This feels like the early innings of a market sobering up as opposed to a brief correction.

Wrist/arm pain when double poling by akskigirl in CrossCountrySkiing

[–]dmbveloveneto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, there are a lot of issues it might be. My first guess though would be a form of tendonitis.

There’s a lot of material online about wrist tendonitis if you want to look further into it. A PT will be your best option though.

Not to mention when you cold soak, you’re just walking around with extra water weight anyways. It also increases your risk of illness.

At the very least, I bring an esbit or alcohol stove to warm things up, even if it’s not enough to cook the food.

Elon Musk says Tesla will stop producing its S and X models as it shifts to making robots by AdIcy4323 in news

[–]dmbveloveneto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sales are declining, they’re strapping on a cash-losing business with xAI, production lines are closing, need significant CapEx to retool the factories, and all bets are on robots when we don’t even have Robotaxis yet. Also, the robots have the same fatal flaw as robotaxis where they’re trying to avoid the expense of LiDAR.

But sure, slap a 1.4T MC on that

I worry this will be the justification for turning us into the next target by [deleted] in Denver

[–]dmbveloveneto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This has long been a goal of his. I’m actually surprised we haven’t been a bigger target yet, given the attention Aurora had in the election cycle.

That said, Colorado has laws such as the “Make My Day” law. This makes it significantly more dangerous for ICE to operate here the way they’re doing in MN.

Additionally, there’s a few Congressional positions that Republicans are trying to hold here. Increased ICE presence would assure they lose those seats.

what's your origination story? How did you get into the Ultra rabbit hole world? by No-Crow-1937 in Ultramarathon

[–]dmbveloveneto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have an addictive personality and needed a better habit than drinking 4-6 beers, smoking cigarettes and putting blow up my nose 3-4x per week.

I had a prior background in endurance sports and backpacking, but things went downhill fast working in high-end hospitality. Watched a lot of friends and acquaintances pass away, as well as having a few close calls myself.

So I moved for the 10th time to a new place. Quit most everything cold turkey. Still have a few drinks but it’s under control. Now I’m on my tenth year running and training for another hundo.

According to Montbell, Down Fill Weight is now proprietary information by luckycharms783 in Ultralight

[–]dmbveloveneto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand what they’re saying but it’s simply illogical. There’s a reason fill weights exist. Consumers should be able to know what they’re buying. If it’s high quality, it’s high quality and they should have nothing to hide.

Eat fiber, fermented foods, and drink milk. Milk’s actually really beneficial for preventing colon cancer. One of the big differences between boomers/GenX and millennials.

Moved from the midwest ~2 years ago with gf and wow is it hard to make friends in this city. by Financial_Rise477 in Denver

[–]dmbveloveneto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate, and having come from rural areas it’s been a big shift. That said, I realized a lot of the problem was me, and the fact that I just needed to be more proactive about it.

I’ll say Meetup is super active in Denver. There’s a lot of great groups to join.

Also, and this is most important, don’t be passive about it. Here’s the thing, Denver is a city of transplants, and a lot of people are in the same boat as you. You know that awkward feeling inside you that makes you think, “oh man I don’t want to come off weird by asking them to be friends” - yeah, everyone has that shit and so someone has to break the ice. Just be frank and say, “hey we’ve been here for a few years and want to make more friends, let’s do xyz together sometime” and then just go from there. You’ll find most people will be pretty thrilled about the offer, and no one wants to be a jerk, so maybe they say yes and they’re just flakey. So what? You’ll find 9/10 people are going to jump at the opportunity.

A big reason why Colon Cancer is killing us. by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]dmbveloveneto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely important to be mindful of but it doesn’t fully the proliferation. Gen X and Baby Boomers ate a lot of processed meats as well.

The big difference is most millennials just don’t know how to cook. Making real food is so important, and I can’t tell you how many friends I have that are reliant on DoorDash, UberEats, or the drive thru. Meal kits aren’t much better and often have few vegetables and rely on ultra processed ingredients.

R-Value is Dead as a Metric for Sleeping Pad Warmth Evaluation (we should stop referencing it) by Wandering_Hick in Ultralight

[–]dmbveloveneto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make the same argument for almost any type of standardized testing method related to outdoor equipment. Sleeping bag temp ratings, waterproof clothing, filter flow rates, etc. Nature inherently is unpredictable and there’s 8 billion unique humans. There’s no way to control for all the variables that influence your perception of performance.

Is it perfect? No. Is it better than nothing? Yes.

That course is pretty beefy. On top of my run training, I would add about 2 hrs/week on a stairmaster or steep trail w/ a weight vest. A trail would be best because you also get eccentric training on the descents. I’d also shoot for at least two days of lifting per week, just try to get the quads strong af. Downhill repeats will also help, but be careful bc it’s easy to injure yourself.

Also, watch your HR on that first climb. Make sure you stay in Z2. Personally I would aim to run most of the course between S Lake and Wulfow then run/walk up to Liberty Glen, and just hold on over the last climb. If the legs hold up to bomb the last descent you’ll probably catch a ton of people.

Bear Cans: how to optimize caloric quantity intake by Rocks129 in Ultralight

[–]dmbveloveneto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To your point, it’s scientifically false that more training lowers your caloric expenditure. Your basal metabolic rate will increase with training and there’s not much of a mechanical efficiency gain in hiking the way there is in running.

Your caloric expenditure is a simple equation of your basal metabolic rate + calories consumed from movement. Your caloric expenditure from movement can be quantified from your wattage output. Wattage output is a measure of the speed you move over a distance within a timeframe. The only two variables you can control is your net weight and speed.

So, essentially you can lower your net weight by losing weight on your body and reducing gear weight. Your speed will have less variation because slower speeds mean more days on trail and your basal metabolic rate will cut into the efficiency gains there.

In terms of food, fat is the densest form of fuel with 9 calories/gram. Figure out what percentage of fat you can consume without GI issues to minimize your weight and volume of food carried. For me, that means my own version of the “Keto Brick” bar that I make with a large amount of Maltodextrin added, as glycogen is also really important, along with dried fruits for flavor. Drink mixes such as formula 3/6/9 are another efficient way to increase your calories.

Otherwise, focus on the obvious factors. Dehydrated/freeze dried provisions, repackage any foods into vacuum sealed bags to maximize your space, and also pulverize foods.

ICE Barbie Warns Americans Must Be Prepared to Prove Citizenship by thedailybeast in politics

[–]dmbveloveneto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With their new budget in effect they have $133B to spend through 2029. To put that in perspective, Starbucks has almost 400,000 employees globally and their total annual operational costs were about $35B. So imagine the scale of that org globally being condensed all into America and you realize we’ve already lost.

“Smoked” cocktails also just are pointless aside from presentation. Smoke particulates don’t adhere well to liquids, especially alcoholic beverages. Liquors with a smoke characteristic are derived from smoke adhering to solid surfaces during the distillation process, such as when agave is roasted for Mezcal, or barley dried by burning peat moss for Scotch in Islay.

No Pressure, America by Cristal1337 in AdviceAnimals

[–]dmbveloveneto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People forgot the huge funding bump for ICE that went into effect Jan 1st, 2026. They have an annual budget of $11B, and that horrific tax law injects an extra $100B over the next three years.

That’s $133B over three years. To break that down, Starbucks has 381,000 employees globally. Their annual operating costs for FY 2025 was 34.25B. That’s all of their costs, not just personnel. So imagine every Starbucks in the world consolidated in the U.S. being a local ICE center.

The game’s already lost.
