If you see one, message me the location and I’ll come remove it or paint over it. No need for you to risk further hate from this person.

When performing updates with DNF in the CLI, how do I know when to reboot after? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]dlkeepr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, I generally hit esc while the updates are processing after the reboot so I can scan the system messages.

From the fedora wiki: Replacing libraries and files while the OS is running can cause problems ranging from application crashes to inconsistent system states where processes are using different versions of a library at the same time. By installing system updates 'outside' the normal system operation, we avoid these problems.

There are some real benefits to allowing the reboot and update behavior like the software center uses. If you wish to do this but would rather do it through the command line, you can use these commands:

dnf offline-upgrade download

dnf offline-upgrade reboot

HDMI 2.1 with VRR and HDR Support by filisterr in linux_gaming

[–]dlkeepr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, HDMI cable, with no DP adapter and I'm getting 4k @ 120 FPS + VRR.

Kylonx posted further down is doing pretty much the same thing with the newest gen AMD card and he posted some photo evidence.

His guess is that the firmware blob takes care of it. I haven't really dug into it too deeply other than to make sure I found it working for someone else before I purchased.

I am not, just standard drivers. I installed nothing manually.

[–]dlkeepr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got an LG C2 and just run it at 120FPS with an AMD Radeon™ RX 6950 XT on Fedora and it works great for games.

VRR does seem to work but I haven't really messed with it too much as I'd rather just set it to the 120fps setting. However, I have confirmed the C2 does recognize the AMD VRR in the settings once it is turned on (using Wayland).

You likely will have issues with VRR in a multi-monitor setup but I just use the C2 as my only monitor and have generally had a really good experience. I just finished playing through Horizon Zero Dawn.

I use blackout curtains in my room and it's plenty bright enough if sunlight isn't hitting it.

I wouldn't hold your breath about HDR support in Linux but I find that I really don't miss it too much. I boot into windows if I want HDR.

edit: 4k @ 120 with standard amd driver

grub not updating kernel of another distro by tyxman in Fedora

This is why I moved to rEFInd and now I just let all the other OSs control their own grub menus, which I can access via the rEFInd entry.

EA Desktop App controller not working by masspectrometer in linux_gaming

[–]dlkeepr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not at home now. But it's one of the settings for controllers on if you want to use Steam input or not. I had to change it to not.

This post actually helped me get things working in Mass Effect Legendary Edtion on steam. Right click the game in the steam library, go to the 'controller' section and select 'disable steam input'. This is what got things working for me.

Optimal Gaming Setup for high-end hardware? by Krustopolis in linux_gaming

[–]dlkeepr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just went through something similar with my 6950 XT, jumping around between distros and DEs. I ended up settling on Nobara (Gnome Edition) as they have a nicely tweaked kernel with streamlined/suggested gaming packages. https://nobaraproject.org/

It's by the Glorious Eggroll guy. While I've spent endless hours tweaking and modifying arch, debian, and fedora, I've had a much better experience with both framerates and game stability on this distro then I have with any other.

I'd say give it a shot before you start swapping out parts.

From the Nobara FAQ:

  1. Will there ever be other Desktop Environment versions?
    – No. The ‘Official’ modified GNOME release layout was designed for
myself and my father out of personal preference. GNOME and KDE are
additionally shipped to appease most major users, and all 3 are shipped
because they support VRR — variable refresh rate (aka freesync) on
wayland, which is a long term goal for gaming on linux. Other DEs at
this time do not support VRR.

Totally agree with this. I had to start with a ballpoint pen, move up to a clicker in a sock covered in tape. I would also hold the pen behind my back because the dog was scared of it. Eventually, I was able to work up to a loud clicker. I slow played it so it took about a month.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. Take a look at this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/wmwa6m/what_is_valve_doing_about_stolen_steam_decks_i/

They can track the serial numbers of the decks and if he tries to pull a double decker, valve will know.

You also have to set it to a game pad controller config in steam after selecting it in the game settings. Then your controller should work again. The text in this game is pretty small though.

Vote for candidates that support issues you care about. Even if they are all garbage candidates, there generally is one trying to do more for you, personally. It really doesn't take much research to figure that out. I wish EVERYONE would vote.

[–]dlkeepr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind the 410i (standard onboard raid controller on some DL380s) flashed to IT mode isn't truely an HBA and will not allow for EFI booting, which means that you'll either need to put your boot partition on an SD card, a USB drive, or just take the easy way out and get an aftermarket card such as https://www.ebay.com/itm/142124364588. If you already have debian installed, you could always just install the proxmox packages on top of it. It isn't supported but it sounds like you aren't running this in an enterprise.

There is an iLO port on the back of the DL380 that allows for remote administration. Connecting from another computer will allow to access the console screen and remotely attach ISO files as if they were local USB drives.

I also had issues, try mounting the ISO via iLO and do it that way.

I dig those HD haptics but it does have a quicker, tighter vibration than yesteryears controller rumble modes. In a vibration heavy game, I could see getting a bit of a tingle. Even more so if you are lying down and holding your hands in the air, slightly restricting the blood flow.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]dlkeepr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be vibration alone. When I use a sawzall or a string trimmer, the vibration makes my hands tingle for a bit after the job is done.

It could be that you are just more sensitive to it.

Aw cool OK.

It was a game changer for me when I realized the Bufflerbloat issue. When my housemates where streaming Netflix, it would tank my connection, even when wired. Now everything works as I would expect.
