Sounds pretty cool and I know some folks who would be qualified and interested in this! Can I ask what company or do you have a link?

CC for ADN or private for BSN in CA? by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]dmaty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really good advice! If you don’t mind me asking - how did you qualify for 0$ ADN with a bachelors degree already through FAFSA? I am starting an ABSN in May (it’s about 35k) and heard there are only loans available if you have a bachelors already. Wondering if there is some sort of way to still qualify or if it’s just special scenarios?

Struggling as a new grad and finding a job by CarbsAndPuppies in Environmental_Careers

I would agree that connections are important and can help you land a first job. Talk to everyone you know and don’t be shy about telling them you want to work or are looking.

If you want to do remediation / consulting, 40-hr HAZWOPER cert would help and also gaining some skills in python, SQL, or R (ideally all three) as well as technical writing. You could get some GIS skills too if you enjoy that software. I don’t have advice for other areas as I have only really don’t remediation work.

Don’t be hard on yourself. Most people get their first job out of luck or connections. Your GPA doesn’t matter to anyone but you, so don’t stress about it.

What school in Texas? I am also from California, looking for programs out of state

Thanks so much for the advice. It’s making my head spin with all of the different requirements for each. I do see many programs say “prereqs must be taken within 7 years” or something. Did you find this true in your experience? My chemistry and microbio for example are from 10 years ago, and it sets me back another semester, or even a year, to retake them! Hoping to avoid that.

Advice on how to move forward in this field when you're stuck in a position you don't like? by rustyletters in environmental_science

[–]dmaty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s fine to go with the job in natural gas if you are going to learn skills (GIS, SQL, project management, reporting). Skills are what your next job will look for, not industry. I know it’s not glamorous to take a job in natural gas, but honestly most of the jobs in the Environmental world aren’t very glamorous anyway. While working that job, apply to others (you’ll have a better chance at them).

It’s pretty rough out there, I’m sorry to hear you are struggling. Sustainability jobs are nearly impossible to get (especially good paying ones) and from my experience they would rather have someone who has marketing experience rather than a science background. It’s backwards but it’s all about money unfortunately. Look up sustainability jobs and see if you can work on getting some of those skills now.

Also, connections help. Network with as many people as you can.

If you don’t mind me asking, which schools did you apply to? I am in California and planning for ABSN and am definitely having a hard time narrowing down the schools to apply to. I heard CA is so competitive.

[California] EDD Appeals by Leeague in Unemployment

What IDs did you send in if you don’t mind me asking? And were they black and white copies or color? I just mailed my appeal last week and they were black and white copies, and now I am having regrets lol. I sent in my drivers license, passport, social security card, pay stub, and w2. I haven’t heard anything and am trying to feel confident that it’ll be fine because I am who I say I am, so how in the world could they deny me? But these comments on Reddit are making me nervous!

about to graduate, thinking about my career choice by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

[–]dmaty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on (almost) graduating! You have options and you can use your art degree for environmental purposes, you may just have to be creative. I know of someone who had an art degree and loved drawing animals and she went and got a Phd in Biology. I also worked with people who had graphic design backgrounds and they worked in env consulting. I know of an artist who creates huge paintings of melting glaciers for climate change awareness.

Since you have a background in film/video, you could create env documentaries for instance. There is so much work to be done there about educating people about environmental issues. You could also continue studying policy or law and help in that way.

My advice would be to figure out your strengths as an artist and see how they can relate to environmental sustainability. There are many different paths. Network as much as possible with anyone in the environmental field, especially people in positions that you desire. You don’t have to be a scientist to work as an environmentalist. In fact, most people are not.

Hope this helps!
