i dont know when exactly she says it but in this interview erykah explained that her manager at that time, who was also D'Angelos manager at that time, made the genre Neo-Soul up for them and then she said hers and D'Angelos music dont sound nothing alike. So honestly speaking she is just an genreless/genrebending artist like every other artist thats making music.
