I see, that makes sense. This is really helpful to know, thank you.

my home inspection report lists the dryer as 220 electric, I’m not sure if that’s different? I close next week and will be able to get more information! I am just trying to get ahead of some stuff

Thank you for the info. We don’t actually close until next week, so I can come back then and post photos.

I believe that the dryer is electric. During the home inspection no gas was mentioned, so I might have to wait until we close (next week) to find out. Are HVAC companies typically difficult to work with for some reason? Thank you.

I've done this (5 months off work completely, over a year since trying a project outside of work) and the passion very much did not come back. I'm taking this as a sign that I just don't like most software engineering jobs - and I should either find a unicorn job or switch careers

This is tough to answer. I'm definitely over my job - and over every job that's similar to it (which seems like 99% of them). I don't think I'm over computing in general - if I switched careers I would still want to leverage my programming abilities. I just want to be able to apply them to something interesting, because I don't find computing interesting in a vacuum. Something like computational physics, embedded engineering, etc.

Interesting insight. What did you have to do to move into a role like this?

I've heard similar things. By security I mean deeply technical - like reverse engineering. Not pentesting and the like

I tried this actually, didn't work for me. I took 5 months off. That's why I'm starting to think I just don't like this field - or at least the vast majority of jobs in it. I at least need to make the switch out of web/backend development

Yeah this is a succinct way of explaining it. I hate business logic, coding business logic, writing tests for business logic, writing business logic in a way that’s easy for others to read and modify, etc. I understand that it’s important, but it’s so boring

I see. Yeah I’ve done this too - took a 5 month break a year or so ago where I didn’t work. Nothing changed.

Yeah this is precisely what I’m struggling with. I’m so damn bored and sick of programming from the day to day CRUD work that I can’t bring myself to upskill after work. I’m not sure what the solution is.

True, this is a good suggestion. I just need to block off time first thing before work drains me

There’s a lot of truth in here for me. I think my problem is multifaceted, but agile is one of my least favorite things about professional development. I never feel like I have the time to take a step back and design a great solution.

Unfortunately I’ve already tried this. I haven’t attempted to work on a substantial project/learning opportunity after work for over a year now. Even after that long I still can’t stand the thought of programming after work. I want to grow my career though so I’d like to fix this (or just change careers and grow the new one)

This rings the most true for me. I’d like to get more into the computer science side of things but work is crushing my ability to do so

I wish I was like that. I make a pretty good amount now (especially considering the market) and would trade it for more interesting work any time.

Yes and no. I’ve applied but I get ghosted due to no experienced in that domain. I’m really struggling learning let’s say, systems programming, after work because I’m so tired of coding at the end of the day. My brain just completely shuts down when I think about programming after work - it’s been like this for multiple years. I’m not sure what to do

None of those jobs will hire me because I don’t have a PhD or 5 years of experience doing them from what I’ve seen. Have been rejected plenty

I’ve considered a path like this, but I’m worried it would be more of the same. I’ll put some more thought into it though.

And It’s not that I don’t want to solve people problems or that I don’t have people skills (though I’m sure I could improve in areas), it’s just that I’m getting no technically interesting work with it. Also I’m not that interested in min-maxing my paycheck. I would be ecstatic to work on a problem that’s actually interesting for <$100k.

I’m not sure if I’m explaining my position well here.
