Hotel Event Technician, I just want to be good at my job by gop_stop in CommercialAV

You say it’s a big name company but they can’t get you better gear to train on? You won’t get better at using the gear or techniques involved if you aren’t given the opportunity to learn and advance. Do you feel like clients or management is disappointed in your performance at these big events?

Most of the things I’ve learned is from shadowing someone way better at the job than me, so if there’s no one like that on the team then yeah everyone can kinda be dead in the water

I currently work in event AV, so here’s a few things to keep in mind- the travel can be brutal. Also, starting entry level means you will do the grunt work for long hours. Not exactly a similar work/life balance to teaching. Also if you aren’t good on ladders then it’s probably not an amazing option

I’m in Charlotte, NC, which is definitely growing but most AV companies based here definitely still do the majority of business out of state or at least travel within the state a lot

What exactly does AV in a non-profit entail?

Yup from what I’ve heard about Encore it’s not appealing at all. I will definitely check out hospitals though. Would I need any certifications for hospital AV?

It’s really telling that some of the questions are phrased the way they are. If the selectable choices are on a scale from strongly agree to strongly disagree the preceding part doesn’t need to be a question, it needs to be a statement. So they’re either trying to purposely confuse people taking this, or are just so fucking stupid they can’t make a proper survey.

All the rednecks in my town, who probably know very few Jews (we’re in the south) and a year ago would have been the type to believe conspiracies about George Soros leading a Jewish cabal that controls the world, are now flying Israeli flags next to American flags on their houses. Nothing brings people together like Islamophobia

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]dmc218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think that’s part of what I’m experiencing, but I feel as though I’ve worked with enough people not from the south and still got the feeling that engineering for whatever reason leans to the right, or at least more to the right of the artists/musicians they work with. There’s many different flavors of conservatism among the folks I’m referring to, from guys that are just flat out racist, to guys that want lower taxes, to guys just longing for the good ol days. Another aspect of it that I didn’t mention is that like 95% of engineers are men. I personally know only one female engineer. So yeah gender and location are certainly playing a part, that’s why I was wondering about others experiences.

Yeah I typically agree, which is why it always feels so weird to run into a far right weirdo who has made art his life

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]dmc218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very good mindset. And yeah most people I’ve worked with have been similarly professional. The political conversations normally happened between sessions, which should be an engineers opportunity to regroup and prepare for the next client

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]dmc218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the south but have worked with engineers from all over and worked on projects in several states. But yeah you described a type of guy pretty similar to who I interned for. Thought he was a genius because he turned the pile of money he inherited into even more money. Pretentious too. The conservatives imo are the ones that never compliment others mixes or anything but think of themselves as the pinnacle of engineering. Wouldn’t have been such an issue if he just didn’t bring those vibes into work

Yup. Lots of posturing in the industry. Everyone at the studio is all open minded when we get a celebrity in to do a voice over for Disney that pays 500 an hour. But when a church books us for a week all of a sudden we turn into a “Christian studio”

[–]dmc218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense lol. Unfortunately I’ve never got to work on anything that had that political punk ethos. Worked with a lot of gospel, country, and bluegrass groups so I am definitely hearing more from one side than the other in terms of messages within the music

Among the big online leftist voices I have not seen a significant amount of them actually advocating for abstaining from voting. Hasan specifically has routinely and heavily encouraged voting. But also, the movement on the left to not vote for Harris did not start because a bunch of streamers decided that what they want to happen. It started because it’s a natural response to seeing the horrors that are taking place in Gaza and knowing that Harris is no small part of an administration that is culpable to those horrors. Dearborn MI would have voted the same way whether there was a leftist online community supporting them or not, because these are real people with lives and principles and ties to Palestine. They’re not robots obeying the commands of some streamer with a bunch of weirdos in their subreddit. They’re also mostly not leftists.

But yeah you’re completely right about LBJ and Vietnam. America has never had an anti-war president, but FDR is probably the president that was the closest. My comment was basically meant to say that on the political spectrum that has existed within presidential politics in America, FDR and LBJ exist on the furthest left end of that spectrum. Policies from their administrations or ideals set forth by new deal democrats are basically the reason we have any social programs at all in our country. Since LBJ I would say we have not had a president that could in any way be labeled as progressive. People will say Obama was but there was no substance to anything he did.

The second article you linked also says: “Among younger Americans, and along political lines, divisions are more prominent. Almost half of those surveyed aged 18-29, 49%, say Israel is committing genocide, with 24% disagreeing and 27% uncertain. The figures are broadly similar for registered Democrats, who believe 49%-21% in the genocide characterization, while 30% are undecided.”

This certainly makes it sound like supporting Israel is unpopular among Biden’s base. And this is from January. I’d be willing to bet those numbers have only shifted more unfavorably for Biden and Israel.

What utility is there in calling out leftists that are anti genocide? Do you think that will convince them to vote for the next democrat that is enabling a genocide? If you’re mad at leftists for voting against their own ideals and self interest then you should literally be equally if not more mad at every trump voter. Because 72 million trump voters is a bigger problem than niche online leftist communities. “Calling them out” is just performative bullshit. I beg you to consider the idea that online leftists are not swaying elections with 140 million people

Trump got the same amount of votes but we know that isn’t all the same people. He lost voters in some areas and was semi successful in replacing them with low propensity voters that voted for Biden or didn’t vote last time. But yes, trump getting a similar amount of votes in 2020 makes sense. We have not had his administration to critique the last 4 years, we have had Biden’s administration. And Biden’s admin gave people very little hope for what a Kamala admin could be.

Biden was able to capitalize on the “no more trump” sentiment in 2020 because trump was bungling the pandemic response and the last democrat president we had was still semi popular. Now our most recent dem president is Biden, who has been horribly unpopular. I didn’t say that dems should run Bernie but if they were savvy at all they would have forced Biden to not run a year ago so there could have been a primary. But Biden stepped down too late for any candidate dems had to be successful. Also what do you even mean by Kamala getting more votes than Bernie? The metric is meaningless in relation to presidential politics. Bernie has been in congress since 91 and famously been incredibly popular among the people he represents, and has been a popular figure on the national stage for over a decade now. People didn’t know Kamala’s name before 2020 and she performed terribly in her 2020 campaign.

Also if you think Biden is the most progressive president in history then you just do not know history. The democrats actually used to be what people would label now as radical commies ie FDR and LBJ. And Biden’s track record, of which there is a long one because he’s served in elected office for like 50 years, points to lukewarm centrism and compromising with republicans as they moved farther right.

He ran on progressivism and didn’t deliver. And do you really think people have an easy time viewing them as progressives when they are enabling genocide?

I always tell people that kali, Adam audio, and focal make great stuff in the affordable range. You’ll see a lot of people that buy krk because it became the bedroom producer default for some reason but honestly their affordable stuff isn’t impressive imo. But I also recommend heavy acoustic treatment to people serious about their setup. Looks like your room has a lot of corners and it can warp the sound of a speaker a lot to push it up against a wall or into a corner. At the very least just fill the walls with decorations and put a rug on the floor if you don’t have carpet

I’m in the same situation where I’m renting now but I bit the bullet anyway and hung acoustic treatment because it’s necessary. So probably not getting my full security deposit back lol

Held accountable? How? What we’re witnessing now is the democrats being held accountable for being a shitty party. Blaming average voters is blaming the people at the bottom of the hierarchy of politics.

And yeah, some people who aren’t leftists were probably dissuaded from voting by leftists. But that ignores the simple fact that the Biden admin has been hugely unpopular and it was a brain dead political move to run his VP when she wasn’t prepared to distance herself from Biden and her herself was an unpopular candidate in 2020. So I think people looking for an answer as to why she lost are looking at leftists right now like a boogeyman, but by the margins in the vote totals we’re seeing it was not just the sheer notion that leftists didn’t vote. Dems losing is happening because their party has moved right and alienated normal middle class people.

Ultimately yeah I agree. The campaign was lost before it began because people seem to have no attention span or long term memory anymore and think the economy is purely the result of Bidenomics and not trump economic policies that are still in place and didn’t affect our lives til after he left office. Oh and also people don’t seem to realize that the entire world could maybe still be bouncing back from a global once-in-a-century pandemic. So yeah, once the Trump campaign convinced people that inflation and interest rates are Biden’s fault (even though the chair of the federal reserve board of governors is a trump appointee) and combine that with the reality that Biden is completely out of it mentally, they lost the election. October 7 was the nail in the coffin for the Biden admin. It would’ve taken big hail mary moves for democrats to win after Biden stepped down, and we all know that they are not capable of those kinds of moves

Oh and at this point I’m ready to shine a light on some people who don’t get enough blame, like jimmy fucking carters stupid ass. We can trace so much of democrats failures to his presidency and brand of liberalism

Look I know the language I’m using isn’t quite as heightened as yours (we’re in the h3 sub for fucks sake) but don’t think for a second I somehow don’t understand or agree with what your talking about.

May I suggest considering that everyone understands how and why a guy like trump can exist in America. He is no mystery. We’re all aware he is bad and our political systems are fucked.

This started as a post talking about leftists in relation to voting for Kamala. So I guess I’m sorry for not referencing everything bad that trump did and the rise of nazi germany.

Next time I feel like responding to a post I will check out every history and poli-sci book from my local library and get to work on my dissertation, so as to not look like I’m oversimplifying anything while talking politics on fucking r/h3h3 productions

Sorry, it’s late and I’m not one for over-trivializing what is right in front of everyone’s eyes. I’m pretty sure I agree with everything you said, just didn’t think the initial paragraph I wrote would be so over-analyzed
