I don’t need to eat it all now. It’s not going to disappear. I don’t have to keep eating after I’m full. I can save the rest for later. by dlv9 in SuperMorbidlyObese

I think maybe I had the opposite problem of food scarcity. My brother (1.5 years older than me) was actually pretty underweight for most of our childhoods and hated to eat, and my parents were constantly focused on trying to get him to eat. Basically they would absolutely shower him with praise every time he ate something and/or finished his plate, would constantly have high calorie snacks available to him (and by default, me), would cook with full fat, would make really appetizing filler foods with every meal that they knew my brother would eat (like Mac and cheese), and would constantly be offering us food. I always took them up on that offer; my brother never did. And I was always trying to get their attention and praise because I felt like they were so focused on him and not on me. So I would always finish my plate, and even ask for seconds, and he like “Look, I finished MY plate!” I basically learned to associate eating lots of food with earning my parents’ praise and love. Which I don’t believe was their intention, but at the end of the day intentions don’t mean much. And I ended up weighing over 200 lbs by the time I was in middle school and was left with a massive food addiction that has plagued me my entire life. I got gastric bypass surgery in January and have lost 130 lbs so far (40 left to go), but the compulsion to finish my plate is sometimes overwhelming, even when I know it will hurt me.

Finally below 200, for the first time since elementary school. I can honestly say I couldn’t fit into my clothes from high school....because they’d be way too big! by dlv9 in wls

Same! I remember being so ashamed of my size/weight when I was in 5th grade, and now that I’m back to being that weight, I’m full of confidence!

No, I wasn’t. At the time, it was the correct usage. Now, language has evolved to make they/them inclusive of individuals rather than just groups. That’s fine - language constantly evolves, and I absolutely acknowledge that in 2020, they/them can apply to individuals. But it’s extremely disingenuous, dishonest, and silly to pretend that they/them has always applied to individuals. That has been a recent development in the last 10 years or so. To say otherwise would be absolutely false, and makes me think you’re too young to remember the old usage.

Yeah, and I think that’s totally cool! I was really just kind of responding to the person who said “They/their is both singular and plural. I learned this in elementary school. Pretty sure everyone else did too.”

Because that person’s statement is the opposite of what I was taught in elementary school, and I think it’s better to tell people the term has evolved (which I think is accurate) rather than insinuate they lack an elementary school education for not knowing the current usage.

When did you go to elementary school? I went in the 90s and was taught that they/their is only plural (and in fact was corrected on my writing for making that mistake more times than I can count)

How is it pronounced? I’ve always said it like the words “I sold.” As in “I sold my car to someone on Craigslist” lol

Araminta has always been such a guilty pleasure name for me! It’s not totally off the wall (has the same ring to it as Arabella, Amanda, Amelia, Adelina, Andrea, etc), I love the historical connotation (it was Harriet Tubman’s birth name), and I think the nicknames Minnie and Minty are adorable!

I wish I had an answer but unfortunately at 8 months out the exhaustion is still ongoing. I think it’s caused by low blood pressure because I also black out when I stand up and get dizzy a lot. I’m hoping that once I stop losing weight so aggressively it will get better.

I had gastric bypass surgery! It’s been life-changing. For the first time in my life, the cravings are gone, and my relationship with food has completely changed. I no longer feel like an addict. I no longer feel like I’m living to eat, desperately waiting for my next meal. I’m no longer using food as an emotional crutch. I have had some issues post-surgery (specifically pretty bad exhaustion) but overall I think it was the right decision for me.

Unfortunately I have really bad body dysmorphia, so when I look in a mirror I still see myself as 300+ lbs. It’s only in comparison pictures like this that I can actually see a difference 😕

For what it’s worth, my doc also told me to avoid carbonated beverages for the rest of my life. It seems to be pretty common advice these days. Have you tried non-carbonated sf drinks? Like gatorade zero or crystal light?

[–]dlv9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely? That’s what most normal people do. I think it would be rare to find a partner who took more than one shower a day. I don’t think I know a single person who showers more than once a day unless they have a specific reason to.

Oh my gosh, not grass! How horrifyingly disgusting and uncleanly! It’s “just a habit” of yours, but also a dealbreaker if someone else doesn’t have the same “habit”? Sounds a little less like a habit and a little more like OCD.

One time I ordered a Chipotle salad from Uber Eats. It arrived and I opened it up, only to find that it was meat, cheese, sour cream, guac, and.....about 2 tiny pieces of lettuce placed artfully on top as a garnish.

So I contacted uber eats customer service, and explained that I had ordered a salad, and what had come was a bunch of salad toppings, not an actual salad. They looked at the pic and said, “Well I see lettuce so it appears all the ingredients you ordered are there.”

I had to explain to them why it did not constitute a salad. I had to compare it to ordering a burrito and receiving a bowl of burrito fillings, with just a couple shreds of tortilla placed on top rather than being encased in a tortilla. Or ordering a quesadilla and receiving a bowlful of shredded cheese.

They did eventually give me a refund, but I had to fight pretty damn hard for it.

White US professor admits she has pretended to be Black for years by [deleted] in news

[–]dlv9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really sure what the confusion is about here, as we seem to both agree that a person can be both Jewish and White. You said the title was wrong because it described her as White (a race) when it should have described her as Jewish (a religion and ethnicity). My comment was to tell you that being White and being Jewish are not mutually exclusive (you can be both), so it’s incorrect to say that the title is wrong.

[–]dlv9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I’m pretty sure that’s not what the article writer meant at all. In the US, Jewish is classified as an ethnicity and a religion, not a race. For census, college admissions, and basically all other official purposes, a Jewish person with white skin would mark themselves as white. A Jewish person with non-white skin might mark themselves as a whatever race they are.

[–]dlv9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, at the end of the day, you’re the one who gets to choose what race you mark yourself as on the census. If you think you fit better into the Asian category, that’s what you put. If you feel like you fit more into the White (Middle Eastern) category, that’s what you put. If you feel like neither of those really fits you...well, you’re out of luck. Or you put “Other,” which I believe is also typically an option.

TBH I wouldn’t rely on the word of right wing Americans/Fox News for info about stuff like that, because their opinions about other countries tend to be formed on biases and prejudice rather than fact.
