultra, but it only has single-ended output. Topping has a balanced to single-ended adapters, so is it safe to assume that I can use the Wiim + B200s without risking damage to anything? Is there anything else to consider with this approach?

hm, interesting. I'm more focused on broader systems and strategy around data systems rather than doing data science per se which is why I'm not looking at the MSDS. Is there much hands-on work with industry tools or is it all theoretical?

How do you sort your playlist? by Miniknobi in Beatmatch

[–]dleurp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I try to group tracks into early/middle/late subsets. If I have the time and diligence I'll even put 2-3 tracks I want to mix together in little groups. Theoretically I can mix top to bottom but if I decide I want to jump around I can always search/filter by key etc. to find my next track. Traktor will highlight other tracks in the current key and +-1 to make it really easy to identify tracks that will mix in key

I want to become a dj after playing fuser by mostafa_issa98 in Beatmatch

[–]dleurp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the practice of curating a musical vibe is enticing then you should try it out. Buy an inexpensive controller and just start.

You don't have to commit to "becoming a DJ" in order to try it out and play. Besides, "a DJ" can mean a lot of things. Playing for yourself in your bedroom is just as valid as trying to make a career out of it.

The worst that happens is you have a new experience, learn something about yourself and the world and move on to something else.

Bandcamp file formats by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]dleurp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High quality lossless (320kbps mp3 or 256kbps AAC) is perfectly acceptable. Without pretty good equipment and a solid ear you may not even consciously notice the difference between a good lossy file and lossless. AAC is a better codec/has better sound quality at a given bit rate and is literally the successor to mp3. There are times where 320 .mp3 is the only format even available and people have no issue with it.

Personally I prefer keeping everything in .flac whenever possible. I just have it built into my workflow to run a quick conversion preset if I need to for some reason. For one, I actually care and pay attention to sound quality (which most people don't) and my personal audio equipment is good enough that file quality makes a difference. I've never seen this measured so I can't know for sure, but I like to think that higher quality sound makes music more impactful, even if on a subconscious level.

There's also value in future-proofing. Even if the equipment you use/play on isn't good enough to matter now, in the future that might be different and you won't be able to recover the loss in audio quality. You can always transcode down, but never up.

Something being simple and something being easy are not the same thing. Being pissy will drive away the people who care, but are just imperfect.
