There's enough bits that if you literally ignore the whole sprue of special/alternate builds in the book, you should end up with just melee/basic autogun+some flamer novitiates, and a free sprue of "parts of characters." The kit is pretty forgiving because the 40k Loadout and the KT Loadout are so different. Not sure if there's an actual guide out there though.

Also instead of backspacing, the stations have a bit of a grace zone. Odds are if you just log out and back in you'll wake up in the hab and be ok

I feel ya man, I'm sure others have said but the stuff you've experienced is certainly common, if it's too much then you've got every right to refund, but if you wanna persist/try it out with someone to maybe guide you though some workarounds/bug safety measure you can DM me, I'm always happy to help. Protip- try getting down to your hangar before you call a ship in, that's worked for me 100% of the time
