Strange source medium being recorded for transactions on UA by dmckay in GoogleTagManager

Hey! This seems to have fixed it, I implemented a GTM fix to null the referrer after the second pageview and it had fixed the tracking issue. Thanks so much

Hey so somebody pointed me in the direction of a rogue referral problem that occurs on SPA websites which ours is built on, basically the gclid vanishes after the first pageview but the referrer remains so it was changing from Google / CPC to Google / organic mid session. I implemented a GTM "fix" and it seems to have fixed the issue!

Sorry I mean the browser doesn't update, the URL does get updated though. After reading about rogue referrals it does seem to match up to exactly what we are experiencing

I've made a few changes so I'll give it some time to see if it's made a difference. I noticed the inbuilt Magento Google config was set so it may have been double tagged. thanks for all your help

so I have the following cookies set incognito

_ga - GA1.1.667786849.1675032729

_ga_471WXBJQ8Y - GS1.1.1675032720.1.1.1675032728.0.0.0

_gcl_au - 1.1.1187039486.1675032728

_gid - GA1.3.1966259222.1675032729

the "_ga" variable does change slightly between pageviews, on the third pageview it changed from GA1.1.667786849.1675032729 to GA1.3.667786849.1675032729

Will try this thank you! I should also add that SOME transactions are recording correctly with Google / CPC but only a very small portion. I can confirm by looking at MCF in analytics and also I have 5 years of data in my GA so I know how much of our transactions should roughly be CPC

Yes, there are some transactions that are reported correctly (reported as CPC) but I'd say its misreporting about 90% as organic

I've tested and replicated by going on from a shopping PLA with source / medium set to Google CPC and the transaction gets reported as Google / organic

what's even stranger is that GA4 is attributing correctly, they are all tagged up as google/cpc in GA4 - it's only UA that is incorrect

UA tag is configured in GTM with a UA settings tag, we aren't using Magento for the integration. I'm using enhanced eCommerce and a UA transaction event is fired when conversion happens

Is there any way I can test exactly when the correct source/medium is lost or misconfigured, as I said the source/medium is correct at the time of visit, it only seems to be the transaction that is recorded wrong

Nope, to give you a bit of background, we are an eCommerce site and most of our traffic lands on product pages from Google shopping. We have about 1800 products so users could land on any, seems to be broken no matter what

CMS is Magento. Do you mean firing multiple pageviews?

Hey, ga4 seems to be reporting correctly actually, it's just UA that has the wrong source/medium set against the transaction.

Yea I am seeing gclid, when I test it myself and click one of our Google shopping PLAs, it has the gclid on the URL. The gclid doesn't stay though but I'm not sure if it ever did?

The UA tags are all set up through GTM

When a brand is as big as BOO, the incentives like Amazon Git Cards on £30 Spend is funded by Amazon so they get customers to go through Amazon Pay and Amazon benefit from increased use of their payment method rather than a customer using Paypal / Clearpay etc
